Not bad, but not great either. For some reason, the beds and pillows had hairs on them- not sure from housekeeping, or someone prior. I brushed them off, and had no problems with the beds- pretty comfy actually. Bathroom was fine, but for some odd reason both the microwave and refrigerator were both unplugged. I plugged them in, and the next day the refrigerator started making a loud grinding noise, explaining why it was unplugged to begin with. It's a convenient location with the beach and lake within walking distance (I did walk to the beach once during my stay). The workers were friendly, but sadly thanks to some storms that moved through the pool was closed for a day to clean it up. It's good overall since it's close to what you're likely to go to for Carlyle Lake (beach, boat ramp, etc), but don't expect much. The breakfast was okay, it was bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, bananas, muffins, and juice/coffee. They do have a washer and dryer too if you need to do some laundry while there. I'll probably stay again knowing it's not going to be a perfect hotel, but I've seen worse too. I'd say overall it was average.

There are very few hotels around Carlyle Lake that can accommodate a wedding, particularly for a large family. The setting for the wedding at Mariner's Village was quite lovely. Honestly, the hotel was pretty basic, but the staff was very accommodating and helpful. Given the size of our family, this was no small thing. Thank you.

Just got back from a couple days at the Mariner's Village cabin. Since this was our first time at the cabin, wasn't sure what to expect. We had a cabin that overlooked the pond. My favorite was the front porch. Had lawn chairs & a fire pit out front. Was scenic & I like watching the sun come up over the lake.
We had 3 adults & the cabin was spacious enough for all of us.
You might want to bring flip flops for the shower, as there was no bathtub. But the shower had adequate space.

Make sure the kitchen door is unlocked when you go outside or you have the key. The living room door has a catch on it & will lock even though it's not shut all the way. I locked myself out, but my son was inside & was able to let me in.

There are pots, pans, towels, (dish & body), a toaster, toaster oven, a broom (no dustpan) dishes, large plastic glasses. There are no dressers, but the room with twin beds had 2 night stands. The blinds in the kitchen were kind of dirty, but didn't affect us any.

A basic continental breakfast is available at the hotel, which is across the street. We went to the Lighthouse Grill for a couple meals. We'd been there once before & will definetely be back again. Food is fairly reasonable & tasty.

This motel room is in horrible condition! Our “non- smoking room” reeked of smoke as we walked in the door! I went to the front desk for some air freshener and the desk clerk argued with me that he personally sprayed the room. After pitching a fit on how the room smelled, he finally gave me a small can of air freshener that didn’t work. When I took it back to the counter I saw many many of these cans behind the counter.

Other issues:
1. AC was a floor unit and we could not get the blower to switch to automatic. It ran on high all night!
2. There were only two flimsy bath towels. In the morning there was no one at the front desk to get more towels.
3. The room lock was broke and a cheap chain lock was on the door.
4. Carpets were filthy. We had to keep our flip flops on at all times.
5. Limited outlets
6. Did I mention how bad it smelled?

We were on a long drive to visit family and were in the vicinity of Carlyle IL when we started to get tired. Reserved a room without much knowledge and were delighted by the friendliness of the owners, the proximity of a beautiful lake with nice walking paths, and the pretty town with simple but nice places to eat a simple meal. Seems like families make this their headquarters for lake vacations: kids in the pool, bikes in the hallways. If you like a family atmosphere and friendly people, you'll be more than comfortable here.

Great spot! It’s a cute hotel with a great view and some added charm. Perfect for a night or two in Carlysle. There’s a great Mexican restaurant in walking distance too. Do you self a favor and try their margaritas and enchiladas they don’t disappoint!

I stayed here while being on a family reunion with my girlfriend. I was originally supposed to stay at the Hazlet State Park Cottages on Carlyle Lake but I wouldn't be caught dead in that place (hence the title of this review). A review will be found under that name shortly.

Upon my arrival here, I was greeted with a warm welcome, a great start! I told the employee ( I believe her name was Kelly) of my current situation. I wanted to see a room first before I decided to stay here. I requested this and she had no problem with showing me a room. The room was spacious and clean. Now, these rooms are very basic, so don't expect a flat LCD/LED TV or a mini-bar, those would be nice but it wasn't happening here, which was fine.

I stayed for 4 nights and loved it! The bed's were nice, the A/C worked like a charm, made the room wicked cold-PERFECT! They had breakfast every morning till 10AM, which was great because I slept in a lot. The breakfast consisted of Sara Lee wrapped muffins and pastries, bagels, toast, and 3 different types of cereal. They had hot water (for tea) and coffee available throughout the entire day. I'm not sure if the coffee (both decaf and regular) were brewed regularly but everytime I went to get hot water for tea, the coffee bone was always full.

The location is the best in Carlyle. Down the street is the Wal*Mart and McDonalds. The McDonald's does have Wifi and does have their signature Coffee Bar. However, if you bring your laptop, the outlets are sparce so make sure your laptop is charged. The Wal*Mart is nice and it does have a grocery section. I would do all your shopping at this Wal*Mart. The food is fresh (fruits, veggies, etc) and the employees are nice.

Back to the Hotel;

The Hotel does have Wifi as well and it is free. However, the connection speed isn't that great. It gets about 1.25 download and about 1.10 upload (clocked it daily). So if you are looking to view steaming material, you may expect some buffer periods. Other than that, it's pretty good considering the area that you are in.

