We recently stayed in Cottage 4 at Emu Bay Holiday Homes and had an overall pleasant experience. The amenities were generally satisfactory, and the environment surrounding the property was pristine, offering a relaxing atmosphere with stunning views of Emu Bay Beach. We particularly enjoyed using the BBQ while dining outdoors, watching the waves roll in—a truly memorable part of our stay.

The bedding was clean and crisp, though the bed itself was a bit too soft and lumpy for our liking. The kitchen, despite its small size, was well appointed and functional, allowing us to prepare meals with ease. Hot water was instant, and the showers were a pleasure, which we greatly appreciated.

We did have a small hiccup with the breakfast basket, which was overlooked due to a booking change. The custodians were quick to deliver a basket later that evening, which we were grateful for. Unfortunately, most of the items were past their best-before date, which was a bit disappointing.

WiFi was a little patchy, but it worked for the most part and wasn’t a significant issue for us. One thing to note for future visitors is that booking directly with the property may offer better rates than going through third-party services like Sealink.

Overall, it was a nice stay with just a few minor issues, but the beautiful location and peaceful surroundings definitely made up for it.

First, set expectations -- this is a little holiday home surrounded by wildlife. It's not fancy, but that's not why you come to Kangaroo Island -- you come for the wildlife and you get it. The house is cute and has the basics you need.

It was awesome seeing kangaroos everywhere on property late afternoon to dusk, and koalas in the trees right outside the house (because there really is a colony that lives there). Note that we saw more kangaroos the first day than the second, so don't be disappointed if you don't see them right away.

We ate out in Kingscote the first night, then bought groceries and cooked in the second. They had everything we needed for cooking, and we ate outside watching the wildlife.

We could walk right to the beach, and one day drove to the beach and on the beach.

The most spectacular thing was the night sky - with no light pollution on the island, it's an emotional, life-changing experience. By staying in Emu Bay (vs the city), you get this kind of view.

It's probably no further to the sites than staying in Kingscote.

I liked how we use the water from getting the shower hot (suds-free) to fill the birdbath and kangaroo drinking stations. Very sustainable.

SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT
Had we known in advance what a hassle it would be to have an electric car, and that KI had ceased supporting electric charging, I wouldn't have rented one, and my stay would have been less stressful. The hosts provided extensive reading material to prepare for the trip, but I would have appreciated knowing that, plus that it's better to have an SUV/truck given how many roads are unpaved. That's not the hosts' fault, but adding it to their materials would be super useful.

The directions for where to put compost materials seemed straightforward but nothing was labeled, and I had to walk up to someone else's house to deposit them and recyclables. Feels like they could be in a shared location and better labeled.

Hi CheryllY5913GO; Thank you, we do appreciate your kind and lovely feedback. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Emu Bay Holiday Homes. And delighted that you especially enjoyed seeing and viewing the resident koalas and the varied wildlife at Emu Bay Holiday Homes. The splendour of the night skies at Emu Bay is a truly unforgettable and an added value experience, and this is indeed made even better with very little light pollution. It was a pleasure to have you as guests. And yes (if the rental company permits) a SUV or 'Ute' for unpaved roads is a good idea for additional exploration of Kangaroo Island from the central location of Emu Bay. Hope you have a safe and a pleasant onward journey. Looking forward to seeing you back again on authentic Kangaroo Island. Kind regards from Emu Bay Holiday Homes.

First off KI as a place is amazing and not highlighted enough on locations to visit when travelling from the UK. We booked 6 nights having researched all about the Island and what it had to offer in terms of scenery, things to do and wildlife and were not disappointed so definitely ensure you visit.
As a place to stay then Emu Bay Holiday Homes was 5 stars in terms of what we were after as was comfortable, had all amenities, great location and so much wildlife.
We stayed in Shalom House which was clean, stocked for self catering, located perfectly for peace throughout the day and reguarly had Koalas, Kangaroos and Echidnas outside our windows we could go out and watch up close anytime from sunrise to nights end.
You could have strolls down to Emu Bay beach 5 mins away or travel to Kingscote for supplies 15mins driveaway.
If you are visiting you should know anyway but the Island is big and takes a lot of driving to visit most places which we did but all the driving is through scenic landscapes and hardly any cara on the roads makong for a relaxing tour of the island at your own leisure.
We have stayedany places when visiting Australia bit this was definitely the best if you combine accomodation and location and Rene was nice to deal with when booking and also made us aware a couple of times where Koalas were close by for us to go and view.

