Recently spent a few days at Crabbes Creek Cottages. Crabbes Creek is about a twenty-minute drive from Byron Bay, but you feel like you're well and truly out in the country. Six self-contained, one-bedroom cottages are sprinkled around the 15 acre property. There's sufficient space around each cottage so you have a strong sense of privacy.

This is a wonderful location if you're looking to do some serious meditation, writing, painting or just chillin' out. The cottages are comfortable for two people, but can handle up to four courtesy of the fold out lounge.

Pets are welcome. Each cottage has an enclosed patio that is big enough for your pooch. Does pooch like to have a bit of a bark? Then look for a Plan B: a barking dog would disturb the peace and quiet like a chain saw.

Pros: (a) Our cottage was well laid out and had a small kitchen suitable for cooking simple meals. The bed was very comfortable. I slept like a baby. (b) Own a telescope? Pack it. Your reward is an unbelievably rich and beautiful night sky (no city lights). (c) Glennis is an excellent host--she can help you plan your itinerary or just point you in the right direction. (d) It's so peaceful and quiet that you can almost touch it. (e) A large number of the major towns and villages on the NSW far-north coast are easy drives from Crabbes Creek.

Cons: (well, not really) mobile phone reception is, at best, flaky. My telco is Vodafone and I had to drive several kilometers to pick up a signal. My partner's telco is Optus and he was able to pick up a signal by walking a short distance. Wifi is available, but you'll need to be near the owner's house to use it. But did you come for the peace and quiet or to spend time texting and surfing the net?

What a beautiful setting! All the cottages are well-placed away from each other and nicely screened by garden plantings. Our cottage (Grevillea) was well-fitted out for our four night stay and we couldn't have had a more peaceful time. The local bird life kept us entertained - it's a long time since we've seen blue wrens and red-browed firetail finches at such close quarters. The local General Store (worth a visit) is a minute or two down the road with all kinds of provisions - food, papers, liquor, fuel etc....
We'll definitely make a return visit.

The birds are delightful here. 52 species have been identified! Next visit keep a sharp eye out for the small, very fast Azure Kingfishers over the first dam. Thank you for your review - I'm glad you could relax in this special valley.

Get away with your dogs to the tranquillity of no mobile phone reception or Wi-Fi, feel the serenity of being cut off from the rat race. This peaceful hollow is not glamorous, or full of the mod-cons which we have filled our own homes with, but it is exactly what the doctor orders when you need to just take it slow. Set amongst the trees and cows and creeks and grasses, it is a very picture-perfect setting. The cabins are clean and private and comfortable, and very suitable for keeping our dogs safe. The location is central to many of the great beaches, restaurants and well known attractions of northern NSW. We love our getaways to Crabbe Creek, the only problem is that they do not happen often enough.

The owner, who offers a wealth of local knowledge, is courteous, honest & friendly. Lights & heaters are on for our return, the location is quiet & the cottages are clean, comfortable, well maintained & very private. We experienced true hospitality in a beautiful rural setting. It's a great place to chill out, catch up with friends, enjoy the beaches, watch the whales in winter, go for walks, set up cricket or volleyball - just relax and have fun.

I truly appreciate your comments and your appreciation of the local area and what it offers. The Tweed Art Gallery is wonderful - so glad you went to see Olleywood and explored the hinterland villages and their Farmers Markets. I hope to see you when you come north again.

These cottages are so lovely, rustic and charming. The property is so peaceful and private you truly feel you are miles from anywhere but you are not.
You are near Byron Bay, Murwillumbah, Uki and many other interesting places and markets to visit.
Another highlight for me was I was able to take my four legged friend so that was a lovely treat for her too.
Unfortunately there were a couple of hiccups when the owner was away this year and someone else was managing the place, but do not let the other comments on this site put you off, it really is a lovely place.
I cant wait to go again and i think my dog feels the same!
cheers Janead

I stayed at this place a while ago, but from more recent reviews it doesn't appear to have changed. I continually had to chase up the caretaker to fix the water pump and toilet - then wait for an hour or so while the work was done. The owner explained she was ill, but so was I when I was there seeking a rest, so this carried no weight with me . . .

