We stayed here overnight in their two bedroom apartment. The apartment offered good basic accomodation, with a beautiful view over the surrounding countryside. On site there are also a number of old red rattlers converted to accommodation. There is a swimming pool and a dining car, sadly this was closed due to the current Covid pandemic. Carriageways provides a good stopping point when travelling north from the Hunter region, it’s unique accommodation is bound to appeal to rail enthusiasts.
My mother-in-law had been suggesting we stay here for about 2 years, and we finally got the opportunity to travel to Dungog and enjoy a stay at Carriageway. Unfortunately that visit also coincided with a severe heatwave with 42 and 46 degree consecutive days. But... the converted coaches had beautiful, quick and effective air-conditioning to take relief. The idea of converted carriages into cabins is novel and unexpectedly logical when you see the inside. Its a wonder that disused carriages are not converted more often. The beds were exceptionally comfortable and the kitchenette had all the features necessary to cook onsite. With a location 6km outside of Dungog, the sheer peace at night as you sleep and hear the sounds of nature is wonderful. We also enjoyed a moonlit swim and the pool was well maintained and wonderfully cool after the hot days. Our stay was very nice and we will definitely bookmark the venue for when we're next in Dungog.…
I looked at this property a few years ago and finally got the chance to stay there for a weekend in October 2018. What an amazing experience. The property has 4 restored red rattlers (trains) plus other forms of accommodation. We had the Flyer and it was brilliant. Main bedroom, 4 bunks, basic kitchen with microwave and fridge, full size bathroom, lounge dining area. Very spacious and clean and tidy. The grounds are beautiful and for summer there is a sparkling inground pool. Each carriage has a screened outdoor area as well as a picnic table and wood bbq outside. We stoked up the bbq and had a great dinner and enjoyed the crackling fire under the stars. Matt the manager is also available to pick you up and take you to the Settlers Arms Hotel for dinner. The Carriageway is such a great place to kick back and enjoy the country atmosphere whilst experiencing the thrill of staying in an old train. A must for your bucket list.…
This was my 2nd stay at Carriageways & I was a bit apprehensive as it has new owners. The only disappointment this time was that the Rattlers Dining Car restaurant is not open at the moment. We went up with my husband & 2 friends & stayed in carriage 3601. It was so clean & comfy & warm once the airconditioning was switched on. A very big thank you to Matthew , our host who picked us up & took us into the Settlers Arms for dinner & the drove us back. We will definitely be back . Thank you
I should have known when I tried to book our stay at Carriageway and I had to send two emails and phone in order to get a reply. We were offered a 33% discount as the restaurant and pool were undergoing refurbishment. We arrived at 5:40pm to an abandoned establishment. There was a sign to use the complementary phone service outside of reception to contact management if the establishment was unattended. This phone didn't work. I rang on my mobile and Stevie, the manager arrived from Dungog 10 minutes later. She couldn't find the key to our train carriage and kept saying the 'cleaner' has misplaced it. After an hour of searching for the right key, she had someone arrive with bolt cutters to get us into our room. By this stage it was almost 7pm and we popped our bags inside and took the kids straight to dinner. We returned and it was then that we realised that our room had not been cleaned. There was a dead cockroach on one of the kid's beds. There was mould in the ice cube tray, a dead frog in the bathroom, mould on the curtains, mould on the hair dryer cord and dead insects throughout the carriage. The sheets felt clean though which was a bonus and the heat and water pressure in the shower was good. We never saw anyone at the establishment for the time we were there. It was basically abandoned. There was no lock on the inside of the train carriage. We could lock it from the outside if we left but could not lock ourselves in of a night time and so security was an issue. We spent Saturday out for as long as we could and left at 7.30am on Sunday morning. There was no information for check out but we managed to find a key drop box and left the key there. I emailed Stevie when I returned home on Sunday and almost two weeks later have had no reply. It looks like they are putting effort into getting this establishment up and running again, however, failing miserably on cleanliness and overall management. I suggest less focus on the gardens and 'sustainability' and more on cleaning and maintaining the actual accommodation! Do yourself a favour and overlook Carriageway.…