Thank you for your lovely description review. Totally agree - the island is so much bigger than most people realise and a 4-7 night stay is highly recommended. We are so happy that you found Shalom house clean, stocked for self catering, and in a perfect location for peace and wildlife on your doorstep. We appreciate your comments highlighting out great location to the beach, easy access to KINGSCOTE and well located for all your sightseeing.

Irrespective of how beautiful the view is or the facilities, it's no fun when the paper work on when the booking is done is not maintained or communicated correct.
It was extremely stressful to be asked to leave the apartment with 15 min notice after cleaning up a sink full of vessels, when according to the booking information we got, we had the place until the next day 10 am.
We tried cancelling for last day before starting the trip a few days back, since the ferry timings did not match, the request got rejected and we were told that we will get no money back. So we thought to stay that day until the evening and take the last ferry back. On the day at lunch 12:45pm they came and told us to clean up and leave at 13:00 pm since there is booking for the next guest at 14:00 pm - whereas according to us , we had the place until the next day 10am.

We got no refund of the money so far for the email we sent. This was very stressful to be thrown out from the apartment when we had been living there for 3d/2 nights and expected to clean up and leave in 15 min.

Was hoping to return some day. Never again to this accommodation.

Good day U2305FVdivyas Thank you for your feedback. Sadly, your review is in fact misleading and incomplete and unilateral therefore quite an invalid and biased review of Emu Bay Holiday Homes. The guest made a booking via the well-known Booking channel (on 27/08) for arriving check-in 17/12 and departure check-out 21/12. The booking was made for 2 x adults. The guest then made an adjustment via the Booking channel (on 04/09) for departure check-out 20/12. This was accepted by Emu Bay Holiday Homes. The Booking channel subsequently adjusted this on the reservations systems thus the accommodation unit became available for 20/12 and was subsequently booked (via the same well-known Booking channel) for another guest arriving on 20/12. We can affirm that the administration on our side was clarified and verified as in order and in fact no double booking, or as assumed as “sloppy paperwork” or miscommunicated. Our and the well-known Booking channel records affirm and support his. At no time did this guest communicate or affirm that they plan to accept as understood and approved that they would be and intend departing late afternoon on 20/12 therefore vacating the Cabin late afternoon on 20/12. Aftercall the guest had requested an adjustment to departure check-out 20/12 (from 21/12), and this was approved by the venue. We approached the guest before 13:00 and clarified that their booking adjustment implied that they would be departing 20/12 and not on 21/12. As another guest was due arriving on 20/12 it necessitated vacating the Cabin for a prompt and speedy cleaning and preparation for the next booking arriving. A refund in this instance is not applicable foremost as this is clearly and categorically stated on the Booking Details and Conditions the guests can see, and access of this well-known Booking channel utilised clearly stating “Cancellation: The guest will be charged the total price of the reservation if they cancel anytime”. This is therefore stated and communicated by the Booking channel. The matter of an overstay of almost 3 hours and the fact that there was a child additionally staying too (unspecified in the reservation and additional to the 2 x adults) is therefore not foremost in this instance. Surely one cannot simply adjust the duration and date of your stay for one night less, and peculiarly and nonchalantly accept and expect that you can simply then stay or overstay to the original (and cancelled) longer date. Reviews across sites attest to Emu Bay Holiday Homes’ good reputation and good ethics. And no guest would ever be requested to vacate unless the request is verified or justified, and valid. This Review instead blaming Emu Bay Holiday Homes is misleading and incomplete, and possibly reflects a guest not accepting responsibility for an error in e.g. communication, and neglecting reading and interpreting their reservation with their Booking channel utilised, etc. We sincerely hope that you have a safe and awesome onward journey. Kind regards Emu Bay Holiday Homes

Booked this holiday home when booking our ferry tickets to Kangaroo Island. When we arrived for the stay we received an email advising we needed to pay a further $75 for cleaning.
This was the only accommodation during the holiday that didn’t include the cleaning costs in the overall price.
Our reason for choosing this property was the value for money, however the added cost meant that newer more updated properties would have cost the same.

