We spent four nights and had 10 game drives. This was an exceptional experience and we feel privileged to have had this opportunity. The wildlife was extraordinary, our ranger (Morne) was amazingly knowledgeable, the atmosphere was perfect, the food was delicious, and the service was unmatched. I cannot think of a single thing that could be improved upon. We used...

From start to finish you will not be disappointed. We stayed 3 nights in villa 3. ( perfect location to main house.) Wonderful viewing of the animals off of the deck overlooking the Sand River. Food was excellent, service was great. Trevor serves a great greyhound. ( absolute and grapefruit juice. ) As for the game, this is Africa and...

I don't know what I can say that hasn't already been said. This is one of the truly great places at which I have ever stayed. Our villa (khaya) was just wonderful. Large and comfortable with plenty of luxurious amenities. More than enough room. His and hers bathrooms/dressing rooms/showers. Private pool and large deck overlooking the Sand River. Gordon was...

Just returned from our South African vacation. This is absolutely a beautiful, first rate experience to view the incredible wild life up close and personal. Mike was an excellent ranger, very knowledgeable, and made sure we were comfortable at all times. The rooms are amazing, the food delicious, a very nice atmosphere and would very much recommend them.

We cannot say enough good things about the extraordinary Rattray’s on MalaMala. Our khaya (home) had spacious sleeping and sitting areas, and a large veranda with a private outdoor shower and plunge pool, and an expansive view of the Sand River, where we watched a herd of elephants walk through the trees one afternoon right below where we were sitting....

There are no words to describe the incredible experience this haven provides. Our guide, Murray, was knowledgeable and keen and had almost as much fun as we did. Our unit was gorgeous and the food sublime. Game drives gave us the opportunity to claim the "Big Five" all within the first 36 hours. Upscale, for sure, but well worth it.

We have had the joy of staying at Rattray's on MalaMala twice. My husband is a native South African, so he enjoyed growing up going to the game parks. The rangers are the best in the business. Dean Wraith was our ranger in 2008, Matthew and Greg Baldwin were rangers in 2013. All magnificent fun, glorious game drives, and memories...

It's been more than 3 months since we were there, but the experience is as fresh as the first day we arrived. We were met at the airport for the drive to camp. When our vehicle pulled in at the camp, the Managers were standing outside waiting for us with the warmest welcome ever. I was overcome with tears for...

Just back from 4 days at Rattray's and Mala Mala. Overall experience was incredibly positive. Rattray's offers incredibly beautiful resort accomodations but, more importantly, a staff that delights in delighting you plus access to all of the Big Five animals Since there are only 8 villas in this camp ( Mala Mala Main Camp is a mile away) things are...

Rattray's on MalaMala is one of the finest lodges I have ever stayed in. Not only are the rooms beautifully decorated and appointed with fine accessories, linens and towels, the people are fabulous. The food is delicious and the private bar and dining area is a bonus. The rangers were knowledgeable and so much fun as well. Our family and...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
MalaMala Game Reserve is the Safari Industry's blueprint to the luxury photographic safari. In existence since 1927, this massive thriving tract of land produces the most exciting wildlife experience this side of the equator. MalaMala Game Reserve is the largest private Big Five game reserve in South Africa. Comprising 13 300 ha (33 000 acres), MalaMala shares a 19 km (12 mile) unfenced border with the world-renowned Kruger National Park, and lies strategically sandwiched between the National Park and the Sabi Sand Reserve. For over four decades, Michael Rattray has remained focused on his objective to preserve and protect the land over which he is custodian. Allowing nature to move to its innate rhythm, guests experience today what the forefathers of the African Safari would have experienced at the turn of the century. This philosophy has paid off, as experienced by a veritable collection of photojournalists and film-makers who have made MalaMala their destination of choice to capture footage of wildlife viewing that would rival any Hollywood production for thrilling and breathtaking animal encounters. MalaMala's Camps (MalaMala Main Camp, Sable Camp and Rattray's on MalaMala) are the embodiment of an authentic safari experience pioneered at a time when the safari was simple - unassuming camps, vast sweeping plains, the African sky and the bush in all its splendour. Wellness was the feeling after a long day in the wild. Cigars were shared without pomp and ceremony. Guests to MalaMala will still spend hours beneath an inky sky in the traditional boma exchanging stories from the wild - a sumptuous meal, good company and relaxed faces warmed by the crackling fire, accompanied by the nocturnal symphony of sound. ... more   less
