We had such an incredible four nights at Sausage Tree. Where to start??? You are warmly greeted on arrival and after coming back to the lodge from each game drive. You are treated like family from start to finish. Karinne and Thandy were always so kind and welcoming. Meals were incredible thanks to Pitzo and his team. You certainly won’t leave hungry! From snacks on the game drive, treats right before and hearty meals in between, the food was exceptional. And the guides and trackers are so knowledgeable and love to teach you about everything you see and make sure your drives are memorable. Huge thanks to Polite, Life and Themba. We saw the Big Five multiple times and more unique sightings than I could possibly imagine, as well as laughs. And then there are the accommodations… the tents are very private and have lots of little touches to make your stay as comfortable as possible, including water bottles in the beds at night and fresh water refilled throughout the day. Eating dinner around in the boma was such a great way to end the day and you can relax by the pool or overlooking the watering hole and have a drink to relax throughout the day. It was a magical week and one we won’t soon forget. Thank you James for such a unique property and experience.

The lodge is small and welcoming, family run. The tents are simple but very functional, the common area enjoys a beautiful view of the savannah and allows sightings of animals that come to drink in the pool of water below, the camp is surrounded and protected by an electrified fence, the food is good and friendly service. Dinner held together in front of the fire creates pleasant opportunities for guests to get to know each other. The hot water bottle and the additional blanket help overcome the cold at night, but in any case there is also an air conditioner which I think can perform heating functions if necessary. The owners told us that in their summer they spray a disinfestant for mosquitoes, which however in the dry season (our summer) seem to be completely absent.
The sightings of animals were very numerous, thanks to the fact that the explorable territory is quite vast, as well as located on the banks of a river, and thanks to the experience of the guides. The contacts with the animals are really close, but we never perceived any danger. The encounters with the family of lions and the herd of elephants are unforgettable. The vegetation itself is sparse, not beautiful in itself, but very useful for sightings.
The only flaw is the proximity to the park fence, which can ruin the atmosphere a bit and give the (false) idea of being locked up in a space that is ultimately delimited and filled with animals. In truth you are on the outer edge of the Balule reserve, connected (without barriers) to the great Kruger. It is therefore the Kruger itself that is surrounded in its immense perimeter by electrified barriers.
The lodge organizes (expensive) transfers, but in the dry season the road is easily accessible even with your own car. The excursion in the cultural field should be avoided, while the walk in the savannah is very suggestive.

Thank you so much for the most wonderful holiday we have ever had . Our first experience in the “bush” surpassed all our expectations. Our guides and tracker , Themba, Polite and Jimmy , were brilliant . Really funny and so knowledgable . We saw the big 5 and they even found Lion Cubs waiting for their pride to return . They obviously know the reserve really well , although to me all the tracks looked identical ! Every day there was new scenery and something else to learn . We got so close to the animals but never felt at risk . They understand animal body language well, so we got fantastic photo opportunities without causing distress to the wildlife.. I have to say the addition of Amarula in morning coffee or hot chocolate was quite delicious on the early morning game drives and sundowner G &T overlooking the bush at dusk was wonderful.

Now on to the camp itself ….the 5 tents are luxurious and the camp is surrounded by a fence so you are free to walk around by yourself . The outside showers are fun and you absolutely do not need to be concerned about being seen by anyone other than the birds !

You can hear the animals close by as you sleep and the deck overlooks the waterhole . As we sipped wine we watched elephants and impala walk by . The food is first class, varied and really, really tasty….the chef , Pitsu, is excellent . Thandy and Corinne looked after us well and were such great company. Eating supper in the evening with the staff was lovely and gave us the chance to get to know them a little better . The camp has a lovely family feel and you are made to feel like friends not guests. We had some great conversations with the owners James and Sonya about life in the bush , which were fascinating.

We also took the Panorama Day tour from the camp to Blyde Canyon , the third largest canyon in the world. The scenery was magnificent and well worth it .

I know we will return as soon as we can and we cannot recommend Sausage Tree safari camp highly enough.

The bush is a magical place and brings home what is really important in life. Sausage Tree is the epitome of everything a “Safari” holiday should be …..great location and facilities , fabulous camp, wonderful food and wonderful people who work there .

Thank you all for showing us to a wonderful part of South Africa xx

We had a great six days at this lodge. Living in very nice tents ( glamping). Tents have air conditioning and a fan, bathroom is very large with a bath and a private outdoor shower. The staff, guides and owners are wonderful , very friendly and can not do enough for you. 3 huge meals a day and a good range of drinks for you to purchase at very reasonable prices. I would recommend this camp for sure and we got to experience seeing a lot of animals up close but the guides are very mindful of the safety of both animals and the environment. A small camp (5 tents) so you get a very personal holiday with just a few people. A few steps to negotiate, a nice deck with a pool overlooks the African bush. About 5 days in my opinion to enjoy all the camp has to offer and see lots of the animals, birds and flora.

I have been on safaris quite a bit but The Sausage Tree offers the whole package! The tents offered all you need and the bonus is to have great views at a waterhole right at the terrace of your tent. Inside the tent you find all you need. Fresh drinking water offered every day, a comfortable spacious bed, air conditioning and an outside shower to start a proper day in the bush.
The staff was of another level! You truly experience their passion in what they do and the friendliness that comes with it. Well done to James & Sonia to make them feel at home and operate in this special manner. I think joining your guests for breakfast every day is a very personal touch, thank you James.
Also I like to thank you Neli, Karinne and all the other ladies that put in the efforts to keep the tents so nice and clean and how you continuously put in all your efforts to keep the guests happy. You girls are doing a wonderful job.
The food was outstanding and well cooked with care by a chef. From breakfast to dinner and all the in between snacks were freshly prepared and they make sure you won't be hungry. Thank you Pitzo.
The game drives were like I never have experienced before. On top of that the rangers go out of their way to make sure you get what you wish for where possible...they never give up and continue finding the most incredible sights for you.
Thank you Themba, Polite and Life for making my adventure so special.

