The 8th Maine lodge is a wonderful, historic place to experience the Maine Coast. Located a short walk from the Peaks Island Ferry terminal, you can listen to the surf and use it as a home base for exploring the island. The Queen Anne style lodge is lightly restored from its 1880s condition. It has huge high ceilings and magical...

Beautiful place to stay - very basic but the beauty of the building and views on the water blow you away. No central heating, so be sure to request an electric blanket and space heater on cold nights!

We have going to the 8TH since the late 1970s. We must like it. Along with Peaks Island it is a great way to slow down your life for a while. You are stepping back into the past (Name your own era). If you want to speed things up for an evening Portland is just a twenty-minute ferry ride away.

A quirky, relaxing, intriguing place to stay. Fall asleep with the sound of the waves crashing below. Look out in the Atlantic and fill your soul with the beauty and peace it resonates. It is not fancy. Bath facillities are shared. It is like a walk back in time. Cook in, eat out on the island, or take the ferry...

We had the best room with a panoramic view of the ocean and the sounds of waves crashing on shore. It was amazing. I was not quite prepared for the eating situation, which is great, but did not bring any groceries. Shopping on the island is quite expensive, so come prepared. They have a common seating area where you can...

This place is magical. Beautiful views of the ocean, an incredible porch for reading or relaxing, and easy access to all Peaks has to offer. The entire property feels like you've stepped back in time to a simpler time. Be sure to use the outdoor shower as the view cannot be beat.

The 8th Maine is not like other hotels, and you have to be willing to go with sharing bathrooms (1 shower each for men and women--men's is on a different floor from the rooms) and a rustic feel in general, but it is a fabulous place! Right on the water, with porches I could sit on for hours just watching...

Eighth Maine is a wonderful old ocean-front, wrap-around porch, bead-board paneling sort of place. It feels like a cross between a hostel and a summer camp, with baths down the hall. Not fancy, but charming. It's like stepping back in time. The Maine history of involvement in the Civil War is displayed, right along with ping pong, a piano, and rockers...

We enjoyed our stay at 8th Maine. What a unique place. Love the history and the view of the ocean. Sitting on the porch is heaven. Everyone is so friendly, and I always meet some interesting new friends.

Delightful, historically charming spot, close to town and the the seaside roads. Some of us stayed overnight, some ferried out for dinner only. Fun cooking/eating together, lovely views, great time all!
