Towards the end of 2020 I was looking for something to do in NSW that I could satisfy my travel and photography needs and out of luck found this place. It is not a permanent hotel and is privately run and only open when the dates are published on the website. It kind of add to the rare treat of staying in this heritage style mansion in an amazing valley with stunning views.
As I said privately run by a family group who are very welcoming and friendly to guests, they have been doing it for years and know what they are doing. The service and facilities are outstanding, Could not complain about the meals or anything that was provided at this place.
The hotel itself is an old mansion. The grounds are expansive and good for photographers and nature watchers, there is a pool which is brilliant in the extreme heat of the summer. There are a few balconies around the hotel which give stunning views of the surrounding mountains and landscape. You can leave a camera on a tripod doing a time laps and have the confidence that no one is going to come along and bump it or disturb it.
The surrounding area has a lot of potential. Realistically this area could be more popular than Katoomba and is like 1000 times better than the Blue Mountains that the regular tourists go to. There are the ghost town ruins not too far away, the amazing campground and lookouts and walking trails. There is so much history here that you could spend a week here and still find something to do.
Rooms are either private or private with shared bathroom. Being single I took the private bedroom but had a communal bathroom. There were no other guests doing this so I had it all to myself. The bathrooms were clean and functional but you could tell it was like 80 years old which was a rare treat. I am not saying it was dirty but it definitely had that old world charm to it.

Glen Davis is a regional town (well ghost town now!!! ) 203 kilometres ( 3 hours driving) north west of Sydney. It was named after the Davis Gelatine brothers.
From 1865-1952 Glen Davis produced one fifth of all oil/ shale in Australia. It was the last oil/ shale operation in Australia until the late ‘90s. During this period, the township boomed with 2,500 inhabitants all working in the mine, in the spectacular escarpment of the Capertee Valley. Unfortunately, the mine was abandoned in 1952 because it was no longer viable but what’s left today while distressing, is quite unique and certainly worth a trip for any tourist passing through the area. The Shale/ oil works was the last employer of people in the area and was an important strategic resource during World War II.
On our way to Mudgee, and determined to see more of the glorious Capertee Valley (the widest canyon in the world) with its picturesque escarpments we made a point of driving into Glen Davis for the day from Capertee. Getting to this ghost town means driving aprox 9 kilometres on an unsealed road, but it was certainly NOT difficult and you don’t need a 4 X 4. The landscape is truly breathtaking and not to be missed.
The first building you see when entering the town is the beautiful and imposing Art Deco mansion- The Glen Davis Boutique Hotel (it’s hard to miss) Its size is immense, and you can appreciate in its day it was probably a very special place. It was branded at the time “The finest Hotel west of the Blue Mountains” and your mind can picture, the lavish events that would have taken place here in the towns hey- day, during the boom years. Finding such a lavish hotel came as quite a surprise to us with absolutely nothing else around it.
The Hotel today houses 16 rooms and can accommodate 43 guests in its bedrooms with ensuites. The bathrooms have been updated and extensive refurbishment has been done throughout retaining all the hotels former glory. The grand curved entrance/stairs and foyer is elegant and once inside, every room is worth exploring (with permission). The lounge room is grand as is the dining room. It’s like time has stopped still in the 1940s. Even the toilets are fascinating with their 1930s tiles and fittings. The entire place has been lovingly restored.
When you look at the lounge chairs you can picture a stately gent smoking a cigar perusing his newspaper in the corner, or writing his diary by the fire. You question how many famous people of the day would have sat in those chairs. The hotels history is rich, with it at one time having been a Marist Brothers retreat. A small cross can still be seen in the grounds. The gardens are vast and there are lots of statues and hedges of a bygone era.
It’s definitely worth stopping for a morning or afternoon tea as we did. Their scones with jam and cream are to die for, as was the coffee and the service, by the owners, wife and children.
Sitting in the garden surrounded by a glorious 360- degree view of the escarpment was soooooooo relaxing and serene. The country side in the valley is spectacular with cycads, banksia, and eucalyptus trees everywhere, along with so many bird species, roos and wombats.
At $370 per room (for 2 people) with afternoon tea, pre- dinner nibbles and a 3 course dinner, (BYO acceptable), and a hot breakfast ….. IT’S A STEAL.
(There is no internet or Wi Fi though.)
We were so impressed with the hotel we are now planning a stay there with friends. It appears to be a secret hideaway not too many people know about.
The town itself is fascinating with no shops or petrol station. It is literally a ghost town.
There is a derelict picture theatre, lots of foundations of where houses once stood (most houses having been relocated by families as they left.) Today the town has only 25 inhabitants and the nearest shop is 40 minutes away.
Truly worth checking out, the town, the landscape and this fascinating boutique Hotel in the middle of nowhere.
At this stage I have not stayed there just eaten there

