The room is outdated but the bed was very comfortable
When you first arrived, my first impression was very worried based on the hallways.
The room wasn’t perfect but we were lucky and I had an incredible view, and I think a lot of it had to do the fact that I called in advance and was very clear what type of views I wanted with the balcony. I truly think that helped. I booked directly with hotel on phone snd not online. The view was exactly was what I wanted with the lake.
I did have to call because the lock on the patio did not work, nor did the door properly shut, and the wifi never worked.
I also asked when housekeeping comes to the room if they could do an extra job vacuuming, it’s really needed a refresher before we actually arrived.
I think they can do a better job cleaning and buy newer towels. Some weren’t I’m the greatest condition.
But the positive is I needed extra towels and they were delivered to the room in five minutes my very friendly lady.
When you stay at this hotel you need to have expectations. It’s an outdated hotel that’s doing the best they can, because I’m assuming the reason we’re all staying there is because it’s cheaper than the island.
Upon check in, the staff was very friendly. We noticed they were playing Christian music at the front desk which I feel like is unheard of nowadays. Our room was clean and spacious. It featured two queen beds, a pullout couch, a mini fridge, microwave and a balcony with two chairs and a small table. Our favorite part was being able to go to sleep to the sound of the waves crashing against the beach.
The continental breakfast was probably one of the best we’ve had. Some of the options they had were hard boiled eggs, pancakes, ham, yogurt, cereal, three different kinds of bread for toast, apples, OJ, coffee and tea. They also offered many different kinds of condiments to suit your needs.
While Clarion may not be a 5 star hotel it’s one of the best chain hotels Mackinaw has to offer. We’d highly recommend Clarion and will definitely stay here again.
They offered us the room next door which was just as bad, although the chain in the door was intact.
We could not stay there. Not only is this place filthy, it didn’t feel at all safe. The door to the “balcony” on the second room wouldn’t even lick at all. Sketchy people hanging out in the back parking lot.
We ended up going somewhere else and just wasting $1200 on this place that is literally so disgusting we could not stay there. We don’t ask for perfection but this place is horrible. I’ve seen hotels with $39 rooms that are MUCH nicer. An inner city Motel 6 would have been better than this dive.
The whole place smelled like B/O — the rooms have not been updated since the 1980s, the whole complex is dirty and broken doors, tiles falling off the tub (and not just a few) and a “beautiful view” of the pot smokers in the back parking lot… yeah, that doesn’t add up to almost $400 a night.
I cannot urge you strongly enough to AVOID this place at all costs!
Let’s begin the negatives with the fact that I’ve already filed a complaint with the Cheboygan County Health Department over the condition of the pool and the spa. When I checked out the pool there was no one in it so the water was calm making it easy to spot long strands of hair floating on the surface. And I wouldn’t get into the spa (hot tub) on a dare. Water should not be a murky gray color. Anyone—and I mean anyone—can use it anytime because the doors are not locked. Someone could literally walk in off the street, go for a swim, use the free towels, and leave.
The breakfast was another disappointment. The breakfast room, located up two flights of stairs, accommodated a large group of people, but it was only open for two hours (7:00 - 9:00 AM). Sleeping past 8:00 AM meant standing behind 25 other guests hoping for a turn at the food counter. I later learned that the hotel had 115 rooms, most of which had at least two occupants, and many had more than that. At least 230 people were expected to get breakfast in two hours.
It also meant standing outside because of the poor layout of the room. The hot food counter was immediately inside the door at the end of a short corridor, creating a bottleneck that challenged anyone with a disability or mothers with small children. People at the end of the line had to stand outside because there was no room inside. Not too bad in good weather, but a cool, breezy morning was not enjoyable. The only fresh food in sight was bread for toasting and some hard boiled eggs. Everything else had been heated from frozen. The coffee and juice counter was a joke. Two out of three coffee carafes were empty as were two out of three creamer dispensers. The single attendant just could not keep up with the crowd.
Then there are the little things that make you wonder: ripped window screens flapping in the breeze, laundry carts everywhere (including a rather nice “business lounge” right off the main lobby), and an unfinished patio construction project in front of the pool building combined to make the place look tacky and unkempt.
Another hotel owner told me that this place was one of 33 hotel properties owned by the same person. That’s 33 out of 40. And they all operate just the same. He won’t worry about his pool being closed by the health department because as long as one of his pools his open he can advertise a pool. At check-in the clerk hands out a brochure full of restaurants that offer hotel guests a 10% discount … because he owns them as well.
This place is proof that you can’t judge a book by its cover.
No coffee, except in-room. “Breakfast” was snack bars and water with a note to please only take one per person. Beachfront rooms are between floors, so if you take the elevator to the 3rd floor to get to 300 level rooms, you have to walk down a short flight of steps to a landing, and then down another short flight of steps. Makes luggage trolleys useless. You have to walk up steps to get to 4th floor rooms. Ice machines sparsely scattered (I only found two). Saving grace was beachfront room facing east, so we could see sunrise each morning. Also beds were comfortable, and room was relatively clean.
