This was one of the nicest motels we have stayed in. We had an end unit with three large windows. These had been left these open so the room wasn’t hot and stuffy to walk into. Our car was parked in a carport. The room was big and included two luggage racks, which is rare. Everything was in good repair and the towels were large and fluffy. John, the owner, was very friendly.

Great room, breakfast was warm & punctual! We were able to use the washing machine & clothesline, very appreciated but the absolute BEST thing is the bath towels. New, thick & soft. So good to use after a long drive! A short walk to the pub, Min Min encounter, shops & other local attractions.

We had a one night stay at this motel and it was great. A very friendly greeting at reception led to a great room situated at the front corner of the building which meant it had large windows on two sides - very light and airy. The room was large and had a queen and single bed as well as a lounge. It was comfortable, quiet and spotlessly clean.
The parking was a bit tight but it did not cause a problem.
Highly recommended.

I stayed here for one night. The room was lovely. Clean, large enough for 3 as there were 2 beds, a fridge that worked quietly, a breakfast option which was a delightful discovery, and a very clean, well maintained bathroom.

The motel is set in a nicely maintained garden with a gravel driveway.

My first reaction was really positive. Reception was manned by a delightful young woman who made us feel very welcome. The room was spotless and the bed provided a nice, comfy nights sleep.

Highly recommend it.

From the first contact with the owners who rang back and apoligized for missing my call to make a booking until we left it was a pleasure to stay here. Arriving on a hot day the owner had to go out for a short time but left a note on the office door , our keys in our rooms and directions to the on site laundry as to which we had previously enquired.
The rooms were spacious and really clean attention being paid to the smallest details.
Owners are super friendly and we enjoyed our stay and would certainly recommend the Desert Sands for an overnight or longer stay and when next in Boulia swill certainly stay there again

We stayed overnight as part of a road trip. We arrived a few hours past our expected arrival time but the staff were accommodating and friendly about this.
Our room was simple and had everything we needed for our overnight stay. For a motel in the middle of nowhere it was exactly what it needed to be, comfortable and clean. Undercover parking was a bonus.
The only downside was an ageing fridge that made a little bit more noise than expected but it didn't keep us up at all. We would stay again.

Desert Sands Motel is scrupulously clean and had all we needed for a one night stay. The beds were comfortable. Boulia is a well presented outback town with a good supermarket and the pub serves great food.

To book this hotel you need to give your credit card details . We had issues with COVID restrictions and had no way of giving 24 h notice due to no internet between Alice springs and Boulia . They took money from our credit card anyway .
So ensure if you book you are able to give them notice before you get on the road from Alice Springs to Boulia.

Not much choice of accommodation in this remote outback village, but no matter, this place is excellent. Clean, comfortable, quiet motel rooms, friendly, likeable owner (Lorene), reasonable price. Breakfast brought to your room if you want it. The local pub does meals, and a stroll around the town reveals touristic highlights such as the Koree Yuppiree Tree and the Red Stump, where you are duly warned: "If you go any further out you will come out the other side. To the west of Boulia is the vast Simpson Desert. Travellers are advised to carry ample food, water and fuel". The drive on sealed road between here and Winton is unforgettable for its vast, remote scenery, with an obligatory stop for a cold drink at Middleton. This really is the outback: don´t try it in the wet season mate.

Driving into Boulia, an isolated town which appears like a mirage out of the desert, it is rather wonderful to find the Desert Sands sitting welcoming weary travellers in its lovely gardens, attended by Genevieve. On arrival we met the cheerful John who settled us into our room, which was comfortable in every way. Wifi is available. All rooms are single storey and easy to access. There are drinks and chocolates in the fridge for purchase if so desired. Loved the two dogs, characters in their own ways and lovers of sweet biscuits! The use of a washing machine, supplied free of charge with detergent, was terrific and generous, and hanging our clothes on a clothesline in the sunshine enabled us to start afresh with clean clothes. Boulia is a lovely town with a good hotel for a meal, an interesting museum (stone hut museum) and friendly people. You probably can't do better than a stopover and you certainly won't do better than the Desert Sands Motel to lay your head down.