It was an experience that I will always remember and I hopefully will be back one day!

From the moment we arrived until we, reluctantly, had to wave goodbye, the staff and owner of this delightful camp looked after us so well and with such great enthusiasm.
Balule Reserve is large so you don’t ever feel you are driving down the same route again. Our driver, Themba, and tracker, Life, were a fantastic team who knew just when and where to get some amazing sightings for us and were so entertaining. Their knowledge of everything from the smallest plant to the biggest animal added to our enjoyment. Themba took us on a walking safari one morning which included a game with giraffe droppings! That’s all I’ll say so as not to spoil the surprise for anyone going to do this!!
The food and drink in camp, morning coffee on the drive and sundowners were all perfect.
Our tent(5) had recently been upgraded and was extremely comfortable. We particularly like an outdoor shower.
We will be back and can highly recommend a visit to all readers.

Fantastic experience! This little lodge is distinguished by a sublime service and an intimate atmosphere that is felt immediately upon arrival. There is an almost familiar atmosphere, and the good service seems sincere and heartwarm. The place animates the guests to talk together, and this contributes further to the hygge.
The interior is tasteful and modern, and the food is lovely. Game run takes place with a competent and charming tracker and driver. I give this place my warmest recommendation.

We stayed at Sausage Tree for 3 nights in late November 2023. All the staff we encountered were lovely, friendly and attentive. A special shout out goes to Jimmy and Themba our guides. They were brilliant. They have excellent english and are just so much fun to be around with lots of energy. They go out of their way to make sure you have a fabulous experience and they are knowledgable about the animals and landscape. The front of house staff, Nellie and Tandy were also lovely and welcoming. This is a small camp and you really do benefit from the intimate size of the camp. We were staying during a heatwave (even the locals were finding the heat hard!) so it was quite hard to cool down - we spent a lot of the middle of the day like hippos in the pool. There is aircon in the tents (along with a bedside fan) but it found it hard to make much difference in such high heat. The outdoor shower was a blessing. The meals were very tasty - breakfast is served family style on the terrace overlooking the watering hole below (we were lucky enough to be visited by elephants and giraffes). Lunch was very tasty and then dinner was served in the boma round a fire with everyone facing into the fire. They catered well for vegetarians too. If you are looking for a 2 or 3 night stay in a safari camp not too far from Hoedspruit airport (40 mins drive) then Sausage Tree is perfect. Balule Nature Reserve is part of the greater Kruger area (open on one side for free animal movement across the whole Kruger area) and we saw lots of animals very close up, particularly good for elephants and lions. The staff at Sausage Tree really do make this place special. They were the nicest staff we encountered during our holiday in SA and I would wholeheartedly recommend the camp - it felt relaxing, welcoming and fun.

On our second visit to Sausage Tree, we were greeted like family by the owner, staff, guide and tracker. The year before, we had a lovely glamping and safari experience, so we thought we would we see the same things. Wrong! The only (delightful and delicious) consistency was the high level of service, food, and great assortment of South African gins for sundowners. This trip we learned more from our guides and trackers about animal behavior. We saw an amazing parade of wildlife starting with a pride of 12 lionesses/cubs, mother-child relationships with rhinos, hyenas, and wild dogs. Every time we climbed in to the safari jeep, we learned something new about animals and environment and saw not only a variety of wildlife and birds - but we stayed long enough to revisit prides, dens, and hunts to increase our own knowledge. The intimacy and joy at this camp safari is hard to beat.

A trip of a life time has a lot to match up to and the team of staff at sausage tree safari camp could not have done more to make sure all was the best it could be.
Warm, friendly, knowledgable, with a lot of giggles and fun. Thember, Life and Polite made sure we were given great access to wildlife large small, feathers, fur or shell.

Meals were five star and adapted to dietary needs with a smile.

Accommodation, well you really felt you were in the bush, however! With a safety net of comfort and security.

We had 4 nights with the wonderful team and the 8 drives were each a ride of a lifetime.

Good day jtsang72, Thank you for your question and for you interest in our Unique and Private Safari Camp. The Game Drives are included in the rate and are done on Balule Nature Reserve which is open and part of the Greater Kruger National Reserve. (Its just on a different area in the Kruger)

is the camp malaria free or do take tablets
Answer from Sausage_Tree
Hoedspruit, South Africa13 contributions
Don’t forget to pack your sunblock, insect repellent, flashlight, camera, binoculars and anti-malaria tablets. Although Sausage Tree is situated in a low-risk malaria area, anti-malaria prophylactics are recommended for visitors going in to the Kruger National Park. The highest risk period is between November and April which is the rainy season. A 24-hour malaria hotline is available on +27 (0)82 234 1800 to give a detailed explanation on risk and advice on precautionary measures. We advise that you consult a knowledgeable medical practitioner about recommended medication.

WiFi is available, with a charge of Rand 50 per night per tent. Also, walks are available for Rand 400 per person. We went on a walk ourselves. The walks are conducted by another organization, which supplies the guides (who come to Sausage Tree). We enjoyed the walks ourselves.
