Cabbage Key is a 100 acre island located five miles off of Pine Island, FL in the Pine Island Sound. The Inn, built in the 1940's by the family of Mary Roberts Rinehart, now houses our famous Restaurant & Dollar Bill Bar and six guest rooms. The rooms in the Inn are all different with old Florida charm - they do not have TVs, phones, or refrigerators. We have seven cottages on the island, ranging from a 1 bedroom/1 bath cottage to 3 bedroom/3 bath waterfront units. All cottages have refrigerators, televisions (no cable) and coffee makers, some units have full kitchens. Our restaurant is open seven days a week and serves breakfast, lunch & dinner. If you want to relax on a beach...we do not have one here. But, Cayo Costa is a close kayak or boat ride away. This is a great retreat to discover "Old Florida", relax with a book, fish from our docks & watch the boats go by.

We stayed on Cabbage Key for my husband's birthday weekend, and the entire experience was fabulous! The island gets very busy with day visitors around lunchtime, but we knew this ahead of time and planned accordingly. Mornings and evenings were quiet and delightful.
The inn and restaurant were both lovely (we stayed in the main hotel building), and the food was excellent - the "cheeseburger in paradise" did not disappoint. The best part of our stay was the staff. Everyone from the housekeeper to the general manager was helpful, friendly, and genuinely cared about making our stay enjoyable. Special shout-out to Cathy and Jennifer in the restaurant for keeping me in coffee both mornings! I highly recommend this for a nice getaway with your significant other!

We went to Cabbage Key for our anniversary, and stayed in a romantic little cottage called the Doll house. I had mentioned when booking, that it was our anniversary, but I didn't ask for anything special. Imagine our surprise when we walked into the cottage, and there was an iced bottle of champagne, draped with a red satin cloth, and an actual Anniversary card that they had made themselves, wishing us a Happy Anniversary. How nice! Due to the states Covid-19 restrictions, we ordered our dinner at the gift shop and the food was delivered directly to our cottage. Scott, the restaurant manager, personally delivered our food, and even made a second trip to bring us real plates and silverware. The food was awesome, 5 star quality! Which is amazing when you not only consider the challenges the restaurant faced with the Covd-19 delivery issues, but the everyday challenge of obtaining fresh foods on an island only accessible by boat. The last night we were there, the restaurant reopened for dinner. We had a reservation, but had enjoyed eating on our cottages front porch, with its beautiful view of the water,so much, that we asked if we could pick up our food at the restaurant, and take it to our cottage. I spoke to Scott, the night manager about this, and he not only said that that wouldn't be a problem, but that he would have our food delivered directly to the cottage. We were not only extremely impressed with Scott, but all the staff were friendly, and eager to help our stay be a memorable one. We just got back from our 3 night stay, but we have already booked one of the larger cottages for a family get together for the 4th of July. Cabbage Key is a beautiful island, rich in history and a perfect place to visit, unwind, fish, Boat, or just read a book.

Are working during Covid-19 everyday from March 17th to August, it was time for a vacation break. We were understandably concerned with going to a large resort with hotel full of people. That's when we remembered Cabbage Key! It has a cozy Inn and 7 or 8 private cabins. We made reservations during the off-season in August and arrived on Tuesday august 11th for a 5 night stay with the first night in the Inn. Shortly after arrival, we were having lunch when a cheeseburger (great burger) when staff advised that the a/c in the in was having problems and we were being one of the cabins after lunch. Well, it wasn't just a cabin, it was the Harborview House (2 bedroom, 2 bath w/fully equipped kitchen, dining room, screened in porch and private dock)! To top things off, the staff, especially Darby and Marcie in the restaurant, were incredible each day of our stay. Truthfully, they were so attentive, we could have stayed in the warm Inn and they would have probably made it enjoyable. Definitely thumbs ups for customer service during our stay. Also, the had strict covid cleaning precautions so we didn't have to constantly worry about the virus. Great vacation and I am planning on calling this week to see if they can accommodate me for my birthday on 12/21.

I usually do not write bad reviews. This is maybe the second one that I have written in 46 years, but I feel that people should be aware of our experience at Cabbage Key. First, let me state that I have been wanting to go to Cabbage Key for about 20 years and I finally decided to make the plunge at 350.00 a night. Also, be aware that the rate is subject to change because when I booked the cottage almost a year ago the rate was 300.00 a night and I was okay with it, until I walked into the cottage. We stayed four nights in the Tarpon Cottage. When we walked it the cottage had a musty smell to it and the furniture was completely outdated and different than the furniture that is seen on the website. The outdated furniture didn’t bother us, but the uncleanliness of the whole place did. At 350.00 a night, I expected it to be at least clean. The coffee table had crud in every crevice and old food, the television looked like boogers were smeared on it, the wicker furniture had mold and dust embedded in it, the sink had crud and old food, the sponge they left for us to use on our dishes was an old sponge that looked like it had been used a lot, there were old damp rid bags hanging in both bedrooms, the bed was very uncomfortable and hurt our backs and the whole place was just very dirty. I really wanted to depart early but there are no refunds for early departures. So, basically when you get there you will find out if your rate for your cottage has gone up and if it’s dirty, you cannot get a refund. The other thing that they do not tell you is that yes you do have a private dock, but at lunch time there is a good number of boats passing by your dock or waiting outside your dock for a spot at the dock to eat at the restaurant and the wait sometimes is an 1.5 hour wait for the restaurant and a lot of the boaters are right in front of your dock and will ask you to dock at your cottage to cut the line and this can be uncomfortable trying to sit out there with them in front of you and/or having to tell them no, you cannot dock here because it’s not allowed. Telling people no that they cannot dock there probably wouldn’t be so bad but to avoid being asked, you have to sit inside the filthy cottage. We did eat at the restaurant and it was okay but super expensive. For two people to order two drinks, a cheeseburger and one shrimp scampi was over 100.00. I really love the view from the cottage and fishing on the dock, when it wasn’t lunch time, but I cannot get over paying 350.00 a night for a completely dirty and disgusting cottage. They did ask us how are stay was and when we answered okay and before we could explain more, they walked away, like they didn’t want to hear us. So, if you want to stay at a place with great fishing, a beautiful view, a company who doesn’t care about your opinion and you do not mind staying in filth for 350.00 a night, then this may be a place for you. The point of my review is not to persuade people to not stay here, but I do want to be honest with my experience. I am attaching pictures, to show what I experienced. I hope this review helps someone who may be deciding to stay here, as I wish I had seen this review before I paid 1400.00 to stay here.

