Island House Hotel garners praise for its prime location close to the ferry and downtown, offering splendid views in a tranquil yet central setting. While its historic charm and inviting atmosphere, especially the porch and restaurants, are frequently commended, opinions on rooms vary from cozy with fantastic vistas to basic and cramped.
Despite the professional service and overall cleanliness, the value proposition is questioned by many guests due to the premium pricing, particularly with regards to room quality and amenities.

Loved this historic hotel. Ideal location that has a beautiful front porch that extends the full front. Lots of great seating on porch, front lawn to sit in evening and enjoy the view of the yacht club and water. It’s so peaceful and just off the Main Street chaos of Mackinac Island. The island really becomes something special after 6pm as the day tourists leave and the island is quiet except the clopping of hove’s on the pavement.
The room was smaller, as expected in a historic restoration. But very clean and kept updated. The pool area is enclosed, and wish they had included more doors that could open to allow ventilation. Also opening the patio umbrellas before afternoon heat could have kept the deck more pleasant. Being able to get off ferry and have your luggage deliver direct to the hotel was a nice advantage so we could enjoy our first day arrival and departure day not worrying about baggage. We were traveling with a young grandchild and this was her chosen vacation, and she enjoyed it immensely. Would have been nice to know that room cleaning, fresh towels and new toiletries were only delivered by request. But our fault for not reading the check-in sheet..We did not eat in the dining room since we were traveling with a 10 year old who wanted nothing but pasts and the fixed menu due to COVID offered limited options at a high price. Unfortunately we might have chosen to try breakfast, but again a pricy charge for a limited / fixed menu. So we didn’t get a chance to try the highly rated dinning.
Great place, I’m sure we would chaos it again if we return

My husband and I recently went to Mackinac Island for the first time to celebrate our 10th Anniversary. We loved the location and the charm of the hotel; it's conveniently situated within a 10-15 minute walk (or less) of all of the attractions; Arch Rock, The Grand Hotel, the ferry, etc. The waterfront view from the rocking chairs on the front porch was such a treat :)
There is also a bike rental shop right out front so you're able to hop on and go to cruise the island perimeter path. The Watercolor Cafe is also right across the street, although charming, the service was extremely slow (45 minutes for 2 standard breakfast sandwiches and 2 drip coffees).
My recommendation would be to spend a little bit more on a room. I selected the least expensive option and it left a bit to be desired. The bathroom was pretty dated and we were on the rear corner of the building where the horses come in and out to unload luggage. Especially seeing it was our 10th anniversary, I should have upgraded a bit for a nicer, front-facing room.
Lastly, the meal we had at the 1852 Room was excellent! One of the best crab cakes I've ever had and the entrees were delicious as well. The portion sizes matched the prices and the service was excellent. Would highly recommend, along with the Pink Pony and the Jockey Club over at The Grand Hotel.

We are honored to have been your location of choice for such a special occasion and pleased that you enjoyed our first-rate service, ideal location, exquisite dining, and convenient amenities. A $4 million property renovation was completed in 2019. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, additional updates were unable to be completed this spring. We hope to welcome you back again soon.

We have had a few good stays here but this one wasn't all that great. The common areas like the stairs and hallways need updating and fresh paint. The room had many low end finishes or hack jobs like a plastic tub surround in the bathroom. We're paying 500 a night - you can't put tile in the bathroom and make it pristine? We had to wait 2+ hours for our luggage to be brought up even though it was held in storage at the hotel (the porter did apologize and explain why, but no one gave us an explanation the 3+ times we kept following up). We were told to bring our own luggage down to the lobby by the front desk though it was 4 floors by stairs. The front desk lady was clueless and spaced out. They did not clean our room daily due to "COVID", which makes no sense. Wear masks and gloves and do it only after guest approval that they're ok with it. Wouldn't you want it cleaner for COVID? The wifi was terrible in 412 - not even usable from any of our devices. Next time, we'll stay at Main Street Inn or the Grand Hotel again rather than The Island House. When we pay good money, we expect a great experience all around.