I am sorry that you did not see and read the terms and conditions when booking on the third party site through Sealink. Sealink unfortunately does not allow us to add our cleaning fee in our rates, and I am not willing to pay 25% commission on the cleaning fee, therefor charging it directly is our only option. When you book directly through our website emubayholidayhomes.com.au all fees are included. The reason we charge the cleaning fee separately is that cleaning is required once, whether you are staying for 2 days or 5, and we don’t want to disadvantage our long stay clients by charging a higher nightly rate.

I totally agree with JakeN. We spent five weeks in Australia in 11 different hotels/cabins/lodges/houses but only had a cleaning fee applied at Emu Bay Holiday Homes. Whilst the accommodation is lovely there are a lot of Dos and Don’ts notices stuck around the place eg recycling water by having a bucket in the shower until the water runs hot, sorting rubbish and placing in the relevant bins outdoors etc. we really don’t mind that at all but to claim a cleaning fee on top of the accommodation cost is a bit much. When we left, apart from changing the bed linen, there was no cleaning to do as it was spotless - even the cushions were plumped.

Good day Aidens_Granny. Thank you for your feedback. On Emu Bay Holiday Homes' booking page and venue overview on the website of the particular third-party Booking Agent, the Cleaning Fee is foremost and clearly stipulated thereby ensuring prior transparency and clarity around a Cleaning Fee. The invalid assumption made to a hidden cost "cleaning fee on top of the accommodation cost ” is instead also attributable to neglecting reading and interpreting i.e. the Vendor Itinerary received.  Received from the third-party Booking Agent through whom the reservation was made.  Which is found on Page One with wording printed in bold clarifying and informing the client that a Cleaning Fee is additional and outstanding and payable to the venue. Instead, misleadingly taking Emu Bay Holiday Homes to task seems to be preferable than doing so with the third-party Booking Agent chosen.  Hence a Review and Comment aimed at the venue that in its very nature is misleading and misdirected, and invariably invalid.  And possibly reflects one not accepting responsibility, and neglecting reading and interpreting i.e. the Booking Page information and conditions prior, the Vendor Itinerary received, etc.  It is important to not only look at the cost viewed, but to actually further read the information and conditions prior to booking, and be aware of the details after booking. The Cleaning Fee was never and is not hidden via this third-party Booking Agent route. Remember Emu Bay Holiday Homes rates through and across our Booking Channels, Direct Bookings, etc. IS Cleaning Fee inclusive – except with the particular third-party Booking Agent chosen and utilised.  Overall and across, our costs remain on par. What is the Cleaning Fee?  It is for paying labour, laundry, sundries, consumables, materials, utilities, rubbish removal, operating costs, and anything else required; to bring the accommodation unit back to the appropriate handover condition and ensure a higher standard; notwithstanding. Therefore, each and every accommodation unit, irrespective how clean and tidy and presentable it may appear to be left upon a guest's departure, is always and definitely fully cleaned again and prior to a new guest arrival.  To ensure that the higher degree of cleanliness and tidiness and presentability is always assured - including attending to those aspects that are quite invisible to the naked eye e.g. hygienic integrity of the unit, checking on issues, etc. Even when a guest in kindness says "when we left, apart from changing the bed linen, there was no cleaning to do as it was spotless - even the cushions were plumped".  This is not enough.  We do not take shortcuts on cleaning and hygiene and presentation, and endeavour to follow positive hospitality business practices and norms. This is after all what our valued guests expect and what they all deserve to receive! If I may speak a word on behalf of Kangaroo Island. South Australia is the driest state in Australia.  On Kangaroo Island water is a valued resource and necessity, and we all use it caringly and sparingly, people and nature alike. Rain water cannot take us through the dry season, so water is trucked in to most parts of the Island half the year.  A little saved water not going down the drain but to a water bowl for wildlife or a plant outside is water not wasted in the dry season.  On an island any rubbish is a big matter, and on Kangaroo Island we endeavour to care for the environment and the Island we live on, where recycling and responsible waste management is part of the endeavour, making any help invaluable and deeply appreciated. Reviews across sites attest to Emu Bay Holiday Homes’ good reputation and good ethics. Aidens_Granny, we are saddened that you have not enjoyed a different Emu Bay Holiday Homes experience.  And in good faith and on behalf, wish it were avoided. Kind regards

