Villa Markisa, an exclusive resort located on the northeast coast of Bali. Nestled at the foot of Bali’s most famous volcano “Gunung Agung", the private bungalows offer individual service and great attention to detail. Dive Bali’s most famous site, Tulamben’s USS Liberty shipwreck just minutes away with a high-speed tender boat. For scuba divers who prefer critters, “Seraya Secrets” is directly in front of the resort's beach and numerous other excellent dive sites are minutes away! We do our best to ensure the safety of our guests and employees. In addition to measures such as more frequent cleaning and disinfection of rooms and public areas, we also provide some precautions for our cars, restaurant, bar and the dive center. As our resort is very spacious it is easy to maintain social distances. A major advantage of Villa Markisa is that our guests are always outside, except when in their own rooms. We are looking forward to welcoming our guests again. Certainly they can spend a wonderful and relaxing holiday in Villa Markisa and remain safe.

Christiana (the owner) saved us. We were at a local dive shop and had such bad service checking in, we were not comfortable diving there. We had very personalized diving service and saw some great critters while diving. And she knows her nudibranches. Even has one named after her. We did lunch there as well and it was always excellent. I didn't expect to have lasagna as good as my mother's as well as great Indonesian food. The villas are gorgeous with Asmat decorations. I wish we had slept there as well.

Our party arrived at DPS at about 3:30 PM from Alor. After collecting our luggage, we headed to the the Tulamben area arriving about 7:30 PM. The drive was a bit tiring after having travelled from Alor that same day. At Villa Markisa, we received a warm welcome from the resort staff. After a quick dinner, we retired for the night. The next day, after a made-to-order breakfast, we began diving at about 8 AM. The usual dive schedule is for a morning 2-tank trip then a 1-tank afternoon dive. We did one 3-tank trip to Batu Ringgit slope. There is no dock so coming and going to/from the dive boat requires wading thru the tidal zone; during high tides, swimming was more like it. One’s dive mask came in handy. The boat crew was always available to lend a helping hand. The dive guides are all quite experienced and skilled at finding critters — large, small and very small. We had 3 dive guides for 4 divers — a very nice arrangement. My dive guide was very enthusiastic about finding the critters I was most interested in shooting. I used a snoot on some shots and he was quite helpful in aiming the snoot laser to best capture the subject. The black sands at Villa Markisa are known for their macro photo subjects. We encountered several different species of nudibranch, shrimp, crab, octopus, reef fish, eels and others. I did a couple of night dives and a blackwater dive, which were excellent. On a typical dive day, we would generally get suited up before boarding the boat; the dive crew would load tanks, gear and cameras. We entered the water with a back roll. Upon completion of the dive, we took our gear off in the water and the crew loaded it into the boat. After returning to the resort, we took care of our wetsuits and the crew took care of the rest of the gear. The rooms at the resort are very spacious with lots of electrical outlets and closet space. There is also a small desk for working on photos. The bathroom facilities are outside in a walled courtyard. The rooms a just a short walk from the dive center and the dining area. There is also a large infinity pool; the grounds are impeccably landscaped. To enter the dining area, one crosses a small pond full of koi and a very curious turtle. We enjoyed a variety of food that was nicely prepared and very tasty. Breakfast was made=to=order while lunch and dinner were ordered from a menu that offered both Indonesia and Western food. The ice cream was truly exceptional. At several meals, we were joined by the owners. At sunset, we enjoyed a libation before dinner at the small bar located right off the water. In conclusion, other than the long ride from DPS airport to the resort, our time at Villa Markisa was very enjoyable with a warm, friendly, helpful staff; very comfortable accommodations; great food; excellent diving; and a very experienced and skilled dive team.

Thank you very much for your rating, we are very pleased that you were satisfied. Our dive center is really, like you said, ready to help everyone to make diving with us a lot of fun. This also means that staff takes care of your equipment so that you can only do the most important things. In our restaurant, we actually prepare the majority at home, our bread, rolls, cakes, ice cream, as well as canapes , also snacks that we serve at the bar - everything is the work of our kitchen staff. We are very happy to see you here and maybe ..... see you next time.

We spent a wonderful week at Villa Markisa. We were picked by the driver at the airport at 11pm and after a 2 1/2 hour ride we arrived at the resort. Our room was large and very comfortable, and the grounds of the property are stunning and incredibly well maintained. The pool is beautiful, and with a maximum of 16 guest the resort never feels crowded. The food is very nice and is a mix of western and Indonesian dishes. The diving is amazing. I love muck diving and this is one of the best place for that kind of diving. There's one dive guide to every 2 divers, so the diving is very flexible, we did 3 or 4 dives every day, including several night dives. Our dive guide, Sumerta, was excellent at find all kind of incredible critters. most dive sites are within 5 min by boat, and there is the house reef, Seraya Secrets, for shore dives. I cannot more highly recommend this resort for diving in Bali or if you're looking for muck diving.

