This was a big adventure for my 14-year old daughter who can act a bit "hoity-toity" at times.
I booked the room so we wouldn't have to sleep in the car on Christmas Night while traveling.
The floor was clean where the vacuum hit it, but thick with dirt in any place that would have required actual effort. After my daughter finished her shower, I invited her to debate whether the dried substance on the wall by the toilet was blood or excrement. The heat worked and eventually hot water made it from the boiler to our second floor room. The beds were clean and at least I didn't find any dirty magazines stuffed under the mattresses.
If we had pulled in during the daylight, I might have tried to demand a refund and go somewhere else as the southeast balconies for the third and fourth floors appear to have long ago fallen from the building. (Picture included.) I'm surprised the city of Mt Vernon allows a building of this condition to be operated.
We'll talk about this hotel for the rest of our lives!

This was without question the roughest looking hotel I ever stayed in and staff actual had me go look at the room first before I agreed to rent it. The room was very old looking. I checked the bed for bugs and didn't find any. I stood in the middle of the room and looked at it real close and decided this is what you get for 52.00. I went out to the car and told my wife its old but it seems to be clean and theres no bugs and its 52.00 total. We got a great nights sleep and we had cereal in the morning and left. I want to thank the staff for being honest enough to let me look at the room first and make a decision before I laid my money down. Thank you.

Room was clean and adequate for a nights rest, The front desk was very friendly. The location was good for getting on and off the interstate and easy to find. It's not the ritz, but adequate, for an inexpensive rest place

We were on our way to visit a graduate school in Tennessee from Iowa and we thought we would drive until we were too tired to continue. That was probably our first mistake. Once the clock rolled past one in the morning, we decided to find the lowest priced place possible in a town called "Mt. Vernon Illinois." We tried a few places and all were either full or just above $60. Determined to find a low priced place, we kept looking. When we reached the "America's Best Value Inn" (ABVI) it was almost 2 AM, and to make it to Nashville in time for our appointment, we had to leave at 6 AM. We decided to take the ABVI's $54 for the night rate without looking at the room.
The building is four stories tall, but they apparently only use the lower two floors. Our room was on the second floor, and the entry was external. To get to the second floor, however, we had to use a common interior staircase. The staircase corridor was disgusting - it was probably not cleaned in months if not years. Graffiti lined the walls and the elevator door. We opted to take the staircase, which was in poor structural shape.
When we finally reached our room, we noticed that the exterior walls were extremely thin and littered with holes. Some rooms were in much worse shape than ours, so begrudgingly we entered the room. The key carded entry was nice, but the walls of the hotel were so thin that we determined if someone really wanted to get in, nothing would stop them. The room seemed nice at first, but after a closer inspection it seemed to have not been used in months. The floors were disgusting, there was dust over everything, the bathroom counters had major burn marks all over them, and the water was orange when we first turned it on. Also the toilet did not flush. The beds were uncomfortable, and when we peeled back the sheets there was feeling of uncleanliness that pervaded. When was the last time this room was cleaned, and the linens replaced? The yellowed pillow covers left much to be desired.
When we awoke the next morning, the sun cast some light on our predicament: there were holes on one of the walls, and the room was a lot dirtier than we thought before. As I was getting up, I dropped something behind the nightstand. When I moved it away far enough to retrieve my fallen item, I saw a dead roach behind the nightstand. At that point we got out of the room as fast as possible.
After checking out, we drove around the building to see what the place we stayed at looks like in the daylight. What a wreck! The building was cut in half at one point in time. The ground was torn up too, so there was obviously another half of the build that had been demolished perhaps months earlier. I wonder why they kept this half? It was in really poor shape.
Avoid this hotel, please. It should have probably been demolished with the other half of it. The people were awfully nice at the front desk, however. The only problem with the building is upkeep. When we arrived in Nashville, the Super 8 we stayed at was quite nice, and we probably should have stayed at one when we were traveling on Interstate 57.

I was expecting a crappy room for the price but I was pleasantly surprised! I've stayed in much more expensive places where there was some annoying problem in the room. Here, even though the building is old, my room was immaculately clean and EVERYTHING worked perfectly. All lamps, microwave, mini-fridge, TV, radio, hairdryer, air conditioner, etc...I had a GREAT hot shower, more than enough towels and a fast internet connection. A decent desk and easy chair and the bed was nothing fancy but clean and comfortable. The staff were very polite and there was a mini breakfast in the lobby with clean tables, and a big screen TV. Give this place a try if you are passing through and you don't have 5 star expectations. Only thing I didn't like was no coffee maker in the room. Stayed 3 nights

Front desk very pleasant, excellent Chinese buffet under the same roof, bar-b-que down the street, king size bed, microwave, refrigerator, 80 cable channels, free wireless Internet, art on the wall, quiet, three big white sets of towels, blow drier, adjustable shower head, free breakfast!
I like it!!

I booked this room on Hotwire. It was rated 2 stars and I paid a total of $56, which I later found was more than I would have paid booking direct, although this is actually a separate issue. This hotel is ready for the wrecking ball, in fact it is my understanding that the top 2 floors of this 4 story hotel are no longer in use. Heaven knows what lurks within the walls of the top 2 floors. I was given a first floor room and I decided to try and make it work since my payment was not refundable. The room was just plain nasty. Mold around the bathtub, electrical sockets hanging out of the walls, peeling paint, dark and filthy. The fact that there were only 2 cars in the parking lot pretty much said it all. I also checked the America's Best Value Inn website which rated this location as "above average" ~ a total misrepresentation as is the 2 star rating on Hotwire. I will say that the gentlemen at the desk was very nice, but anyone involved with this getto style hotel should be ashamed of themselves. Do the world a favor and tear it down!! I checked out after seeing the room, deciding that my safety was much more important than $56. I spent the night in a lovely room at the Fairfield in Mt. Vernon.

Stopped at a motel across the street from there where we had reservations. Place was a dive so we went here. Front desk clerk was awesome. He got us in a room, even though is was really late at night. Nice room, but very small.

This is only the second time I have stayed at an Americas best value in. The first was in Beckly and it was great. So I tried this one. It was more than I expected to pay but I figured the rooms were going to be as good. These rooms were not as clean and the air conditioner barely worked. Breakfast was satisfactory. Definitely not worth the price. Better options close by.

I'm not, by nature, a complainer but I feel I owe it to others to take the time to rate this hotel. My husband and I stopped here, late evening, as we were passing through. And my first regret was not asking to see the room before paying. Thw carpet had a "sticky" unclean feel, therefore we then wore flops at all times. After two hours sleep I woke up and in trying to rearrange the sheets (they used only flat sheets that wouldn't stay tucked in) I discover, what appeared to be several small bugs and a larger one. Fearing no one would believe me, I picked them off the sheets and put them on a clean hand towel. My husband think the larger one was actually a mouse dropping Either way, UNACCEPTABLE and, needless to say I didn't sleep the rest of the night. I couldn't even bring myself to eat the mediocre looking breakfast. I brought this to the attention of the morning clerk, and even gave her the towel with the evidence. She said all she could do was pass the info along to her boss. She did call me a few minutes later and said her boss said they would have Terminex "examine" what I had brought in and then make a decision as to whether I'd be compensated. Never again will we skimp on a hotel/motel.
