I just wanted to pass along the happy news that I was recently in Winona, MN, and the Sterling Motel was being torn down while I was there. Woohoo! The only drawback is that the sketchy clientele of the Sterling must now have moved on to another location...and just when you thought it was safe to go back into the...

When traveling I prefer to frequent smaller, mom and pop type motels rather than large chain hotels. In many years of traveling this philosophy has always served me well. And then I stayed at the Sterling Motel in Winona, MN. This was a complete disaster from start to finish. I planned to stay for 3 nights and ended up staying...

My husband and I stayed here with his work and the moment we walked into our room it smelled so strongly of cat urine trying to be covered up with bleach...or maybe too much cheap bleach? The "cleaning" person entered our room the next day without knocking or letting us know it was housekeeping. I complained about it and nobody...

I sometimes find myself in situations where I cannot be bothered driving round looking for fancy establishments and will happily take whatever I come across. This was the case here and I won’t say I made a mistake and regretted it. This classic old motel straight out of the 60s [or earlier?] is a dying breed and I was glad...

Designed by Kane and Graves Architects, the Sterling Motel was the most modern of it's kind in 1953. The motel has been very well preserved and it's design integrity maintained. The owners and staff are friendly and helpful, and the room I had for five days was clean, quiet and comfortable. If you are a fan of American Prairie Modern...

If you abolutely need a room pick a non smoking one. At least those do not smell. The beds are uncomfortable, the bathroom does not have a door but does feature an industrial toilet and a bench as though you are in prison. We had randomly placed old recliners in our room. One was shoved up tight to the bed....

I took my kids on a trip to hell. Our 1 night at sterling motel was not a good one. We got a double room and it stunk so bad that we needed a diffrent room. The second room was not much better, There was no bathroom door. The beds when you layed on them made noise like someone was...

I enjoy the idea of old motels like this one, but it doesn't make up for the quality of the rooms being so mediocre. Check in is retro-cool and friendly. They usually have rooms available and offer long-term rates as well. My room was a good deal, but I think it was cheaply cleaned. The shampoo dispenser was empty, the...

Our group of 3 couples on motorcycles stayed here 1 night on June 8 and from the moment of our arrival we knew we had made a huge mistake. The place is old and the rooms were filthy but that is just the tip of the iceburg. We arrived late afternoon and noticed right away there were lots of young...
