We had a lovely stay at Blueberry Bay Seaside Inn Bed & Breakfast!

- We stayed two nights in the Universe Room, which boasts a beautiful view of the ocean. It was spacious and clean, with a very comfortable bed.

- Breakfast both mornings were delicious and filling. They consisted of three courses and had many items that were freshly prepared. The coffee was hot, delicious, and plentiful! Miguel and Monique were very accommodating to everyone's dietary needs and preferences, ensuring that we all left breakfast full and happy.

- Miguel and Monique were wonderful hosts, and made us feel very comfortable. They were very accommodating to our requests, for example providing us with wine glasses and ice. We also had many pleasant conversations with them.

- Blueberry Bay is a beautiful place. There are plenty of things to do there, and it is also close to Liverpool and Lunenburg. If in doubt, just ask Miguel and Monique, and they'll be happy to provide you with many suggestions for fun activities.

We had a wonderful time!

- Colette and Mike

Our family stay at Blueberry Bay Seaside Inn was a very relaxing and enjoyable one. Our room (Earth Explorer) was spacious, comfortable and decorated nicely with a trendy flair. Beds were very comfortable. The bathroom is modern and offers a beach stone-walled shower. Water was always hot and available. Cable television was top notch and had better picture quality and reception then most hotels we've stayed. Hosts Miguel and Monique were both friendly and accommodating making you feel very at home. Breakfasts were diverse and plentiful. Granola and yoghurt, fresh fruit and mini-pancakes were complimented each morning with a sandwich main course on different types of bread. Tuna on English muffin with capers, chicken and avocado, sliced boiled-egg with onion being a few of our morning meals. Coffee was strong and delicious. The inn is located close to Liverpool, Lunenburg, LaHave, etc., making it ideal for exploring these areas. We would definitely stay at Blueberry Bay Seaside Inn Bed and Breakfast again and would, and will, recommend it to others. Bedankt, Miguel and Monique! Steve, Tasha and Lois

For our 5-day vacation visit in July 2013, our first to Nova Scotia, we stayed at Blueberry Bay Seaside Inn Bed and Breakfast and found it to be close to many places that we could explore. The hosts were very friendly and accommodating, and shared valuable information about places to visit and things to do. The room and breakfasts were very good and we brought back with us an experience of a wonderful world.

Right off the bat things started off on a sour note when we were taken to task for being “late.” The owners wanted to go to the beach with the kids and they had to wait for us. Things improved later with some friendly conversation.

When we got to the room it was not what we imagined. I did imagine rustic but there were none of the finishing touches or coziness of other B&Bs. The views of the ocean are lovely from the breakfast room (a porch in the front of the house) but from 2 of the rooms (ours included) it is only a partial view.

Later on things were a little friendlier and I mentioned to our hosts that my wife and I work remotely and needed a better work space. Our room had small television tables and some small wooden chairs that would start to be uncomfortable in a short time. Many B&B’s have a central area where guests can read or work outside of their rooms. This B&B did not. We asked “could we use the front (enclosed) porch which had a large table and more comfortable chairs.” “No”, was the reply. That would be too much of an invasion of privacy.

The next day I told the owners that we were cutting our stay short from 12 to 5 days. I asked them to do what they could to rent out the rooms. I made it clear that the workspace problem was the main issue and that my wife and I could not compromise our work. I wondered if the owners would relent on the issue of using the porch. No they would not. While I expected to take some loss for the change we were unhappy with the room and the owners were inflexible to help us correct an issue when they could have done more. While I put some blame on myself for booking too many days site unseen I believe they shared responsibility. At first that seemed to be the case in our first meeting when Miguel said he would only charge us half for any unbooked days. On our second meeting they had changed our rate and then charge half of $150 (the maximum they would ever get). Suddenly I was paying $1270 for 5 days when the original 12 days would be $1350. In the end a slightly fairer (but not satisfactory from our point of view) settlement was made and the owners did credit back 2 days.

I suggest to other readers that you do read the bad reviews as carefully as the good reviews. You will notice a pattern here: The couple that runs this B&B are only aware of their own needs and not the need of their guests. We met one couple staying at the B&B at dinner in town. They told us that when they arrived they were scolded for being late. I heard outside my window another couple scolded for not being on time. In our case the owners only saw their own point of view – they are losing potential revenue – but never cared that we were unhappy with our room. My suggestion to the owners is if you do not want to wait for guests and you want to maintain your privacy then don’t run a B&B. It is not simply about collecting revenue. A good business considers the clients convenience first, not the other way around.

