For a few years now have I been a guest and "ambassador" for the Lodge. Business sees me travelling to Vietnam on a regular basis and I always try to squeeze in at least a couple of days to visit Halong for the specific purpose to unwind at Viethouse! The so well praised owners Heiko and Ly truly are an outstanding couple that will spoil you rotten with all kinds of niceties, if you are not careful! Not only will they go to lengths to prep you before your arrival (via emails and even phone calls), they are also very diligent when it comes to making sure you are happy, safe and sound whilst in Vietnam. I have been sending friends and family members to them and never heard anything upsetting- quite the opposite! Transfers, amazing private tours, special requests and general inquiries have all been meet and dealt with in an extremely helpful and prompt manner! Which is great for those, who want to simply relax and not worry about anything or for those who feel a bit overwhelmed by Vietnam. The fact Ly & Heiko are both German and speak English very well is a big bonus! And what the kitchen produces on food is simply sense-spoiling-ational! There is indulgence on food throughout Vietnam, but then there is indulgence on food in Viethouse!

When travelling during summer: You will love the pool!

To get the best out of your stay, be sure to book a room with view over the bay! It's just gorgeous!

Can't wait to be back!

The island is a beautiful setting for a holiday. The lodge served incredible food, the rooms were very clean and comfortable. Laundry was done for us, staff were lovely. We spoke no Vietnamese, so the multi-lingual staff was a big help. Our hosts, Heiko and Li are a warm, caring couple who met our every need. Banking, arranging our schedule, learning about the food: their advice and help was outstanding. We’d stay here again for sure, and will recommend it to our friends and family.

It was a coincident that we spent a night at the lodge. We wanted to get a good deal at Bai Chay boat station for a boat trip, but the many boat-trip dealers confused us with the price and the offers. We saw a "local" german guy at the docks, whom we asked, what to do. He was the owner of the lodge, was extremely helpful and offered us to come to his lodge where he explained us all possibilities. After that we spent a night there. It is on the Tuan Chau island near Halong and Bai Chay. Has great view to the Halong Bay, the style of the lodge is very pleasant, the rooms are excelent, the restaurant is great ( had there the best fish stew lately ).
We were there in January, so it was very cold and cloudy, but in good weather you can also use the swimmingpool.
Very helpful and excellent personell and owner.
The price is mid range.

I would like to preface this critique by stating that if you read my other reviews, you will find i am quite easy to please and often give glowing reviews. The average hotel rating I give is at least a 4, if not a 5. My experience at Viethouse Lodge was so horrible, however, that I basically feel obligated to warn others of the unfriendliness of this place. I am shocked that anyone could have possibly ever given this place a 4 or 5 star review!
My husband and I visited the Viethouse Lodge during our honeymoon through
Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia. Halong Bay was supposed to be the major highlight of the trip, and yet It turned out to be the worst experience of our entire honeymoon.
Although there was mold and larva growing on the ceiling (see photos), bars on all the windows, stains on the cushions, mold on all the bathroom appliances, and at times no running water, the worst part of our experience at the Viethouse Lodge were the incredibly unfriendly and unhelpful owners of the lodge. They seemed put out by our questions, gave us incorrect tourist information, and acted as though we were a huge bother to them. We did not feel welcome. Our room and bathroom were both dirty and had a horrible mold problem.
Also, we were scammed by the driver they recommended and hired for us.
I have traveled all over the world to Africa, India, North/Central/South America, Europe and Asia. I can say, without a doubt, that this was one of the WORST hotel experiences I've ever had.

What promised to become a relaxing 2 night stay on Tuan Chau island near Halong Bay, became one of our worst experiences as travellers. Indeed, the remote location of the lodge secures quiet nights in a merely hectic Vietnam. But we experienced that this remoteness is exploited by the owners in a very unsympathetic way. Firstly we should have been warned by the fact that this was the only hotel in Vietnam where we were charged for drinking water, about 1 USD for 500ml. In all other places in Vietnam we were offered free drinking water in the room. In this matter it is relevant to know that it is hard to find a supermarket on the island, if any.
The lodge is being run by a family of 3, of which the mother and daughter are Vietname but spent decades in Europe. The mother sold us an 'exclusive', 'all inclusive', boattrip in Halong Bay, which afterwards appeared to be far too expensive. 120 USD per person for the 6 hour boat trip is -in the end- extremely overpaid. The sold 'exclusivity' of the trip was the length of 6 hours instead of the 'standard' 4 hours. Well, in reality these exclusivity was achieved by the low speed of the vessel...... We noticed during the trip that we visited no additonal sites compared to the 'standard' trips.
During the trip coffee was presented to us and also a (good) bottle of wine with the lunch. Because the trip was sold as 'all inclusive' we obviously considered the coffee and wine to be part of the package. However, after we checked our invoice balance on the night before we left (we had to leave next day very early for Haiphong airport), it appeared that the drinks of the tour were yet charged to our bill. Apart from the fact that this was against the deal we made, it caused a practical problem, since the lodge does NOT accept credit cards and no ATM can be found nearby. After we saw the drinks charged to our bill, a very unpleasant dispute followed with the daughter, who was relentless in her attitude. The worst aspect of the discussion was her threat to cancel the private car to the airport early next morning they had arranged for us, in case we would not pay for the drinks. Also for this car we were dependent from them, since the island has no regular taxi services etc. The way the daughter approached us during this discussion was despicable and she will need a long, long training in customer care. She was only 'helping' us with driving us to an ATM late at night so that we could pay the -unjust- full bill, in order to secure our transfer to the airport early next morning, which she had threatened to cancel.
For this car to Haiphong airport, by the way, we were charged the same price we paid earlier for a private car from Hanoi to Ha Long, which is twice the distance.
Another detail which proves these people rip you for every penny, was the fact, that the towels were not replaced after the first night. It should be mentioned though that the male owner was most customer friendly. This could not compensate though for the greediness of the females in the house.
The food in the lodge was well above average standards in Vietnam, but so are the prices.
The location indeed offers quietness, but in this case it was used against us. So, do not book your Ha Long trip here and anticipate the dependency of these people. They earned an awfull of money on ours. The fact that a crew member of the boat (the cook) tried to trick us at the end of the day by presenting us a bill of USD 95 for the same bottle of wine, proves that they cooperate with crooks. The only reliable person in this story seemed to be the the skipper of the boat.
Fortunately Ha Long Bay itself fully compensates for this horrific experience. And in the end that's the memory that will linger from these 2 days.
The island of Tuan Chau by the way will not remain quiet much longer, The number of large scale hotels that are being constructed, is overwhelmng and the island wil be fully exploited within a couple of years. What a shame.

