Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Stayed here with family and booked the whole house for a few days. Location is amazing, waking up to the ocean views each morning and direct acces to the beach for morning walks after a coffee - unbeatable natural relaxation.
The Share accomodation layout was perfect for us as we were a number of related families that were able to get together in the one place. Free pool table got a lot of use by both adults and kids alike. There were a lot of nik-naks around the property which, although interesting, kept us on our toes chasing a 2yo around to keep her away from breakables. The accomodation and furnishings were a little bit tired but we didnt stay here expecting a 5star spa/hotel experience. Ian was helpful and attentive to anything we highlighted. Would stay again.

We ended up at The Retreat by chance, what a find! location brilliant mixed with good old hospitality by the owner, Ian couldn’t do enough for us.
We met other travellers who we can now call friends, a unique place to stay. You reap what you sow 😊

good location, right next to the local pub and you can see the water from the bedroom. Very nice, I stayed with my 2 grandparents and they felt very comfortable in the beds provided- when we stayed it was just us at the retreat so we had no issues sharing space with others.

The location is right on the beach... but this is the only positive. The accommodation has a bug problem; ants were found in the beds, over the countertops and in the bathroom, but this is least of its issues.
This place is one big share house with individual rooms and shared facilities. I felt extremely unsafe in this accommodation as you never know who is coming or going. The house is never locked, and while the front bedroom doors lock.... the sliding back doors to the room do not lock?! These back doors all link to one shared balcony so anyone from any other room can enter yours. Additionally, the owner has a tendency to say inappropriate comments to females, which adds to the unsafe feeling.

I would absolutely not recommend this place… unless you are hiring the entire house and were not with any females.

The location is great, right on the beach. But it was dirty everywhere (room, kitchen, bathroom) and full of bugs and mosqitous. The place has the potential to be a treasure.
We won't come back and advice visitors to avoid the place.

Great place to stay for buisness or a holiday, waking up and seeing the beach just over the balcony. Fully furnished kitchen, pool table and TV made down time enjoyable and pass without a breeze. Ian and Ron were there if you ever had a query or an issue. Would definetly come here again on my own holiday

This accomodation was booked on my behalf with a group of colleagues. I was pleasntly surprised by the location literally 20 meters out the back door onto the beach. The pool table fully equipped kitchen and living area were well used by all ten of us. Ian is a great bloke who will bend over backwards to help in anyway to make your stay pleasent. If i am ever up this way again on holidays this will be my goto accomodatian. Thanks Ian (owner) and Ron (on site manager) for all of your help.

The Retreat used to be a rest place (Retreat) for nuns working in the Missions. It is situated right on the beach, overlooking the Palm Island group. Each bedroom faces onto that wonderful view. I was there over the Easter weekend - the sunrise on Easter Sunday morning was stunning, if not quite spiritual too. The moon rising over the sea is wonderful too.
Ian and Denise have done a lot to get the place shipshape. There are new a/c's. New bed linen, and comfortable beds. The kitchen is spacious. The lounge room is huge, and the place has everything you need for a good stay. It is also quiet, so it does give you a chance to truly unwind and enjoy some space. I certainly recommend the Retreat, and will be back again.