This is quite a tricky review to write as there is a lot to like but a lot that falls short too.
Glen Davis was once a thriving shale oil mining town on the western side of the range north of Lithgow. At its height it was about 2,500 people, mainly miners. In the early 1950's the need for shale oil declined rapidly and the town basically shut down. It has about 20 residents, so is very close to a ghost town. It is 82km from the nearest supermarket (Lithgow).
It is almost hidden away in one of the most beautiful valleys one can imagine.
The old hotel became derelict some time after about 1980.
A delightful couple, Alison and Adam, have restored the hotel in recent years as a labour of great love and dedication. It is functional and very similar to how it originally was - a 1940's hotel, not a 2010's hotel.
The rooms are functional, but not what you might hope for. The hotel only opens for groups or on holidays so that catering can be managed where you can hardly duck around the corner. The food is OK and filling but not outstanding.
Not quite the Wolgan Valley Resort, but a very unique experience in its own right.
On Saturdays at 11am there is a tour of the old mine workings but most of the old buildings are gone. The surrounds, including the riverside camping area, are delightful and there are walks in the northern end of the Wollemi National Park.
So the hotel is a very interesting place to stay, full of history, in a lovely setting. You will enjoy it as long as your expectations are aligned with what the hotel offers.
It's a great blast from the past.

so.. I am wanting to take my wife to the Capertee Valley on the recommendation of a friend. My first approach to this place was via an email on their website, after a week of no response I sent another, and again the same sort of amount of time passes without a response, so I ring the phone goes through to message bank I leave a message asking them to call me and after two or so days still no response. I phone again and this time the phone is answered I speak to a gentleman expressing my desired dates for a stay and he says it would be best to put it all in an email and they can then check their bookings and respond. This I duly did and to this date (March 6) I have still not heard back so over about a six week period I get no response from this place. I was then chatting to mate from Katoomba who goes out there to paint and he said that he and his students had visited the pub and were treated very rudly by the owners and said he would never darken their doors again... so that three at least unhappy customers, I have given up chaing them and we are staying elswhere

Room small and dirty. En suite cramped 70s renovation. Service incompetent and condescending. Uninsulated wooden floors ensure you can hear the people next door scratch themselves. No choice of dishes: you'll eat what you're given and like it. Overpriced. Setting is quite nice, though.

This is an interesting place in a marvelous setting. However, people should know that it is very isolated and there is no phone reception whatsoever, the place offers no wifi for internet, and the nearest shop (petrol station) is a 40-minute drive away. It is dormitory style accommodation and the rooms are indeed small. The wooden floorboards make it rather noisy if people are walking or talking inside the building. It's not really recommended for a romantic getaway unless you would like to do a bit of socialising with other guests, as you sit down to eat at the same table as everyone else. The food is outstanding and the service friendly, but I must say, the isolation/ lack of ability to connect with the outside world felt incredibly strange. Glen Davis itself is a ghost town in an extraordinary location. This was possibly one of the most unusual experiences I have had staying anywhere. The Art Deco interiors and objects were charming.

We came here with some friends so it was great the hotel was from a different era and we really enjoyed our time together. The hotel is extensively decorated in an Art Deco style and has an excellent pool room, dining room and Lounge room, magnificent entry and spectacular views of the cliffs surrounding the valley. The rooms are basic but comfortable and I think that most of the rooms make use of shared toilets and showers, which we normally would baulk at but in this case it was fine.
We had a great time!

My husband and I had our wedding there last year and guests still comment on what a wonderful weekend they had at Glen Davis. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking and the venue was perfect. The restored hotel with lovely gardens were unlike any wedding venue I have attended. Our hosts Alison and Adam were so accommodating and relaxed which is what you want when planning a wedding. Everything on the day went off without a hitch. Every detail was well organized and the reception pre-dinner, dinner and bar service was perfect. We made the wedding a weekend event and our hosts also provided us with a lovely dinner on the Friday night and breakfast and lunch the next day. I can honestly say that it was indeed the perfect weekend. I wouldn't have changed a thing!

After years of searching for a perfect venue to hold an English manor house party, I was finally pointed toward the Glen Davis Boutique Hotel. We held a two day party weekend themed "The end of the world" to coincide with the Mayan predictions in late 2012. The venue, set amongst the looming cliffs of the Capertee Valley, was stunning and was matched only by the beautifully restored art deco delights of the hotel itself. Alison was an exceptional host who, along with her family, were attentive and helpful and made our stay very enjoyable. People are still talking about this weekend away and I'd go back in a heartbeat.

We held our wedding at Glen Davis Boutique Hotel and it was a very special experience.
Every aspect of the weekend was perfect. The surrounding scenery is stunning, and the lovingly restored hotel with beautiful english garden setting has an old time charm that lent to a very intimate and fun affair. This was a sensational corner of the world in which to celebrate our wedding with our friends and family.
Alison and Adam (and family) our hosts were very professional and flexible throughout the organisation and event, often going above and beyond to make our day perfect. They were very accommodating of our plans, and Alison even helped with ironing my wet tie moments before the ceremony, amongst numerous other personal touches.
In short, we highly recommend Glen Davis Boutique Hotel. We are extremely happy with our choice of this venue and would stay again in a heartbeat.