Location and view over Halong Bay are amazing. However I have to say that for the price we paid I was expecting more...

The rooms are not well insulated against cold (and it does get cold in January) and noise so bring ear plugs.

The food was good but the prices are at least double from what you normally pay in Ha Noi.

What really pissed me off was the the commission they charged on activities and some train tickets we asked them to help us buying. Almost 50% on top of the train ticket price.

The hosts are extremely nice but that's how it should be in the hospitality world.

If I ever get back to Halong Bay I would only stay there for a lower price and I wouldn't book any activities through them.

We were sent to stay here on what was supposed to be our first night on a Paradise Cruise ship after the Halong Bay Port Authority forced all the cruise ships in for the night because of a storm. We were told this was a five-star hotel (with a five-star price of $95/night) but we were extremely disappointed and disgusted. For those looking for a rustic lodge, this might be your cup of tea, but we found our hotel room in a deplorable condition and were counting the hours until we could leave and rejoin our cruise. First of all, we were told it was advisable to use a mosquito net over our bed given the number of insects present. Indeed there were many insects and geikos in the room, and I suppose we should have been grateful for the net. This was even with the doors and windows closed and the AC on. Second, the hotel offered wifi, but only in the main room (reception and breakfast area). Third, the old TV only had 2 Vietnamese channels and was basically a waste of space. Fourth, the bathroom was dirty and old. Also they had one soap dispenser that we supposed was for hand washing and shampooing which did not function. We ran out of toilet paper right away and there was no replacement. Also the door did not close properly. Fifth, the blanket we were given was stained with blood. Sixth, and, most gross, was the presence of termites in several pieces of wood furniture in the room. We heard the termites all night long, chewing away and saw sawdust accumulating in various spots. The breakfast (Pho and toast and eggs) was OK, but not that great. The couple that owns the hotel was nice enough and helped us contact Paradise Cruises in the morning to remind them to pick us up. But overall, we found the hotel to be dirty and uncomfortable, especially for paying $95 a night.

The Viethouse Lodge is nice. It is comfortable, spacious and it has an amazing pool that lights up at night. The front rooms overlook the pool, so if you have kids you can watch them from your room. The beds are comfortable and have mosquito nets. The dinner and lunches are amazing, especially the Viethouse Lodge Special Spring Rolls. The people who run the lodge, Caroline and her parents, speak amazing Enligh because they had been living in Sydney. They are extemely helpfull and if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask them. The front rooms have an amazing view of Ha Long Bay. One bad thing though, is that the food is quite expensive.

Quirky hotel situated in an elevated position on Tuan Chau island overlooking Halong Bay. Tuan Chau is being developed and there are a number of unfinished hotel / apartment sites.

We ate in the hotel both nights we stayed and the food was good and reasonably priced. Not many other options for dining available within walking distance.

Halong Bay is stunning and Caroline can arrange you a private boat trip to enjoy the experience exclusively in private.

We didn't stay here we were just walking past and walked in and were greeted by a very friendly and welcoming host named Caroline. We were on the island because our Ha Long Bay overnight boat trip was cancelled due to poor weather. We stayed across the road from Viethouse Lodge. Caroline was the most welcoming person we met in Vietnam and we sat with her and had a nice hot chocolate and a wonderful chat. We even returned the next morning for another hot chocolate (and a chat). We then visited Viethouse upon our return to Ha Noi and without discussing our visit to Viethouse Lodge, we found the Manager (I believe Carolines father) to be most welcoming as well and provided a recommendation for a restaurant for dinner for which were were most impressed. Our next visit to Vietnam will include staying at both of these properties purely for the hospitality provided by the owners. Thank you Caroline, we wish you success and happiness. Dale, Andy and Liz