We stayed in the Bayview Guest wing, perfect for the two of us, for our seven night stay. Although it is attached to Amani House, (so it can be hired as part of Amani too), it is very well sound proofed and we chatted to our neighbours at times but felt undisturbed by their presence.
Fantastic views of the superb Emu Bay, surrounded by wildlife and we were made very welcome by Rene and Johannes. The lovely Rene visited us to make sure we had whatever we needed and she is very knowledgeable about KI and can answer any questions you might have.
Everything we needed was supplied, including a welcome gift of a bottle of False Cape red wine, local honey and KI oats and the apartment was beautifully clean.
An easy walk to the beautiful beach, friendly locals and a fifteen minute drive to Kingscote for a meal at the pub, or the local Italian. (Booking is a good idea!)
Highly recommend Emu Bay Holiday Homes.

Our family of 4 adults stayed in Amani House for 5 nights. The view from both inside and outside the house is breathtaking! Turquoise water, beach, gardens, birds, koalas, kangaroos all on the doorstep. The house is spotlessly clean, very well equipped and had everything we could have wished for including a second bathroom which is wheelchair accessible and includes a shower with grab rails, hand held shower rose, shower chair and lowered hand basin. As a family with a wheelchair user, we appreciated the many practical features such as the ramped entrance, concrete path leading from the house to the garage and the generous open plan kitchen/dining/living area. The hamper of local produce was a nice surprise and the bird baths and labyrinth added to our enjoyment. The location at Emu Bay is beautiful and the property is just a lovely place to spend time, it is so peaceful and serene. Magnificent! Can't recommend highly enough and would love to come back! Thank you

Caution: While the site was as expected there was a hidden cost not included in the advertised price. A cleaning cost was requested after the booking was done and paid for. This was not refunded as it isn't a security deposit as expected. It is a hidden cost that the owners request you pay directly to them after you think your all booked in and paid up, but before they will give you the code for the keys.
This soured the whole experience. Poor form Emu Bay Holiday Homes.

Good day Jaken651. Thank you for your feedback. Sadly, your review is quite an invalid and defamatory review of Emu Bay Holiday Homes.  The invalid assumption made to a “hidden cost” is instead attributable to a guest neglecting reading and interpreting i.e. their Vendor Itinerary. Received from the third-party Booking Agent through whom the reservation was made. Overall, across costs remain on par.  As sent to prospective guests booking via this route, the Cleaning Fee due reminder is sent inclusive of a larger communication from Emu Bay Holiday Homes. A reminder may also be sent by SMS. In line with positive hospitality business practices and courtesy prior settlement is communicated and encouraged. (Kindly note that in non-group instances we do not place a “security deposit”. A Cleaning Fee is exactly that – paying labour, laundry, operating costs, sundries, consumables, utilities, and anything else; to bring the accommodation unit back to the appropriate standard. A Cleaning Fee is therefore never refundable and definitely not a "security deposit").   Reviews across many sites including this reviews site attest to Emu Bay Holiday Homes’ good reputation and good ethics. We stayed in Amani House at Emu Bay. There were 3 couples, which worked perfectly with the three bedrooms. It was spotless, modern, had everything we needed. The kitchen was extremely well catered for from spices to platter trays, lots of cutlery, bowls and matching glasses and cups and a full size fridge. Just made you feel very special as Rene has been very thoughtful in considering what her guests will need to enhance their stay. There is little playground and cubby house near the labyrinth which we also enjoyed. Amani is the house at the top of the hill so the view is spectacular overlooking Emu Bay. Wow ! It sleeps 8 as there are also a set of bunks in one of the rooms with the double bed so ideal for a young family and two other couples. The adjacent house “Bayview” has an interconnecting door if you want to book that as well to accommodate another couple. Highly recommended, relaxing and a great location for day trips as it’s only 15 minutes from Kingscote. So happy thanks Rene for making our stay so memorable xo

No, Shalom does not have a clothes dryer. There is a washing line with pegs outside and a clothes airer inside. In Kingscote, the main town where you will do all shopping, there is a great laundromat with big clothes dryers.
