São Lourenço do Barrocal is a hotel and monte alentejano, located in a wild corner of the Alentejo, Portugal, in the foothills of medieval Monsaraz and nearby the Alqueva lake. Within a 780-hectare estate that has been in the same family for over 200 years, it has its heart at an ancient small farming village, which has been brought back to the rhythms of rural daily life as a remarkable hotel of understated luxury, set amidst ancient oaks, olive groves, and vineyards. It comprises a winery for the creation of its first-class single-estate wines, two farm to table restaurants respecting the flavour and simplicity of the food of Alentejo (one of them open from late Spring/ mid Autumn), a farm shop selling Portuguese contemporary crafts, regional delicacies, and the estate’s own produce and a spa by Susanne Kaufmann, the renowned Austrian brand of organic treats. It also features two outdoor pools (adults and children), an organic vegetable garden and orchard, stables with a horse riding ring and a set of indoor and outdoor activities.

We had a wonderful stay at Sao Lourenco do Barrocal. Our three bedroom cottage (previously a barn) was spacious and quiet, with well equipped kitchen, dining and sitting room, and three lovely bedrooms with large ensuite bathrooms. High ceilings, and simple but elegant decoration. Hotel set in huge property with gorgeous gardens, vineyards and orchards, and hundreds of acres of olive trees, oak trees, and ancient stone boulders. Lovely walks, hikes, bike rides, nice small gym and pools (not open in winter). Fabulous organic food and wine in restaurant, with great breakfast of local produce, with plenty of choice. Excellent wine-tasting. Hotel also offers hampers of vegetables and fruit from their gardens, and local meats, which we bought to cook a few evenings. There is also a farm shop selling the hotel's own wine, beer, olive oil, honey and other produce. Service from concierge team and restaurant staff was extraordinary - incredibly efficient, helpful and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble, and every request handled promptly, with a smile. Nice little touches every day, like dropping off a basket of produce from garden, or freshly baked cookies and sweets from restaurant. Great location - a couple of hours from Lisbon, and a few minutes drive from Monsaraz, ancient walled hill-top village, with castle and bullring, and spectacular views of the reservoir (largest man-made lake in Europe). A perfect week's vacation with family in a unique hotel, full of history, charm and understated luxury.

An incredibly serene place to spend a weekend! The rooms are spacious and minimalistic with areas outdoors to enjoy. My boyfriend and I enjoyed the cozy atmosphere with the fires and Christmas decorations. Highly recommend taking their bikes out to explore their 780 hectares of land, doing their wine tasting, and driving to see Monsaraz. Worth the trip from Lisbon for a countryside experience of Portugal.

This made a great stop driving from the Duoro to the Algarve. Nice country setting, simple, nicely decorated rooms. The view from our back sitting area (which was way too simple--could definitely be spruced up) of Monsaraz was wonderful. Dinner was ok, way too many kids, so was bright and noisy. I thought the rate was overpriced for what you get, but there aren't many options in that area.

Whoever had the idea of converting this old mega-ranch into a Leading Hotel of the World must be a true visionary. This place is like a throw-back into the earlier farm life of the Alentejo, but with a touch we've come to expect from 5-star establishments. Don't get me wrong: this is not an over-the-top luxury boutique. It is simply a well run, well appointed lodge in a bucolic, natural setting. Another plus is that it is literally only a stone's throw away by car from one of the most stunning medieval citadels in Portugal, the hilltop town of Monseraz. Let the rest surprise you. Satisfaction (almost) guaranteed.

The staff was very caring. They helped us stay dry during a rainstorm during check-in. We were impressed with the large rooms and firm beds. The breakfast was better than the dinner, but very good overall. We took an olive oil tour and a wine tasting tour, both well worth the time and money... the guides were local and spot-on. We felt like we were in the middle of authentic Portugal, away from the crowds of Lisbon.

Dear wstych, Your feedback is of great importance to us and for that thank you for taking the time to write it. We always try to give the most out of us in order for you to feel comfortable and at home. I am so glad you had the chance to do these two activities which explains some of our estate productions - wine and olive oil. Next time, you should try the archaeologic visit - it is amazing! We are looking forward for your return. With our warmest regards, Ricardo Simões Guest Relations
