I have visited many safari lodges in South Africa and this is the best so far.
First the game viewing was exceptional. I saw leopards close up so relaxed and still that I really appreciated how beautiful they were. The big 5 sightings included a...More
Oh my word I cannot begin to describe what a wonderful time we had. Lovely rooms overlooking the water hole which unfortunately because of the dry weather was dry. However, the ranger and tracker made our safari excursions an experience not to be forgotten. We...More
We stayed here for 3 nights. I agree with many reviewers about how great the experience is but it’s important to separate the Lodge and the safari in your review. The safari is the easy part, it is great, the private game reserve used by...More

What a wonderful experience. Excellent game viewing, accommodation and value in sabi sands. We loved our room which had a plunge pool and was quiet and private. Flying in to their airstrip was an added bonus.

We saw one very small snake on the deck where breakfast was set up one morning. Three birds (hornbills) had spotted it and were hoping for a snack, but one of the rangers encouraged the snake to leave the deck. All the guests stayed about 20 feet away from the snake or more. The wonderful thing about Arathusa is that the staff and guides there know the wildlife and they make sure their guests are safe. The rooms are very well-built and everything is well-maintained, and housekeeping is very thorough, so you don't have to worry about surprises in your room. When elephants visited the camp one night, the staff immediately let us know and asked us not to walk anywhere without a ranger accompanying us. You could request a room that was closer to the bar/pool area if you wanted - that's where the most people activity is so there would be lots of eyes to spot an animal if it was nearby. When you're out in the vehicles, the rangers watch the animals' behavior, and they know if an animal is uncomfortable with our presence and then move away if needed. But, the animals are really used to seeing people on vehicles and they don't see us as a threat or as prey, so they just ignore us. It's awesome, because you get to observe the animals without disturbing them, and a ranger is always there to make sure you're safe.
