Thala Beach Nature Reserve is a family owned 58 hectare nature and wildlife reserve 15 minutes south of Port Douglas. Get there from Cairns via a spectacular 45 minute drive along Captain Cook Highway. Elevated on stilts, 83 eco designed timber bungalows are discretely concealed within the forest canopy, blending in with the natural environment and feature ocean, mountain or forest views. Panoramic views are enjoyed from open-sided Osprey's Restaurant across the forest canopy and beyond to the Coral Sea. Guests and visitors dine amongst birds in the surrounding treetops, whilst enjoying modern Australian cuisine with friendly and attentive service. Granite boulders, waterfalls and overhanging trees create natural swimming pools blending discretely within the environment. Paths wind through rainforests and woodlands, connecting with secluded coves and beaches, passing through habitats for endemic birds, wildlife and flora. Guests enjoy complimentary guided nature tours by onsite rangers including tree planting, stargazing at an outdoor observatory, beach discovery, wildlife walks and bird-watching tours. A completely organic 650 tree coconut plantation is home to a unique coconut odyssey tour highlighting the extraordinary qualities of the 'tree of life'.

Driving into Thala is like stepping into a whole new world. The rooms are stunning and food sensational. The pool is out of a magazine. Most of the staff have been there for many years and are super friendly. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was because there was no room service, and it was quite a trek to the restaurant.

Tucked away off the highway to Port Douglas from Cairns is this stunning spot. We stopped in for lunch. As the walked in we were greeted by a grand entrance leading up to the restaurant. The views are breathtaking! It is such a beautiful spot to relax, have a few drinks, eat, watch the native birds frolic in the trees and admire the views of the Daintree and coast line. Not only were the views spectacular, the food was delicious. We had the curry which was full of flavour and the meat had been chargrilled before being added to the sauce. YUM! It is a spot not to miss and one in which we will make a regular visit when up this way.

We couldn’t be happier with our stay at Thala Beach Reserve. The food was amazing to say the least. Every meal was a delight. Staff were so polished & professional & looked after us above & beyond. Highly recommend seafood platter on the beach accompanied with a bottle of champers. Stayed 4 nights & each day was special. We were in cabin 44 which is perfect. Close to the smaller swimming pool & very private. The buggy boys were so helpful, friendly & informative. Do yourself a favour & stay at this gorgeous resort. We are so glad we did. Will definitely return.

We stayed at this wonderful place in October. Five nights of peace, quiet and spectacular views. The consideration of the staff was unbelievable. One of us was disabled and could not walk far. The staff, without exception, took so much care to ensure we got around and nothing was too much trouble. They took a phone call at Reception - within minutes the golf buggy came along and picked us up to take us wherever we wanted. The Osprey Restaurant was exceptional, The Chef is amazing and every single item on the Menu was tasty, beautifully presented and worthy of avsubstantial award. Difficult to name every staff member who helped us - but all were exceptional. Thank you for giving a memorable 5 days holiday. You were brilliant,

Beautiful lush surrounds, stunning beach, great restaurant with amazing views and a quality menu. The two pools are well designed and were super refreshing. Hotel and restaurant staff were friendly and accommodating when we requested to cut our stay short. Unfortunately the in-room experience wasn’t great. The bathroom is dated, the deck fan dirty and old, and the two beds we slept on were standard singles with a bouncy box spring mattress that felt very uncomfortable. The pillows on the beds were also very flat and we both had a bad sleep which prompted us to check out and stay elsewhere. Would have expected more from a resort that calls itself 5 star. Also you expect a certain standard and level of comfort when you pay 5 star prices. Would definitely return to Thala for lunch and a dip at their beach but unless they get their rooms updated, I would never stay again.