Hi Chris, Sometimes a place isn't really able to offer what you prefer.....I know other B&B's offer a place in the house to use, if you'd ask for that before booking we could have told you. Regarding the cancellation of 7 nights, tsja there's a cancellation policy, most owners have it. Normally you'd have to pay 100%. We gave you a great rate for 12 nights for persons. But there's a different rate for 5 nights, we guess you understand. Money is always a thing, it's hard to come to a deal that pleases both parties. But we think we made it reasonable. We agreed that if the room got booked after you left we'd credit that money. We are a small family business and need to make money in 3-4 months so sometimes we can't give in as much as you would have wanted. Regarding the checkin time, at booking we try to agree to a time, as we did with you. You'd checkin at 12.00 but arrived around 7PM. You can imagine that a family with to kids, other guests and cottages to checkin we need to know if we can leave for a bit without guests arriving when nobody's there. Anyway, we'll try to find a solution for that, we've had that complaint from other guests, and now we call in the morning to find out what the ETA is of guests, that works better. Ok Chris, thanks for the review although we prefer better ones, the tips are usefull and will make us be able to serve other guests better. regards Miguel

Any accommodation--Ritz Carlton, Super 8, Blueberry Bay Seaside Inn--needs to do one thing right, above all else: provide a decent bed. If you can't provide a decent bed to each of your guests, you've failed, no matter what you charge.

It's one thing to sleep on a bagged out spring mattress on a creaky metal frame when you're a guest in someone's home. You're paying nothing, so you sacrifice. But when you want $120 a night or thereabouts, you've got to pay attention to this. Unless you are homeless and regularly sleep on an iron grate in the sidewalk, you will not think sleeping on a worn out bed purchased in the 20th century is comfortable.

Furthermore, when you're styled a "bed and BREAKFAST", the breakfast has to be better than the Super 8's continental breakfast. Keep your Costco granola and your on-sale silhouette yogurt; I came here for home-made breakfast. My grandma had a bed and breakfast, and breakfast was custom made to order. All you had to do was get up by 9 and you could have whatever your heart desired, made from scratch before your very eyes.

Oh, you can have the use of a barbecue. It looks like one somebody pulled out of a shed though: it's rusted and filthy.

Finally, what is there in Blueberry Bay to get excited about? There's no ocean view from these rooms; there's no wharf; I don't see the appeal. I see the appeal for the owners of this place; it photographs well; but the reality is not so great.

Dear Sacha and Joel, What a surprise to get this kind of review from you guys….but at the same time we know that reviews help improving our business, even if we don't always agree..... We could guess by the look on Joels face while he got out of the car that he wasn’t happy but we couldn’t guess it was about our B&B. We’ll give it a try and write something so other Tripadvisor visitors get an idea how things are around here at our B&B. Let’s start with telling that all 4 rooms where booked the weekend you were here and that the other guests tipped us by $71.00!!, $25.00 and $20.00. They must have somehow been satisfied with our B&B, us and our service... The room you staid in is well decorated and is supposed to give you a seaside, country, cottage feeling, the bed is a queen size boxspring and hasn’t given any complaints since the start of our B&B. But thanks for that, we’re going to check the bed out and fix it or replace parts. Regarding the breakfast, we serve a home made 3 course breakfast. We start with yoghurt, fresh fruits like strawberry, blueberries, apple and banana, granola and oatmeal. Ofcourse there’s a good quality coffee, juice and tea. The next course (you missed it Joel, because you left) was a bagel from the oven with freshly baked scrambled eggs and strips of bacon, served with veggies & garniture. Other days we serve an English muffin e.g. with boiled egg and chicken breast filet or ham, lettuce, tomatoe etc. Or a bagel with chicken breast filet and avocado. All freshly home made and some even home grown but all produce from the South Shore Nova Scotia. Regarding the BBQ’s we have several, one is newer, bigger than the other but they’re all working and it seemed to work for you too because you used it two days in a row..…. Regarding the ocean view, there’s definitely an ocean view from the room you had; an ocean view from one of the two decks and even a view overlooking the woods from the other deck. There are walking trails, you could go by bike, take a canoe onto the lake etc. There is a sandy beach within 100 meters (Blueberry Bay), there is Eagle Head Bay 800 mtrs away and Beach Meadows Beach within 4 kms! Anyway, we’re dissapointed we couldn’t please you during your stay. It would be preferable if you could let your hosts know what’s bothering you when you were there, so the hosts can try to do something about it. That’s more honest and professional than taking of early in the morning without settling the bill or saying goodbye. If you’d read the reviews on Tripadvisor or on our website you’re kind of on your own with your opinion. Reading your other reviews; in all 3 you just complained, you seem(ed) hard to please as well. In our eyes it's sad to not enjoy life, live it! Especially if you are a weekend away and you are in a stunning area! regards Blueberry Bay Seaside Inn Miguel Hassink