Husband and I just came back from a 6 night/7 day stay here, and we loved it. We are both avid scuba divers and have been taking dive vacations twice a year for the last 20 years. This is our second time diving in the Tulamben area, first time at this resort. The property is not very large, there are only maybe 8 rooms with a staff of 30+ so the staff to guest ratio is almost 2:1, and it shows. The property is clean and beautifully maintained for maximum serenity and relaxation. Plantings create pockets of privacy. The pool was gorgeous, and never crowded. We loved our spacious, tastefully decorated room (#4, attached to the main villa) -- a/c worked well and the bathroom was huge with a separate entry outside (perfect for entering with your wetsuit/swimsuit and not getting the entire bedroom wet). There's a TV that seemed to have the streaming services like Amazon and Netflix, though we only turned it on once to see how it worked and never actually used it. There were many thoughtful touches in the room -- numerous outlets, a plastic mat specifically to rest your camera on, a large water cooler that was kept full so staying hydrated was never an issue, sarongs and portable water bottles for use around the resort. Bed had mosquito netting that would be unfolded with turndown service nightly while we were at dinner. Rooms were well-cleaned while we were at breakfast/diving in the morning, and all room maintenance was done so quickly and stealthily we almost never saw the cleaning staff. All meals were included in our stay -- the dining area is a charming open-air long table that you share with the other guests. There arent other dining options unless you take a car ride out of the resort. We never left the resort bc all the meals were perfectly satisfying for us. It's not fancy gourmet dining, but there are enough Indonesian and western options to not get bored during a week's stay and all of the food is cooked to order (except for dinner which is buffet-style) -- and most importantly all of it is very fresh! Jams and breads made in-house, fresh-squeezed juices, fresh fruit and vegetables, and meats/fish cooked very well. It was fun to converse with the other guests during meals as well, since it's a small resort you get to know each other pretty quickly. There were lovely people from Austria and Switzerland during our stay and lucky for us they all spoke very good English :) And now the diving. We love muck diving for all of the interesting small creatures you can see (nudibranchs, shrimps, etc), and the sites around here definitely deliver. The best part of this resort is that each room is basically assigned their own dive guide in the price, and that guide accompanied us for every single dive throughout our stay. We had Sumerta for our week there and he was amazing at finding so many creatures we'd never seen before. Sometimes I thought he was like a magician: I'd watch him stare at a small cluster of coral in the sand and he'd point - and suddenly there would appear a juvenile frogfish! or a nudibranch! or an octopus! Dives are done by boat or off the shore as per your request (the entry for both requires walking through a very large-pebbled beach so padded booties are a must). The dive crew does all the heavy lifting of gear/tanks/cameras to and from the boat. Also, if you like night dives they are a must-do here -- we did one every night during our stay, thanks to the flexibility of having our own dive guide! All in all the entire staff worked extremely hard and went out of their way to make everything about our stay as comfortable and accommodating as possible. The owner Christiane and her partner Pablo live on site and were friendly, helped with any questions, and kept the conversations flowing at mealtimes. They have done a great job making this resort really comfortable and relaxing with all the conveniences a diver could want -- if we could have stayed longer we would have! Highly recommend this resort and will definitely be returning the next time we dive in Bali!

We stayed for 4 days there and were most happy about the place. The resort is run really well, service is excellent, meals are delicious, ... and everything works. It is a beautiful and pleasant place (including the bathrooms) and the diving is simply superb. The dive shop is exceedingly well run. The dive guides are knowledgeable and enthusiastic and find fantastic critters on the reef which we wouldn't see otherwise. Hope to go back there one day.

