I booked this resort, to an extent, because they advertised that use of the fitness room was complimentary. They have no fitness room. This was disappointing.
Except at the Atima restuarant, the internet was awful, at least in my room.
I am generally a low-maintenance traveler. The Talkoo Resort served its purpose. The highlight to me was the staff. I would stay there again under the same circumstances.
The superior rooms are way better than the regular ones. The regular ones are on the other side of the road... so you have to cross the road to get to the restaurant, pool and beach. Pool is pretty small but ok. The fossets leaked water in 2 rooms.
You have to know that Khanom mostly receives Thai tourists. It's almost deserted in the week but is fully booked on the weekends. Thai tourists are pretty loud and they do some weird things with an "american breakfast", for example they put some nasty vinaigrette sauce all over your omellette. There are 2 big building sites near Talkoo, so there is some noise.
The staff is pretty bad at English and everything takes a really long time. If you go to Khanom arrange your own transport because there is zero public transport and Talkoo charges 50 baht per person for a 3km ride to the minibus station which is utterly ridicoulous. The food is very expensive and you have to walk pretty far to find some.
**Avoid this hotel as long as they are teasing pink dolphins with those jetskies!***
This beach is one of the most rare places in the world where you can see pink dolphins while you are swimming in the sea or just watch them from the beach.
Now they are scrared of their lives because of these new jetskies they have bought lately.
I have stayed in this hotel few times and everytime there has been some problems.
Staff is lazy and can't speak english enough well to take care of foreigner customers.
Restaurant...don't go there. It will be waste of time... and money if you are ready wait to enough long to get bill.
Once I made booking for 3 days and in the second day I let them know I will stay 5 more nights as my other apartment was not ready yet. They said "Is ok".
In the 4th morning 12am they call me and all that lady could say was "You check out now".
I go to the reseption and ask why I have to check out and then they said "we are full".
I saw the reservation book when I booked those 5 more days and then room was free for those days.
So what happened they over book my booking for local people.
Later I have heard same kind of stories from other travellers who stayed in this hotel.
I have travel 8years in Europe and Asia and never seen anything like this.
Warmball rock restaurant is located very near from landside bungalows so if you have planned to sleep early take bungalow only from beach side. Warmball is open everyday until 2am.
At the moment I would not recommend this hotel for anyone.
We stayed on the beach side - the cabins are not waterfront, but they are very close to the beach. The beach is beautiful, and very long, you can walk for miles! It was almost deserted most fo the time too, great if you want some peace and quiet. The beach was pretty clean, and the sand is fine and nice to walk on.
The restaurant seemed pretty good, the staff were very nice. It was not very vegan or vegetarian friendly though, almost every dish is made with some kind of seafood or meat. The staff did try to accomodate vegan requests, but I was mostly limited to pad see ew or fried rice for each meal, and there were no veggie breakfast dishes available. They were happy to allow me to bring my own food to eat though, and would provide me with hot water for noodles, or things like that.
The pool was clean and cute, and we actually used it a lot more than we thought we would - there was some sort of weird jellyfish convention in the ocean while we were there, so we mostly avoided going in.
The walkways around the cabins were in rather bad repair - bricks were missing in a lot of places, leaving holes. This made it rather treacherous to walk around at night, and I wouldn't advise it if you were drinking! There were also a lot of red ant colonies, so you'll want to wear shoes when you are walking around, they really hurt when they bite!
All in all, we liked this resort. It is not touristy at all - you won't find people on the beach selling things, or offering massages, or anything like that. There is a bar next to the resort, but it was not noisy, and when we stopped in for a drink there were only about 4 people there, and I think at least one was staff.
Location;
Khanom is a local town and so it is NOT geared for tourists. Talkoo resort is about 3 clicks away from town but the hotel will collect you from Khanom if you phone. The resort is right on the beach...like right on it! The beach is generally clean...Talkoo raked the area in front after some rough seas every day. If you want a beach bum break then come here. If you want action then go elsewhere. We loved the location as we needed peace and quiet.
Arrival;
Painless check inn and quite friendly with smiles. First impressions are very good with neat, generally well maintained grounds, driveways and buildings.These can be dreadful in Thailand. The resort is on both sides of the main road so go beach side..
Room;
Actually a tasty bungalow that had charm and was spacious. Neat bathroom that had an unusual wooden basin and decent enough shower even if it was low on power. Air con helped the sleep and comfort.
Breakfast;
Not great and basic...just the usual American and not the best. As is usual in Thailand everything is counted out so if you need more toast/butter they will charge. Silly and unnecessary.
