The lakeside location is within steps of the downtown, but yet you are on the end of town that is less congested, particularly during the busier part of the summer season. The rooms facing the lake provide wonderful sights and sounds, especially at night when the waves lap upon the shore. We enjoyed watching works construct a new pier that will provide the hotel with yet another advantage over other hotels on the island.
It's nice to see familiar faces among the employees when we stay at the hotel and they seem to genuinely enjoy their jobs and want to be helpful. It was difficult to go anywhere in the hotel and not have some ask if they could get us ice, provide more towels, etc. Nightly turndown service still exists here.
Morning continental breakfast is included in the rate and consists of a large variety of fruit, breads, danish and other breakfast items. It was never lacking in variety and abundance during our three-night stay. The hotel restaurant had not yet opened for the season for lunch and dinner guests, but in the past, the dining experience was very good.
There is no elevator in this hotel so that may prevent some people from visiting, but if walking a flight or two of steps you will be greatly rewarded by well-appointed rooms, some with walk-out balconies. It's evident the housekeeping staff takes great pride in accommodating guests. The rooms are all updated, but still maintain the look and feel of one of the older hotels on the island.
I'm happy to write this review. I don't know the hotel owners or anyone who works there, nor am I making a dime by writing this review, but when a stay goes as well as ours, it's good to tell others.
Our room was on the ground floor with porch access. The path to the Carriage House was just outside the porch. We were surprised at how quiet our room was considering its location to the Carriage House entrance, the ferry docks and Main Street.
The room was comfortable and very clean. There was no mini-refrigerator but the hotel provided buckets of ice when requested. They provide twice a day cleaning which includes bottles of water and chocolates. We mentioned in the reservation we were celebrating our anniversary and they gifted us with a bottle of sparkling wine. The porch was our favorite. It was nice to be able to kick back and relax after hours of exploring the island.
The breakfast provided in the Carriage House consisted of coffee (no flavored creamer), tea, orange juice, hard boiled eggs, slices of ham and Cheddar cheese, a different coffee cake each day, croissants, yogurt with granola, blueberry muffins, and fresh fruit cups.
And the flowers and gardens are just stunning!