We had a fabulous experience. Picked up at the airport ( unfortunately a 2 1/2 hour drive) which we didn’t expect. They were very accommodating as we asked for a bottle of wine to be put in the room for us upon arrival. Next morning met the owner Christiane and manager Peter who gave us an overview of the property, dinner, etc. Introduced us to Wanta who was “assigned” to us as our dive master. 1 dive master to every 2 people! Outstanding! Wanta was excellent! Since our first time to Bali he made sure we saw everything we could! Sea life, corals, fish, just beautiful! Our suite was large with a great deck overlooking the pool, gardens and the ocean. Only disappointment was the bathroom which was open air, so no air conditioning. Very strange and bug-gy. Needless to say warm! Very small resort with just 9 villas, so only one dining area. Food for breakfast and lunch was exceptional! Dinner was always a buffet and just wasn’t the quality of breakfast and lunch. Every afternoon at 4p they had happy hour at their little bar overlooking the ocean. Tera and Desak were two servers/ bartenders that were great! Very speedy internet! Wanta after our last dive offered to rinse and clean all of our dive gear. First time ever that I didn’t feel the need to come home and clean it again! Just awesome! On our departure several staff members came to say goodbye including Christiane! And then driven to the airport. A great experience!

Villa Markisa is perfectly located in a quiet seaside area, set in lush tropical gardens, away from the hustle and bustle of the more commercial parts of Bali. A stay here will rejuvenate and nurture your soul, each day filled with wonderful delights, from diving to spa treatments, a swim in the crystal clear pool or a tour to a nearby cultural attraction, a varied menu of consistently delicious meals prepared with love, and great company to share the experience, whether it's old friends or new. It is clear from the attention to detail that the owners and their team strive for excellence and their efforts do not go unnoticed. The staff are so friendly and kind, greeting you by name. The menu choices for breakfast and lunch are a-la-carte, with plenty of choices from around the world and dinner is a buffet. The food was quite simply amazing: expertly cooked and beautifully presented, some of the breads, jams and ice creams are home-made - a nice touch. The rooms are beautifully appointed, with welcome fruit and your own stainless steel drinking water bottle given as a gift. The bathroom shower gel, shampoo and body butter made in Bali and smell so good, it's worth buying some to take home with you. Thank you Villa Markisa - I will be back!

My husband and I spent 6 days at the Villa Markisa Boutique Dive Resort in Tulamben Bali in August 2023. It was our first stay at this resort and we couldn’t have been happier. The grounds of the property were gorgeous, with beautiful bougainvillea and bird of paradise bordering most cabanas, beautiful accommodations with Balinese décor, outdoor showers, varied cuisine choices at every meal, and fabulous muck diving. I can’t say enough about our dive guide, Budi who has x-ray vision! Special thanks to all Villa Markisa staff for their impeccable service. Thank you to all who created an unbelievable experience we’ll always remember!

We stayed at Villa Markisa in Tulamben in March 2023 after three weeks diving in Raja Ampat and one week diving in Amed, which is just down the road from Tulamben. There was some minor overlap in dive sites between Amed and Tulamben, primarily the Liberty Wreck, but both areas have many close by dive sites. We had pre-booked our five day stay at Villa Markisa, including three days of diving (two tanks per day) through our travel agents, Anne and Scott with Blue Water Dive Travel (who did a great job). Villa Markisa is located in very quiet area. There are very few restaurants within walking distance so we were glad that we had booked the full board package. The food was excellent. We met people who were staying a lot longer than us and no one seemed to be tired of eating at Villa Markisa. The open air dining area is quite elegant. Villa Markisa is a small operation. We got the impression that at least one of the owners is on site most, if not all, of the time. It shows. All aspects of the resort run like clock work including food service, housekeeping, grounds maintenance and the top notch dive operation. We stayed in Room #4. It was luxurious with a comfortable king size bed, a giant bathroom and a nice front porch with a big daybed overlooking the pool and ocean. The internet worked fine for the most part. The on-site dive operation caters to very serious divers and even more serious photographers. While almost all of the other dive operations in Tulamben and Amed offer primarily shore diving, Villa Markisa specializes in boat dives. Villa Markisa has two modern, high speed dive boats. Most the dives are immediately offshore and are typically only a few kilometers from the resort. We find boat dives more comfortable than shore diving so were were happy to see the dive boats after spending a week in Amed doing shore dives (although we are not complaining, the shore diving in Amed was also great). Villa Markisa also specializes in muck diving and blackwater diving. Some of the more serious photographers did mostly muck diving and blackwater diving, both of which are apparently particularly good in the Tulamben area. We usually just did reef dives when the others were doing muck or blackwater diving. Although, the muck diving we did was very interesting. One of the Villa Markisa owners is apparently the lead sponsor of the Mero Foundation which operates a marine biology training center just down the beach from the resort. The center appears to specialize in training young Indonesian women to become PhD level marine scientists. Ask if a tour is possible. We really enjoyed meeting the young scientists. In summary, Villa Markisa is a great option for those looking for world class diving and a high end, all inclusive resort that is easy to reach via the international airport in Denpasar.
