This is my favorite Disney Resort hands down. The atmosphere is unparalleled and in speaking with other guests, rivals any trip to Africa. Animals are easily seen throughout the resort grounds, rooms are spacious, and some have savannah views from their own balcony. Special programs include night vision viewing and cookie making. Don't miss this gem, even if just to visit for awhile on your Disney vacation. You won't regret it!
This hotel is on Disney property, it is stunning as soon as you step inside, with the enormous lobby, we were lucky to be given a savannah room, which meant we were able to see Giraffe, Zebra and lots of different Antelope from our balcony, the rooms are very comfortable, but ours were quite a long way from the rest of the hotel, the swimming pool has been recently upgraded and looks lovely.
We've stayed at AKL before and loved the Savannah View. We booked a standard room through Priceline and saved $100 on a four night stay. I immediately called AKL directly to ask for an accessible room and was told I would have to wait until check in and possibly pay for an "upgrade". At check in we were upgraded to a Savannah View Accessible room, possibly as that was what they had, though the Cast Member wasn't too happy when I supplied the date/name that I called to inquire way in advance. Upgrade was unexpected so thank you! We noted that there were very few animals on the savannah - sometimes only a few gazelle and a giraffe or two - when in the past it was a lively place. Not sure what was going on there - they are animals or course, but if we had paid the additional for the view I would have been unhappy. Room was a bit worn but the resort is spectacular. Pool was closed but we knew that in advance. Love AKL!
Stayed for a couple nights in a Value Villa which had a partial view of the Savannah.
Pros: Looking out from the room and seeing giraffes roaming in the morning and at night was so incredible. I also loved the Lion King touches and details inside the room. Boma and Sanaa are excellent, and the service is top notch as always. The room was ready before check-in time as well!
Cons: The room was a bit dated. When we arrived it smelled like bleach inside the room and we had to open the balcony doors to air it out because it was so strong. A maintenance worker was nailing a piece of the bathroom cabinet back on, which I felt should have been done before we were allowed to enter our room. The bathroom sink had trouble draining and the pull-out couch was extremely uncomfortable. That was slightly disappointing giving the price-point, but if Disney updated the rooms at this resort, it would be my favorite!
How this place warrants its 4 star rating is beyond me. The gloomy 90s chic gives you a depression - take a look at the pictures and you‘ll know what I am talking about. The hotel has apparently never been updated and it shows. The horrible bathroom lighting is cave-like (not the good kind), the room smells, housekeeping doesn’t come back when turned away at 8:00 am, service personal doesn’t greet you in the hallway and cleaning buggies congest the hallways all through the day. Luggage is not taken care of on arrival so we had to drag it for 15 min through the place to get to our room. Buses are notoriously late. The constant reference of ‚african‘ specialities is culturally insensitive and offending (it’s a continent people) the Swahili is badly translated and adds to the weird vibe of this place. Service in the restaurants and airline check-in is slow and inefficient. The breakfast is mostly beige food. I could go on...