We recently stayed four nights in the Cabbage Patch cottage and dined frequently in the restaurant as well as cooking in the full kitchen of the cottage. (btw the food at the inn is excellent) Enjoyed the views of the sound as we sat on the dock and watched the boat traffic coming and going quite close to us--the channel is narrow there! Rented a skiff from the inn one day and found our way over to Cayo Costa where we enjoyed miles and miles of empty beach to walk and explore. Worth the trip right there! Our housekeeper Danny went out of his way to find anything we found lacking at the cottage. Kudos to him! The only real negative I have is the taste of the tap water. We are used to Florida water but the sulfur taste and salinity here were far higher than we are accustomed to, so I would strongly recommend that you bring along your own drinking water if staying in the cottages. (Bottled water in the restaurant is pricey)

We love Cabbage Key it’s our 1st spending weekend . Food is great & Servicer’s are fabulous.. We stayed in Doll House it was okay it seriously needs some TLC could spend $$$$ on a Face Lift Inside seriously for what they charge it could be so cute inside if you’d spend some money on curtains that fit shades that work & furniture plus a New shower curtain .. stick some smell goods in electrical sockets..And it’s nice people write in shells etc but seriously they’re a place for that Not In The Doll House it’s small enough without all the hundreds of shells all over .. would I stay here again yes in another cottage not doll house TLC is seriously needed ..

Can't help it... it's like a magnet. We're drawn to it every time we go through the ICW. This little 100 acre island, just off Pine Island, was originally built as a winter escape for the Rhinehart family. The home, built atop a Calusa Indian shell midden, now offers several rooms (currently being renovated) and an excellent dining facility. The menu offers something to satisfy every palate. We especially like the mood at their friendly little bar. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. If time allows and you're feeling energetic, follow the 1 1/2 mile trail and climb the water tower for a spectacular view. Accessible only by water, this place is worth a visit - especially if you need to get away from the hustle bustle of cosmopolitan life. Now that I've let the "cat out of the bag", I worry that it'll become too crowded with visitors. As Yogi Berra said "Nobody wants to go there, it's too crowded".

My husband & I stayed on Cabbage Key in the Inn several weekends ago. We arrived on our jetski from the sister location, the Tarpon Lodge (also an amazing stay). The island is absolutely beautiful. The old Florida charm has been preserved and the lush greenery of the island is so relaxing. All the staff are amazing, but we have to specifically mention Amy and Scott. Amy was one of our servers and went out of her way to make our morning coffee (way too early for her LOL). She spent time chatting with us during our meals and shared stories with us about her life on the island. It's very obvious that she enjoys her work and the guests. She is especially talented at showing newbies how to use their super funky cabbage creeper take home cup, we couldn't figure out the complex release nipple on the lid, so your drink doesn't spill, but she is a master, so if you ever go, ask Amy to show you her expert technique (I truly hope you get to hear this review during your staff meetings!!!). Next, Scott, our Island host/Master of Ceremonies, was so gracious to us. He also made sure our stay was delightful, with double spicy Bloody Mary's each morning with breakfast. We were also offered a room upgrade for our second night which gave us an amazing sunrise view of the water, just heaven! This staff works very hard to ensure that the experience of Cabbage Key is unique and consistent. The owners should be extremely pleased! One more thing, if you go, you have to get the signature drink, the Cabbage Creeper, and do yourself a favor and just get a double. We will be back soon! Mark & Jeanna Parker

Third trip for a cheeseburger in paradise. If you have basic boating skills, rent a pontoon, follow the directions and chart and find this place.

Dock master will get you parked, server like Marcie will make sure hunger and thirst are sated and you’ll want to leave a few markered dollar bills in addition to a generous tip.

It will be one of the best memories from your trip. Even if the boat ride is bumpy and rainy. So worth it.

The water taxi trip getting to Cabbage Key gives an opportunity to unwind to a gentle island pace. The spacious Blue Heron cottage was perfect for us three friends to celebrate a 74th birthday. The food in the Inn’s restaurant was superbly prepared and server,Debi, knew what we wanted before we did. She attended to every detail with grace and haste. Debi has worked at Cabbage Key for years and has wonderful recommendations for food as well as activities.