Unfortunately, I cannot find a record of this reviewer's name on my calendar or tax information for July 2015. Perhaps it was boooked in another name. I wish it had been made closer to the time the guest stayed. I always send a thankyou to every guest after they have left, following up on their comments. I am a sole-operator, I love sharing my property with others, and do not have a caretaker on site. Just me. However, I do have a very loyal group of local tradespeople who are on call to fix problems I cannot. This property is in a rural area, is dependent on tankwater and pumping that water from underground. Most guests aren't aware that town water isn't available here. I can only surmise that the tradie was elsewhere and not immediately available. My apologies that to fix the problem, the guest was disturbed. Unfortunately, this was necessary. I am happy to offer this guest a return stay to see all the improvements made since his visit, and welcome him to send me more information of the date and particular cottage in a less public way.

My week at Crabbes Creek Cottages met all of my expectations. I was very impressed by the cottage set-up. It was low maintenance and easy. The kitchen had everything I needed to cook for the week and it was easy to make it feel like our own for the duration of our stay.
The outlook and views from every room were idyllic, and although rain plagued our visit, it was very peaceful sitting on the balcony with the hinterland surrounding.
I was interested in a location that allowed serenity for daily yoga, meditation and study/reading. Crabbes Creek Cottages offered this and so much more. Gracious owners, no fuss, other wonderful guests. Highly recommended.
Ps. Don’t forget to sneak quietly past the creek – you might catch a glimpse of the turtles and ducks! I also had a tiny green frog and various birds visit my balcony daily - nothing short of breath taking.

Booked The House after initially being offered a choice of this or the Bales - I chose the House because it had more toilets/bedrooms and 6 of us. Two days prior to this I was emailed to state that a lock was broken on the door of the House so would we prefer the Bales because "its a very sweet house, its lovely". Not happy as the Bales was not equipped for 6 people especially from 3 generations - one toilet and one 3 seater sofa bed to sit on - not ideal in bad weather. The house was occupied during our stay - dont know what happened there - will not be recommending this place any time soon. Choose to book with Crabbes Creek Cottages on your head be it - I just hope you are treated better than we were. Oh yes and $220 per night to boot. I have had many holidays and have never complained or felt the need to send a bad report till now.

Apologies for not being able to offer The House. Yes, there were issues; it was not occupied but being repaired. Management do not know group patriculars unless guests inform. Greeting them on arrival & walking twice through gardens with me, no bedding issues were mentioned. The Bales has 2 separate bedrooms (Queen, 2 King singles, as in The House), an alcove with a single bed + additional beds down sleepout + sofa bed lounge, all described before arrival. The lounge area is small, but there is a large covered patio with additional 3 seater lounge + 2x 3 seats. Unfortunately, it did rain one day of 3n stay. An extra guest came for no extra charge. An accident to guests' car occurred before reaching this property & likely to have influenced the guest's perception. At $220pn, $37pp,tariff is actually less than a shared dormatory in a backpackers' in this area. Management also believes this reviewer's harshness is misplaced.

They double booked us, 3 weeks in advance. It was Anzac day. They booked a Wedding Party and gave our Accommodation to another in the Party. They were not there to greet us, explain to us and there is no telephone reception. We had to travel into town to find them. They put us in a sham of a shack - no fridge, no Hot water and debris all around. It's been a month and still no refund. They do not answer emails, calls or questions. Small Claims court here we come.

I am the owner and, unless I am on a break, the manager. I was away when these return guests were to stay and had left the property in the hands of an acting-Manager. I will follow through on the opening comments - the "they" mentioned , why there was no-one there to meet them and so on. All should have been as expected and promised. Unfortunately, I didn't return to Australia as planned as I had a major accident as a pedestrian at Sydney International Airport on return from China, for which I was also isolated for a week with flu. I was unaware that there was a problem until my return home. All has now been rectified to the guests' saisfaction and with their apologies. But I well understand their frustration and anxiety at the time it took to refund, in full, their deposit. No more holidays for me for a long time! Guests can continue to expect the punctual, friendly, honest service from me for many years to come.

Such a stunningly beautiful and peaceful location, we really enjoyed our stay here. It was the perfect weekend getaway from the city. The gardens around the cottages are breathtaking and the its the perfect place to relax and curl up with a good book.
The best part are the verandahs to sit out and relax with tea in the morning or wine in the evening and take in the stunning rural views with adorable lake in the centre of the property.

Amazing place, will definitely be coming back for a visit.
