Stopped at the Windsor on a road trip to Great Sand Dunes National Monument. We immediately received a room upgrade from one of the owners, Steve. The room was spacious, immaculately clean with a comfortable bed. The bar is cozy, with the bartender making great cocktails. The restaurant was well managed by another owner, Kodi and the waitstaff in the...

Spent four nights at the Windsor Hotel while staying in Del Norte on a snowboarding trip to Wolf Creek. Only 30 minutes from the slopes! Our room was super sized with two queen beds plus a sitting area. The room was extremely comfortable, quiet and cleaned everyday upon arrival back from the slopes. Rates were reasonable. Spent one night dining...

There have always been motels in the San Luis Valley. They've typically had parking right outside your door, minimal amenities, thin walls, and disaffected staff. The Windsor changes that...it's an historic hotel which has been restored to glory. The rooms are a bit smaller than contemporary city hotels, but the details (crown moldings, period carpets, chair rails, furniture - yes...

The room was great, though the bathroom was cold, which was my only complaint. The proprietor was gracious and funny, the food was excellent, and it has a great bar! I am fond of bars, so having an excellent one is always a plus. It is situated on the main street of a town that is the gateway to beautiful...

This hotel has a rich history going back to the 1800's. The rooms have been recently renovated and are well appointed and very clean. Nice touches include a robe and slippers. Staff is friendly and happy to talk about the hotel and local area.

What a pleasant surprise. The Windsor Hotel is first class. The rooms are clean and well furnished. The current manager of the restaurant previously worked at Wolfgang Pucks and it shows! If you book a room, find out if Joanne is available for a massage. Her place is 4 blocks from the hotel. Joanne is well trained and experienced. She...

Our room was very clean, service was great and all at a reasonable price. I'm only giving 4/5 because the walls are very very thin and our neighbours kept their tv on all night which kept us awake and the beds are very firm. We stayed at the Windsor whilst visiting wolf creek ski resort which was about a 40...

The Windsor is out of the way, but worth seeking out. We were looking for a place to break up a trip from Denver to El Paso, along the more scenic routes. The Windsor has been restored with a passion by a committed local team. Someone actually found the original tin ceiling plates and parts of the original floor. Make...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Built in 1874, and one of Colorado's oldest hotels, the Windsor has been the heart of the town of Del Norte for nearly 140 years. Originally known as "The Whitsitt House", this “Grand Dame’s” construction started soon after the town was founded in 1871. In the last quarter of the 1800's, Del Norte was a booming and thriving mining and ranching hub. Once on the short list for the capital of Colorado, Del Norte lost by one vote to Denver as state capital. The Windsor Hotel was the focal point of social and commercial activity in San Luis Valley area and remained a regional gathering spot for over a hundred years. Del Norte, remained a prospering and influential town in south western Colorado until the early 1970's. The Windsor Hotel too, began to reflect the area’s decline. By 1993, the hotel was dilapidated and in a state of ruination. A wrecking ball was literally looming over the decaying and lifeless “Victorian Lady” as she awaited her final fate. With amazing foresight and dedication, a local benefactor and his wife, Doctor Raymond & Mrs. Barbra Culp, stepped in to save the Windsor from demolition, literally at the last minute (the hotel lounge, Bistro Barbara, is named after Mrs. Culp in her honor). Over the past 20 years, several phases of reconstruction, restoration and regeneration have produceded an eloquent lodging and dining establishment. Highlights are a "turn-of-the-century" parlor, elegant dining and event rooms, and a living history interpretive area. ... more   less