My fiancé and I booked a cottage from the Blueberry Bay operators for our vacation for 3 nights in August. When I called to book the cottage I spoke with the owner, Miguel. He said that the cottage had a beautiful ocean view with a large deck with a barbecue and that we had to bring only our food. He gave very good directions and with the help of our gps the cottage was easy to find. The cottage was very secluded and rustic which is what we expected and the view of the ocean would be much more enjoyable if it weren't crowded by trees. I was very disappointed with the deck, or lack thereof. It was very small and old and rickety. The oven only worked on broil so we were unable to cook anything and had to drive a half an hour away for takeout for suppers. There was a nice and clean full sized fridge. The bathroom wall and door was constructed of rough lumber with as much as inch wide gaps between boards so I wouldn't recommend this cabin for anything other than a couple. We were only given 2 bath towels for the duration of our stay and at no time did they come in to replenish towels or empty garbage. All of this we could deal with. On our third and final night however something happened that we could not deal with. My fiancé and I were watching a movie on our laptop (there was no television) when a very large mouse ran along the wall from upstairs and hopped onto the kitchen counter. It then climbed back up the wall into a hole. We packed up our belongings and left. We left some food items in the fridge as we left in a hurry. We drove to Halifax as it was closer to home for us. We are from Cape Breton. I sent a message to the owners of blueberry bay apologizing for leaving some food in the fridge and to let them know what had happened. They did not even apologize for the inconvenience. I requested a refund for the last night and they refused but did offer me a free night at either the bed and breakfast or another cottage. That is fine I don't have a problem with not getting a refund although it would have been nice. My problem was the way they responded to my reaction to the situation. They said that there was no need for us to go to a hotel and that we could have stayed at their bed and breakfast. It was late at night and I did not want to call them because it is also their home. They basically told us that mice are to be expected in older homes in wooded areas. All in all we really liked the cottage, it was a very unique place to stay and was exactly what we were looking for. It is just unfortunate that we were not warned of the possibility of rodents in the building and also how negative the operators were with their response to my complaint and request for a refund

Too bad this review is posted at our B&B, does not belong at this page. Anyway we were sorry to hear about the mouse story. We had a professional taken care of it. Sorry too we couldn't do anything but refunding money.... We were not given a chance to solve the problem. Guests left night before check out leaving the cottage in a mess. Instead of calling us that evening they called us two days later to ask for a refund. If they would have called the same evening, they would have been more than welcome in our B&B and we could have served them a lovely breakfast too. Now that we don't refund them, they got angry and start deliberately try to ruin our business by adding these kinds of reviews... We're glad other guests appreciate the cottage!

I was so glad that we only booked this B&B for one night. As mentioned in Chris D's review, the owners are very focused on their own needs, not of the needs of the guests. Miguel was very clear when we spoke prior to our arrival that there was a narrow window of time during which we were expected to arrive. The morning we left we were hoping to at least enjoy the breakfast which so many other visitors had written about. However, breakfast was not served until 9, which we found too late for a travel day. We asked if we could get anything prior to 9 to take with us and that was not possible. The room itself - we were in the Lowlands - was quite uncomfortable. There were two small, metal folding chairs and one other chair - so not really anywhere for two adults to sit. And the bed is situated in such a way with the slanted ceiling that getting in and out of bed, without hitting your head on the ceiling or hitting your torso on the bed posts, was quite a challenge. Add to this very unattractive décor and this room had nothing going for it. Miguel and his wife were friendly enough, but completely lack the kind of hospitality that I have come to expect at B&B's. As Chris D wrote, it is all about them.

Peaceful.....We lucked into Blueberry Bay b and b by accident and were so pleased!!! It was a special place with wonderful, generous hosts. We had two rooms with ocean views and started our visit with a walk at the shore. The owners daughter accompanied us and she was a joy. Along with her dog and my four kids we explored the rocks, beach and farm areas around the b and b. Dinner was cooked on their bbq and enjoyed on the cute bistro table set in our rooms. The owners provided dishes and everything we needed for our 'stay in' dinner. The rooms were cute and super clean. Great soft bed linens and each room had some unique aspects: Antique chez lounge, oversize world map wallpaper, vintage bed and a TV in each room. The owners children even joined my kids for a night movie watching in our room. That really made us feel like locals. We woke in the morning to a foggy view and enjoyed a homemade breakfast by the owner. Yummy vanilla crepes! and granolla!!! The kids loved the cows next door and the trampoline. The owners even helped arrange surfing lessons at near by White Point resort.
overall we could not have been happier. We really enjoyed our stay and reccomend Blueberry bay with great enthusiasm. We loved the area, the local beaches, the owners were super helpful and friendly. We will certainly return. Thanks for such special memories......

Beautiful home situated in a lovely picturesque location. Host were very friendly and welcoming. However, we were disappointed with breakfast. After reading the reviews on this site and viewing the images on the website we are bewildered with the what we received for breakfast. Although we were asked about dietary concerns it did not seem likely to us that we would be served tunafish sandwiches on bagels topped with CAPERS, a very particular taste, first thing in the morning. There was no cream for our coffee and no other breakfast options provided. Disappointed we missed out on Miguels famous muffins. Despite this we were still drawn by the charm of the place.

Thanks for the review, it's always good to see what's concerning our guests. However with these reviews afterwards, as an operater it's hard not to get a chance to change things when it can make a difference. We thought we made the right choice by serving this mostly appreciated French culinary dish tuna salad with capers, but for you it was probably the wrong choice. We hope liked the (strong) coffee, the juice, the fresh fruits, granola, yoghurt, the baked sliced apple in pancake batter with cinnamon and sugar and sirop, regular pancakes, micro wave, refrigerator, bottles of water, the chocolate etc. Anyway thanks for the review, we learned again, and we're glad you liked the welcome you got and the charming location. Hope to make it up some day with something you really like!
