#11 of 19 hotels in Amelia Island
The Villas of Amelia Island sprawl across 1,350 beautiful and isolated acres, along Florida's north eastern coastline, and adjacent to the historic city of Fernandina Beach. Though private, secluded and protected by a gated entry, the location is a convenient 45 minute drive away from downtown Jacksonville and 29 miles from Jacksonville International Airport. Each villa is independently owned, therefore unique and different. Units come in varying sizes and locations, including ocean view, resort view and tennis view single guest rooms, as well as one-, two- and three-bedroom units, ideal for larger parties, and feature fully equipped kitchens, dining areas, spacious living rooms, multiple baths and private bedrooms. Most complexes have at least one pool. Only guests booking units through The Villas of Amelia Island receive exclusive access to resort amenities of the Omni Amelia Island Resort including several dining options, golf, spa and more.

This is our third year in a row booking at Amelia plantation and second year booking through the Omni. The last two years our condos were severely outdated and old and this year is worse. I actually took the time this year to call early/book early and stress that we really wanted a renovated and nicer condo and one with a good view and was given the EXACT opposite. Unit 261 in Sandcastles is at the very far corner first floor with a partial slice of the ocean and a great view of the condos directly next door. The place smells of mildew. The curtains have crap all over them. My mom pulled out the pullout sofa and it was disgusting! Blood and stains on the mattress and sofa cushions. I’ve stayed in Hampton inns far superior to this place. It’s just disappointing to have this happen two years in a row with this being even worse than the last two. The main pool is insanely crowded. The only way to get a pool lounger in even the first 3-4 rows is to set your alarm at 6 am and walk down and leave your things on them. My husband got up and when down at 7:30 am and every single chair was gone except the very back row where you couldn’t see your kids play. It’s just not an enjoyable experience for the money you pay. It’s sad, because the property and beach is so nice. We travel multiple times a year to the beach and we will be booking elsewhere. Just know what you’re booking before you go.

Hotel's Favourite
We stayed for a week in two different 3-bedroom units in the Captains Court Villas. These are multi-level villas. The main level had the living area, kitchen, dining area and a balcony all with great views of the ocean (the villa starts on the 2nd floor of the building as the 2-bedroom units occupy the ground floor). Up half a level were two bedrooms looking out the rear of the villa with a pleasant garden view. Up another half level was the master bedroom, sitting room, and balcony overlooking the ocean. Captains Court is located immediately south of the hotel, making it convenient to walk to the hotel and use the pool and workout room (I think this requires you book the villa through Omni). The villas are privately owned and therefore vary in terms of the extent of renovation and quality of furnishings, but both of the ones we occupied were to our liking. I found the staff at the Omni to be very helpful, particularly Tabitha and Cody in the front office.

We’ve just spent a week in a 2BR Condo in Beach Wood at Omni Resort. The unit was essentially fine but nothing special. Everything in the unit was shop-worn and every area needed attention. There’s chipped paint, smudges on the windows, sticky doors and very poor lighting. The unit was spacious but not luxurious. Architecturally the unit had very small and very few windows with zero view. The patio can hold 2 people max. On the brighter side we enjoyed playing tennis and pickleball and the kids liked mini golf. The resort was an absolute zoo the week we were there, just packed with no social distancing in evidence. The food at the pool was decent but took forever to arrive as the servers were completely overwhelmed. We’ve stayed in a lot of beach resorts and we had a nice time here but this place needs a lot of work and is not world class. The facilities need attention. We also didn’t like that the resort fee essentially offers nothing but a bucket of golf balls at the range. We also didn’t like being nickel and dimes for chaises and umbrellas at the beach.

My family of five stayed five nights in a two-bedroom ocean view Sandcastles villa for spring break. The villa was very spacious and had two balconies (one off each bedroom). The splurge for an ocean view villa is well worth it, not only for the views but also for the relaxing sounds of the ocean waves. The entire Omni property is beautiful, including great beaches & pools and beautiful tree-lined streets & walking paths that meander throughout the property. We loved the Sandcastle location as it was just a short walk to the main Omni hotel pool & fitness center which we used a lot (some of the other villa complexes are much further away). There was also a nice (albeit smaller) pool at our Sandcastle villa complex, but our kids preferred the much bigger (and warmer) Omni hotel pool. Service at the Omni was mediocre-- lines at the front desk moved slowly, and we couldn't always get through to the concierge-- just not what I expected from what otherwise was a very pleasant experience. Dining options onsite aren't as robust as I expected, and they do require some planning ahead to avoid long lines. That said, the breakfast buffet at the Sunrise Cafe (within the Omni hotel) was excellent but pricey ($28/person), and the burgers at Falcon's Nest (on the Omni property) were outstanding. But we ended up eating most of our dinners in Fernandina Beach-- it's just a 20 minute drive away and has a really nice walkable downtown area with a lot of great dining options.

I don't usually like to post negative reviews, but feel compelled to in this instance. First off, I will say that the property is beautiful and I think would normally be a nice place to stay. The problem we experienced, however, has left me disappointed and reluctant to return. I booked a 3BR ocean front villa for my family and my brother's family. The night before our check-in date, I received a call and was informed that the resort could not honor our reservation. I was told there was a "problem with the unit"; they would not give any further explanation. We were moved to a very remote villa off the beach that required a 10 minute walk back to the hotel just to access the beach. The villa was very clean, but pretty mediocre and in serious need of updating. The resort's solution to the problem was to give us a food credit and discount the bill by what amounted to $66/night, which in no way made up for the disappointment and frustration of having to tell my family that we weren't going to be staying on the beach and instead would need to haul all of our stuff 10 minutes down the road just to get to the beach. Not the worst problem in the world to have these days I know, but disappointing nonetheless. I understand that situations come up but I suspect the resort just overbooked its reservations and if this is their idea of a solution to the problem, I am not inclined to visit this resort or any other Omni property again anytime soon.