This Hotel unfortunately does not have a laundry room. You need to go to the neighboring towns to do laundry. There used to be a laundramat in Carlyle (next to the IGA and Subway) but it is now closed. There is one laundramat in Beckemeyer, IL (next town over). It's okay but I preferred Breese, IL. However, the one in Breese does not have a coin machine or a machine that dispenses soap and fabric softner but it has better machines. Also, there is a cafe and wine bar right next door and a restaurant across the street, so there are things to do while your laundry is being done. Key note, there is no attendent at either one of these laundramats.

Last, the pool at the Hotel is small but very clean! Also, it's right next to the park and beach, which was closed when I visited but looked amazing and fun!

I will never go to Carlyle, IL again as there is absolutely nothing to do for a city person that hates the outdoors. But if you love the outdoors, please stay at this Hotel. It's close to everything and you will not be disappointed with your stay.

Always,

-Vampire

This hotel is based on an older Microtel hotel design and reminiscent of old roadside Best Western hotels from the 80's. The staff was friendly and pleasant, but a sunny demeanor did not make this a good stay.

First, let's lay some ground rules to establish what to expect. This hotel was never designed to host luxury travelers, so prepare for a far more spartan lifestyle. It is a brief walk from the lake marina, two large camping areas, a restaurant/bar, a banquet/reception hall, and a few cabins. Despite an initial appearance as a full fledged hotel, it is far more accurately interpreted as a seasonal Mom 'n' Pop resort that has a basic continental breakfast. Keep that in mind.

What can be said about this hotel is that an attempt to be as good as reasonably possible (within the confines of what it is) is being made, but falls short. Rooms had obviously been cleaned/picked up, but not vacuumed and deep cleaned (or at least not recently). Bathrooms were obviously wiped down, but not genuinely scrubbed down with anything that smelled like a cleansing solution. Sheets (let's disregard the polyester covers that - like many - probably would not fare well under a black light) were "clean" - as in there were no stains. They were obviously washed before the bed was made...but that may have been weeks or months ago. Musty, ragged, and dingy come to mind. Same for the towels.
When you look at the details - there were attempts to improve the hotel that were only a small margin from being real benefits. For example:
In the bathroom, there was a new shower curtain and new "arc" style shower bar that had been installed recently. The holes in the wall where the install was attempted the first time were still there, but hey, they are trying.
The television is based on DirectTV with an impressive array of channels, but after a few minutes on most channels, the audio went out of sync (presumably from overloading the main box supplying channels to multiple TV connections). Once again, nice try.
The air conditioning/heating unit was effective at removing humidity, but at the cost of a weird smell like the filter had not been changed in some time.
The room had a wall of tinted mirrors above the headboards that could be considered elegant (maybe even romantic) in another setting, but came off as tacky and almost creepy to the point where we had to ask, "is this a one way mirror?" I'm certain it wasn't, but I shouldn't have to wonder.
Because of a missing closet in the original room design (not anybody's fault but the architect - it happens), a wardrobe was installed...great idea, but without a floor it just felt like a closet organizer pawned off as furniture.

The beds are not good at all...ours were stiff as a board, and the couple we came with said that theirs were mushy and they sunk to the middle...but I'm going to let that one slide - given that they are simply old, and it appears the alternative is sleeping on the ground at the aforementioned campgrounds. Just know what you are in for.
The walls could use a new coat of paint, but to the hotel's credit - areas that needed paint touch ups had them. The only shortfall being that they were easily noticeable because of the mismatch of shades of white.
The pool is all right for a cool dip, but the size of a glorified whirlpool. If you plan to swim, you would be better served to do so in the lake from a boat.

The underlying message is that despite what I am sure are good intentions, there are just too many shortcomings to justify the cost (which was over $80/night with a wedding party discount).

Putting all that in perspective, could a major investment be made to turn this into a great hotel? Probably. However, there just isn't the clientele, or the tourist foot traffic, to justify it. The staff seems to be doing okay and earning a living, but the effort and investment needed to go above and beyond doesn't justify the means of doing so. In that sense, I feel bad for this hotel because there doesn't appear to be a business case to be anything better than below average.

Response from Mariners_Team, Manager at Mariner's Village at Carlyle Lake
Responded 13 June 2015
Dear Nathan We appreciate your stay with us and regret the experience you had. We encourage you to share your feedback with us directly as well (or any hotel you stay at). That helps the management assess and respond to it to help with your experience and for training purposes as well. We want to take this opportunity to share with you and all other readers that hotel goes thru frequent cleaning above and beyond normal day to day cleaning including professional steam cleaning of the carpets and anything with fabric. Regarding mattresses, it is a personal experience and the need varies from guest to guest. We are replacing mattresses gradually as per guest feedback. We have guests who have enjoyed the same beds. Again it is a personal taste and we cannot satisfy everyone. We take pride in the fact that each year, we go thru assessment and replacement as the need may be. Linens and Sheets are going thru replacement as well and is always an ongoing process as we are closer to the lake. We did look at the sound delay on the TV and did not find it to be an issue. But than as you know, it is satellite based and environment and weather conditions are beyond our control. We encourage you to share this in person as well because that way the hotel has an opportunity to rectify the situation when possible. Thanks again for your stay.

Stayed there on the 22nd of June. I had to wake up the desk clerk who was asleep on a recliner in the front lobby. They must have gotten up on the wrong side of the recliner because they were in a bad mood the entire time they checked me in. My room was dirty the bathroom floor was comparable to where the dumpster is behind your favorite fast food restaurant. The hotel manager was rude on check out. I will NEVER stay here again, I would only recommend this hotel if you are producing a Horror Movie