Due to COVID-19 maintenance projects were either rushed or put on hold, and staffing is short island-wide. Guest service employees are working overtime to meet increased demand and expectations to ensure you have a safe and pleasurable visit. Rates remain the same due to added safety procedures in disinfection and sanitization throughout the property. Housekeeping has increased efforts in high traffic areas as well as extra attention when disinfecting rooms between guests. Thank you for choosing the Island House Hotel, we appreciate your support and patience during this challenging year.

My husband and I recently stayed at this historic hotel. The location is great and my favorite part was sitting on the wide porch in a rocker looking out over the harbor. Just beautiful. But, I cannot shake the feeling that we were charged a rate way too steep for what we experienced. The rate we paid was considerably more than what I am seeing posted today.
When my husband booked this room, he was told that breakfast was included. When we arrived at the hotel, we were advised that "breakfast" means that we order on paper the night before and pick it up in a bag the next morning. We were really disappointed because the adjacent restaurant was a nice setting. We were told by the front desk rep that we could still eat at a table in the restaurant. Disappointing breakfast. Food was pretty good, but coffee came in a small dixie cup. On day 2 we tried to eat at a table in the restaurant and were shushed away in order to make space for other paying customers. Even though we were guests of the hotel and had paid for this meal through an inflated rate. We did not see other guests with the same "breakfast in a bag". I would have appreciated a head's up before we arrived at the hotel that this was how we would be treated.

We are pleased that you enjoyed the convenient location and stunning views. Please accept our apologies that you did not feel like the valued customer that you are. COVID-19 has added a significant amount of stress to everyone's lives in some capacity. Rates vary by season, weekdays vs. weekends, date of arrival, length of stay, by the view, number of people in the room, and by room type. Rates remain the same to previous years, due to added safety procedures in disinfection and sanitization throughout the property. Housekeeping has increased efforts in high traffic areas as well as extra attention when disinfecting rooms between guests. Please accept our apologies that the pandemic required an alteration of some services and amenities. We understand your disappointment. We are adjusting to the COVID-19 protection procedures put in place for their safety and ours. Your patience is appreciated as we strive to make your island experience as safe as it is convenient and pleasant. Thank you for choosing the Island House Hotel, we appreciate your support and patience during this challenging year.

The running joke with my wife was that The Island House was like staying at a Disney Resort - but REAL - which is high praise indeed for the level of customer care and attention to detail by your staff. We loved just sitting in a rocking chair and watching the rain on the lake. The rooms are recently renovated and clean. I have no idea why hotels ever thought carpets were a good idea and the new hardwood is so clean and fresh feeling. We cannot wait to return.
We also love the rewards program and appreciated the porter service to the sister property Pine Cottage for our last night.

The fourth floor rooms are clean but very small and the ceiling tapers down. If you are tall, make sure you get a room below the fourth floor. The 1852 Grill is a great restaurant for breakfast, especially if Nina is taking care of you. The outside seating provides a great view of the lake, especially if the moon is in full moon phase. The outside fire pits are nice to enjoy. Luggage was transported easily from the ferry to our room. Check in was seamless and staff were very friendly. I observed COVID-19 guidelines were followed by all staff and guest. I also enjoyed the absence of cars, trucks and overall signage that litters the mainland. The overall island was very clean and I felt safe. The other tourist were friendly and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Lastly, I was impressed with the clarity of the lake water. Lake Erie is not this clear. You can easily see the bottom of the lake from the pier. I would visit the island again.

The traditional rooms on the 4th floor are the smallest and most affordable. For a larger room or waterfront view, I would recommend booking one of our deluxe or premium rooms. As the oldest hotel on Mackinac Island, it can be a challenge to maintain the balance between preserving the historic charm of the Island House and continuing to meet modern guest expectations. Most guests find unparalleled value in our excellent service, convenient location, stunning view, and contemporary amenities. We are pleased that you enjoyed the 1852 Grill Room, stunning view, convenient luggage transportation, and safety precautions. Thank you for choosing the Island House Hotel for your stay on Mackinac Island.

