Our visit here was one of the most amazing experiences we have ever had! On our first game drive we saw all of the big five! It only got better from there. Our Ranger, Bruce Missing, took care of our every need. The wildlife were amazing and you will be like us and dream of the day you can go... More

Mala Mala Main Camp, near Kruger National Park in South Africa is an outstanding facility. The unit was a stand alone building with a thatched roof and rear deck. Inside was a large bedroom wig sitting area, bar, two bathrooms and two closets. Laundry was done for you each day. The staff was extremely friendly and couldn't do enough for... More

The lodge is comfortable rather than luxurious. Plumbing and air conditioning work well, and meals are nice without being 5 star. However it is the soft factors that make this a great place. The location is superb as there's a river running through the reserve so the density of wildlife is high, which means the chance of sighting animals is... More

We arrived on a beautiful sunny afternoon, checked in and went to the room. I opened the curtains, a huge elephant was walking past the deck to go to the water hole beside our room! It just got better from there, we met our guide, Aymar, and went on our first drive that evening. We saw almost every animal the... More

I totally agree with all the good comments by numerous visitors. Location, rooms, comfort, food and service were far more than what I expected from a camp in the wilderness. What I value most is friendly smiling staff totally committed to service. Rangers who accompanied us morning and evening on safaris were the best of all camps we visited on... More

April 2015 Stayed in Sable Camp - a bit quieter than Main Camp. It exceeded expectations - everyday different leopards! Highlights? Night drive following leopard which caught warthog and then had this stolen by a pride of lions. Part from the Big Four our ranger found many, many other creatures.. Who would know that hyena cubs could be cute? As... More

Mala Mala is the biggest private reserve surrounding Kruger. It has the best game viewing I have ever experienced, even after going to other African countries. The rangers double as trackers and are incredibly knowledgeable. The Reserve has a culture which is very respectful and in-tune with their surroundings. The rangers respect the animals and the animals are familiar with... More

Really incredible trip! Mala Mala was the first stop and was a very impressive and well run game reserve. Our stay was full of surprised, from a hippo just outside the room to lions roaring in the middle of the night, and amazing bird species! The guides are very professional, well spoken, and knowledgeable about the wildlife and it's behaviour.... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
MalaMala Game Reserve is the Safari Industry's blueprint to the luxury photographic safari. In existence since 1927, this massive thriving tract of land produces the most exciting wildlife experience this side of the equator. MalaMala Game Reserve is the largest private Big Five game reserve in South Africa. Comprising 13 300 ha (33 000 acres), MalaMala shares a 19 km (12 mile) unfenced border with the world-renowned Kruger National Park, and lies strategically sandwiched between the National Park and the Sabi Sand Reserve. For over four decades, Michael Rattray has remained focused on his objective to preserve and protect the land over which he is custodian. Allowing nature to move to its innate rhythm, guests experience today what the forefathers of the African Safari would have experienced at the turn of the century. This philosophy has paid off, as experienced by a veritable collection of photojournalists and film-makers who have made MalaMala their destination of choice to capture footage of wildlife viewing that would rival any Hollywood production for thrilling and breathtaking animal encounters. MalaMala's Camps (MalaMala Main Camp, Sable Camp and Rattray's on MalaMala) are the embodiment of an authentic safari experience pioneered at a time when the safari was simple - unassuming camps, vast sweeping plains, the African sky and the bush in all its splendour. Wellness was the feeling after a long day in the wild. Cigars were shared without pomp and ceremony. Guests to MalaMala will still spend hours beneath an inky sky in the traditional boma exchanging stories from the wild - a sumptuous meal, good company and relaxed faces warmed by the crackling fire, accompanied by the nocturnal symphony of sound. ... more   less
