During our week in Tonga on the island of Ha'apai we visited the Matafonua Lodge, located at the end of the island just up from Sandy Beach resort (separate review). Run by Darren and Nina, this little piece of paradise was just amazing. These guys love what they do and it shows in their interest in ther guests and their... More

We stayed at the Matafonua Resort on our recent stay on the beautiful Foa Island, Ha’apai, Tonga. What a fantastic decision this was! This place was dreamy and romantic too. Foa Island is tranquil and unspoilt with a lifestyle reminiscent of days long past. Come here for a romantic break, a relaxing holiday, to swim with the majestic humpback whale... More

My friends and I have just returned from a trip to Tonga. The highlight was our stay at Matafonua Lodge. Darren and Nina were fantastic hosts. Darren is 'King of Toys and Fun' while Nina is calm, gentle, organised and a fantastic cook and her white chocolate mousse is to die for. Without Nina we may still be in Toga... More

Darren and Nina are the perfect hosts, nothing was too much trouble. I was situated in a family fale which has a decent sized verandah on the front - perfect for that early morning cuppa and a book. Two rooms inside, one for teh huge queen bed and the other containing two single beds. Now if you are a family... More

This place was fantastic! Darren and Nina are THE most hospitable host/hostess as are their gorgeous children (shout out to Lily!). The local tongan staff are also super friendly as are the other employees Jody and Garry. There is a lovely open air verandah with an all day kitchen where you can get pizza, burgers, sandwiches etc and as for... More

What an amazing place, a really relaxing, exciting getaway. Well cared for complex, easy going hosts and staff who look after you well - especially with those fantastic meals! The whale watching was so special, as was the snorkelling, bike riding and cultural tour (very real, not put on). The whole family had a great time - some thing for... More

We had the best time at Matafanua, and Darren and Nina went out of the way to accommodate our 14 month old. The beach is pristine, whale watch spectacular, and fales clean and simple. When we went to Matafanua we weren't sure how it would be traveling with a little one since so many resorts do not allow children. But... More