There is no dispute that the hotel is beautiful. Nicely decorated common areas, lots of great seating on the porches and lawn, the hotel is perfectly located, and our room is large and airy. The check in clerk was courteous and efficient. Many hours were spent yesterday enjoying the lovely late September weather from the porch rockers and later in the Adirondack chairs on the lawn facing the harbor, people watching and tuning to the rhythm of horse hooves. It was spectacular.
There are aspects of the hotel that somewhat mar the experience. For $675 a night, I would have expected more amenities in the room. They are small things, but most travelers will understand that small things make a huge difference. The room available to us has 2 queen beds in it. Presumably few stay here alone. There are no nightstands or small tables except the one in between the beds, meaning anyone sleeping on the outside has no where to put a book or glasses, or anything else. There is plenty of room for them, so really no reason not to have put them in. The mattresses are not terribly comfortable, and all 8 pillows in the room are like bricks. (I had neck surgery, and ended up sleeping with a folded bath towel under my head)
The split bathroom is awkward. The sink is outside the toilet/shower room, meaning any late night visit requires washing your hands outside of an enclosed room, and unless you have night vision, also requires turning on the light, most likely disturbing whomever else sleeps in your room. Additionally, there is no area for the soap to be placed except on the counter, and there is no place to hang a hand towel.
There is no soundproofing in the rooms at all. There is street/harbor noise, but we expected that. What we didn’t really expect is that you will be acutely aware of every time anyone in this wing of the building showers, flushes a toilet, or walks down the stairs. Anyone speaking, even in soft tones in the hallway, honestly sound as if they are in your room. It’s fine during the day, but a bit much at 6 a.m.
There is only one luggage rack, so if you have more than one suitcase, it ends up on a chair and not in the closet area. Few people will unpack everything for a 3 day stay, so an additional rack or a small bench would really be nice.
Apparently if you want your room serviced, you have to call the hotel by 10 a.m. or your room won’t be cleaned. If you want your garbage removed, you are to bag it up and leave it outside your room. We travel a lot, and this is a first for us, even in far less expensive hotels.
And if you choose to have a beverage outside while enjoying the porch or lawn, I’d recommend going elsewhere to get it. Being a chilly evening, we thought a Bailey’s coffee would be great. What my husband was given was 2 half full mugs of tepid coffee with a tiny splash of Bailey’s, barely perceptible. He waited for the traditional whipped cream, but the bartender said they were “out.” $36 is mighty steep for 2 cups of tepid coffee.

The Island House Hotel is a beautiful, well-maintained landmark hotel, conveniently located near the main part of town where you can find all sorts of fun things to do. The view of the harbor from the front porch and lawn are amazing, the rooms are well appointed with all of the essentials for a relaxing stay, the service from the staff is top-notch, and the little extras like an on-site bike rental facility, indoor/outdoor hot tubs, and firepits to enjoy in the evenings are fantastic. The only challenge we experienced during our stay was excessive noise. We could hear the guests in the rooms above and next to us frequently, including one evening where we were kept awake until past 2AM because the other guests were so loud. Thankfully they sell earplugs in the gift shop, so we were able to sleep well the rest of our stay.

This was our first trip to Macinac Island. Island House Hotel provides comprehensive information regarding ferry and luggage information as well as what to expect on the Island. Booking the ferry through the Hotel was very helpful and provided a small discount on ferry tickets as well as arranging for luggage to be delivered to our room in a prompt fashion. We made special request due to age to provide minimum steps to our room and management honored the request. While not elegant, room was a good value considering cost of accommodations on island. An inviting broad porch on which we enjoyed one evening with a glass of wine faces harbor and main street below. 1862 Grill Room exceeded expectations for both breakfast and dinner with respect to view (for breakfast), service and food. Bar tender offered special attention regarding inquiry about cocktail special. Check in and check out was efficient. Front desk helped with several extra requests. All in all, we would book here again if we return.
