Detailed Reviews
The Periwinkle Cottages are a hidden gem. All the comforts of home in a residential neighborhood. If you are into midcentury retro style, these are just the cutest little cottages. 1950s on the outside, completely modern inside. Service from Breakaway Properties is great and easy. My cottage (Ibis) is always very clean when I check in, and I appreciate that although official check in time is 4:00, I always get notified before noon that I can check in early. This helps to make up for the rather early 10 a.m. check-out time on day of departure. The only downside is the rather hefty "cleaning fee" - I understand having to pay your staff, but just add it to the cost of the room per night or something. I couldn't get my cottage for all three nights of my stay, so I stayed in Ft Myers the first night. I tried to stay at another Breakaway property to give them my business but after being told I would be charged the cleaning fee twice, I said forget it and booked the Marriott. Don't get me wrong, this is a GREAT place, terrific location, and I will always stay here. But the cleaning fee, as mentioned by other guests, is an issue.
Overall, another wonderful stay and I'm so glad I booked again. Love this peaceful, adorable property. The location, which is directly across from Ding Darling and very close to Captiva, could not be better. Thank you!

These 4 cottages (in 2 buildings) are a little taste of what Florida was like before the condos and high rises took over. They are about 60 years old but have been remodeled several times over the years. They have actually been updated more since the pictures on the website. There are individual heat pumps now (instead of the window AC units shown) and our kitchen, although tiny, was brand new! Grounds are pretty and well maintained.
The location could not be better: at the northern end of the island, just south of Bowman's Beach and there is a private parking lot for beach access at the end of the road. Bikes, beach equipment and little Weber grills available. We had a wonderful time and found the new management to be professional and responsive. Hope that we are able to return.

Stayed in the Heron cottage, a two bedroom, with husband and 21 year old daughter. Came for the quiet beaches, biking, and Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge, where we walked and kayaked. We love Sanibel, and the cottage was perfect for our purposes. Quick walk to the beach (or better yet, just hop on one of the ample bikes supplied by the cottage), bike to the refuge, close to restaurants, a deli and two grocery stores. We enjoyed our long weekend stay immensely. Property is very clean and well-maintained. Even has a gator in the pond right behind the Heron cottage!

We were at the end of our Florida vacation and wanted to spend one night on Sanibel before we returned home. I booked the Periwinkle Cottage online for a nightly cost that I felt was reasonable ($220) for the Sanibel area. I recently realized that a $100 cleaning fee was added to my invoice. We were amazed that we had to pay a $100 cleaning fee when we were at the cottage for less than 12 hours. We also did not find the location too convenient for a short stay on the island. Although the cottage was clean and comfortable, I would not recommend this property for short stay unless the management would be open to prorating the cleaning fee based on the number of nights the cottage was occupied!

We stayed Dec.28 - Jan.4. Daughter & Family stayed in Heron, my husband and I stayed in Egret. Heron is perfect for kids, with 2 brs & 2 bathrooms, and Egret was great for us. Both cottages are fully furnished with kitchen things, towels, beach umbrellas & chairs. Wagons to take to the beach & bikes are furnished. Private beach is a short block away. Located at quieter end of Sanibel so you see birds, tortoises, etc. everywhere. If you need anything just ask. Extremely clean and well kept up. Just fabulous!

My family and I stayed in the Heron Cottage. Besides being large and roomy, it was beautiful and homey. The kitchen was fantastic, and my family really enjoyed the pond view. We saw Green Heron chicks hatch right outside our window! The beach was fabulous and restful, with beautifully turquoise water! Had the perfect vacation and will definitely return!

This was our sixth visit to Sanibel Island and our second stay with Periwinkle Cottages. We arrived at the Cottages on Sunday afternoon and Mark, the owner was on premesis and met with us. Once we were settled in we retrieved our private parking pass for the lot at the end of the drive and went to the beach. The beach was beautiful as always. Again as I have said in previous reviews, the complaints of the long walk to the beach are ridiculus. I am by no means in good shape and I enjoyed the walks to the beach especially in the evening to watch the sunsets. The neighbors on the drive are very nice and everyone is friendly.
Let me say that if you are looking for 5 star amenities and a large resort atmosphere then don't stay here. If you looking for a quaint quiet cottage for a laid back island getaway then this is the place for you.
The shelling on this trip was probably the best that we have ever had. We found several large welks, a lot of conch shells and some nice alphabet cones. The wife even found a broken rare Junonia. We spent several of the days on the private beach near the cottage. We went down the island to Blind Pass Beach a couple of days and were greeted by four manatees in the gulf early one morning. The dolphins were out every evening.
Took another day trip into the Everglades and located several nice alligators. Seemed like the gator population was down this year but still saw some nice ones.
The restaurants on the island are very good. Oysters at Lazy Flamingo (there are two on the island) are exceptional. Cheeburger-Cheeburger (the original) is located on the island and the burgers are very good and very big. Schnapper's Hots, RC Otters, and Island Pizza Company are also very good choices. DO NOT miss the Island Cow!!Whether its breakfast, lunch or dinner. You cant go wrong. You can pick up any groceries you need at Jerry's Supermarket and the free convenient curb service is a nice touch. The prices are higher than you will find off the island but the quality of the fresh made items is very good.
I again look forward to staying at Periwinkle Cottages in the future. This was another wonderful trip to Sanibel!

We stayed in the Ibis cottage and it was absolutely wonderful. Great bed, comfortable living space in a quiet setting. Our Sanibel vacation was made just that bit more comfortable because for what they provide for their guests: the use of bikes, beach umbrella, towels and chairs. And the beach is a short walk away. Perfect! I cannot recommend Periwinkle cottages highly enough.

Just got back from the Periwinkle Cottages - Private Bungalow - one night early. The night before (actually about 3:00 a.m.) the motion detector went off shinning a bright (did I say bright) light through the door and nearly scared us to death. I thought we were being raided. The room was barely acceptable clean and is very small with no room to move around. If you do light cooking or make coffee, dishes need to be washed in the bathroon sink. Skylights in every section left no option for sleeping in and the AC couldn't handle the hot FL sun beating down all day. The private fenced yard and outdoor door shower were attractive in photos, however, the yard is unkempt with weeds, dead trees and lots and lots of bugs everywhere (which make their way into the room). The Bungalow borders on a stagnant pond which means mosquitos and lots of them. As we were packing the car to leave they were all over us including our faces. Perhaps the other cottages are better, but this traveler advises you to stay far away from the Bungalow.

Our stay at Periwinkle cottages was fantastic. The Ibis cottage was perfect for my wife Carla and I. It was clean and comfy with everything we needed. The neighborhood beach a few minutes away was incredible. We used the bikes supplied by the owners, Mark and Kathy, to get to the beach and back. It was about a 2 minute bike ride. The beach was uncrowded and beautiful. At this beach we enjoyed many stunning sunsets, shelling, bird watching, dolphin sightings and of course swimming. By the end of the week Carla was on a first name basis with the pelicans.
The location of Periwinkle was just what we were looking for. Out of the way but a short drive to restaurants, stores and shops etc. We did leave the island one day to catch a Red Sox game at the new Jetblue Park in Fort Myers. It only took us 45 minutes to get there. On the way back we stopped at one of the many Publix stores and stocked up on groceries.
Our week on the island was a ball. Periwinkle Cottages was the perfect place to stay. Carla and Steve

I pay 119 per night. 3 night minimum. easy very short walk to beach. bikes free. No trikes that I remember. This is a nice place, no pool, just 4 cute cottages with everything you need.
