If I stay here in July a couple of nights while my son is at a summer program at Notre Dame, can I walk safely to the campus? How long a walk is it, or is there a bus that runs to campus near your hotel? I do not need or want to rent a car.

Yes you can walk to the campus. It takes 15 to 20 minutes . There is no campus shuttle.