Amenities;
Small clean pool with an equally small surround for a few loungers. The view is ace as it looks out to sea.
The grounds are tropical (surprise!) and are very well kept.
Expensive restaurant and drinks.
Be careful! The paths have some bricks missing/loose and they can cause you a problem.
Overall;
We really enjoyed every minute of our stay and would for sure go back. The value was exceptional and hard to beat. I have travelled all of Thailand and can say that this is real Thailand and worth the trip...but remember no action, no bars, no discos, no etc!
We stayed in the cabins beach side, on the outside the cabins look like something out of the Flintstones but inside they were quite nice with a lot of unusual woodwork. We paid 1500baht a night for this room with free breakfast and wifi, the rooms closer to the pool and beach were`1700baht but they were all occupied.
So our first night there turned out to be very strange. After we eventually fell asleep due to the noise coming from karaoke singers, I woke up around 2am to terrible noises coming from the woodwork around our window. Gary had a look and our room was being happily eaten by thousands of termites!
So early next morning we asked to change rooms, the only room available was the one right next to the pool which was an extra 200baht, no problems we will take it. Another mistake! The quickest way to the pool was past our cabin and it was the weekend. Bus Loads of Thai families started arriving, it seemed like hundreds of children running and screaming around our cabin. Not to worry we can cope and at least we could not hear any termites feasting on our room.
Oh no did I mention busloads, well they were all here for a huge Karaoke night at the hotel and to make it worse Sandy’s Beach Bar which is next door were also trying to compete to see who could make the most noise. That’s it; we are out of here tomorrow and will find somewhere else to stay!
The hotel is typical Thai style, no English speaking television, but we bought a DVD player and movies with us, the only drinks in the restaurant are bottles of whisky or beer, but it is no problem to take your own. When we went to breakfast we were told sorry no buffet today, you want coffee or tea. We thought that was all we were going to get but out comes my pint of tea ha-ha, toast, egg,s delicious leg ham etc, so it was a good breakfast.
We also had a nice dinner in the restaurant which was 770baht with our meals, 3 large bottles of Leo and one small bottle.
Having said all that the location is lovely, the staff were very friendly, the food was good but for us it was not the place for a relaxing beach holiday.
Location
Khanom is beautiful, the beach that Talkoo is on is unspolit, there are resorts along the coast though they are not obvious. There is a store where you can buy supples that is in walking distance though that is about all, without transport you will not be able to go far (maybe not a bad thing). You can walk to some other hotels along the beach to eat. We only tried CC's based on reviews, we were greeted by CC and he was lovely and very helpful. We had very reasonably priced beers and food on the beach in a lovely laid back environment.
Kahnom and surounding areas are local, not overly touristy, don't expect lots of shoping or 5 star resorts. You will need to use some creative communication with the locals, which I recomend, it is lovely.
We did not see the pink dolphins though it was suggested that you take a boat ride to do so.
Car Hire
We hired a car from Avis from Suret Thani airport and dropped it off at Donsak Pier, we had to pay a little to do this (reasonable) and were not sure how it would all pan out though 3 Avis boys in their red jackets were there to meet us at the pier and the transition was easy. I would definately recomend a car in this area, we went to beautiful deserted beaches and fishing villages. It was easy to drive around and find our way, you can get a nav man for 100 baht/day. The car itself was fine though don't expect Australian Avis standards.
Hotel
The hotel is split over 2 sides of the road, one beach side where the pool and restaurant also are. I believe it's cheaper away from the beach though would recomend staying by the beach. We were in a room right by the restaurant where we could see the beach. We were happy with this as the resort and restaurent were not busy. However both nights (one night in our resort and one next door) there was karaoke and it was REALLY LOUD and really bad, going to about 1am. It caused for a bad sleep and whilst I don't want to spoil people's fun it was totally out of character for the beautiful quiet area, did I mention how loud it was?!
Service at the hotel was fine and they were very helpful in calling the car hire people for us. Based on reviews we didn't use the restaurant other than breakfast and one lazy lunch. The breakfast buffet was not real good though the next day we were served from the menu which was great. I did have the hotest seafood salad that I have ever had here one day.
The pool was empty when we were there, no notice or apology.
Room
The room provided everything we needed and was really quant. Bed was large though hard which is standard in Thailand. Room was clean and sorted daily and the air con was great. We enjoyed sitting on the balcony in the afternoon, there is a bench seat to sit on though only one chair, 2 would have been perfect.
