We were not sure what to expect but at the end of a seemingly endless drive we found that the young man at the desk was very pleasant. There is laundry and showers (pay) available as well as a small but doable restroom. Our site was the only pull through with all benefits except cable including free wifi. What else...

I spent six days at the Mountain Valley Lodge while attending a gathering in Portal. The Cowboy Room was a very comfortable space that made me feel at home. The kitchen area, table by the window, and it's roominess made me feel like I was in a home away from home. The place was clean and well lit, the giant...

We stayed here while birding in Portal,AZ. We have stayed at the only other motel in the area, and this was less expensive and better outfitted. Will go back again without hesitation. The proprietor was very nice and helpful, too. They have wonderful plant and water feature attracting many different birds, also.

A birder's paradise-- Cardinals, thrashers, warblers, doves and sparrows living among the Cottonwoods, Italian Cypresses and the Juniper Pines on site. You will find feathered friends fluttering and chirping the whole day through!! It was a great experience and I look forward to our next visit. A Clean, spacious, 2 bedroom home accommodated my husband and two teenagers for two...

we loved this place - very reasonably priced and nicely appointed room - We try to avoid chains when we are on the road and this stay confirmed that it is the right way to travel. A great base to explore the Chiricahua Mountains.

I would never in a million years have imagined this place could possibly be as good as it was. It's in a teeny tiny town very close to Portal AZ and the Cave Creek recreational area. The Cowboy Room, in which I stayed, is huge, with a king bed, a small kitchen area (complete with microwave fridge, small table AND...

We stayed in the Casita, a very nice three room cabin that is dog-friendly. It even has a private enclosed back yard so you can let your dog out in the middle of the night if needed. There is a full kitchen, a living room and a bedroom. Everything was very clean, and the owner was friendly and helpful. There...

My wife and I parked our 29' 5th wheel in one of four RV sites all of which were small and close but pleasant and quiet. Dan, the owner, was friendly, helpful and eager to please. We had WIFI but no cell service. (Verison might have worked) We stayed two nights but were only at the park to sleep. We...

We stayed in the Cowboy Room, formerly the village barbershop, but nicely converted into a spacious, attractive, comfortable room. Had fridge, microwave and coffee maker. Sitting out on the porch gave a wonderful view of the Chricahua Mountains.Very well-priced at $68+tax. Greg, our host, was very nice, if a bit vague. Wish we'd stayed more than one night.

Always wondered what it was like on Eastern side of Chiricahua Mtns. Is fantastic! Stayed at Mtn. Valley Lodge's RV area all to ourselves. Both 30 & 50 A full hookups for good price. New owner Dan is a great guy and the place has laundry room and nice surroundings. This location is great for day trips into the Cave...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
It is a wonder-filled place for Birders, Mountain Bikers, Hikers, and our night sky awakens an awe that brings folks back next year and the year after that to gaze at the heavens. They start calling themselves Astronomers, though some prefer Star Gazers or Incurable Romantics. We have beautiful views of the Chiricahua Mountains, one of the prime destinations for literally hundreds of bird species. Portal, Arizona, famed for being base camp to Birding Afficianados from around the world, is 7 miles away. So when you stay with us, you are close to the action but far from the "Madding Crowd". The Chiricahua Mountains provide a migration corridor above the surrounding desert and rise through seven life zones. Providing a wide range of ecosystems and a variety of plant, animal and bird species, it is one of only two sites in the US where the elegant trogon nests, and it is also home to 16 varieties of hummingbirds. Nestled in the area are hummingbirds, screech owl, great horned owl, elf owl, ring-tailed cat, skunk, coati, gray fox, deer, black bear, javelina, and bighorn sheep. Come and visit. Bring all your relatives. We have cottage, motel and RV accommodations. It is a beautiful place for a family reunion. You can relax by the koi pond while the more energetic strike out to discover the beautiful land that Geronimo and Cochise loved. This country is steeped in the history of the Old West. The famed town of Tombstone is less than 100 miles away. Tucson, Arizona is only a 2 hour drive, while the Mexico border is about an hour away. Rivers, canyons, and mountains are all within easy driving distance. ... more   less
