If you don't expect the Sea Shore Motel to be something it is not then you will love it.
A great clean motel staffed by good people. Location is excellent and complimentary off street parking is a big bonus.

The location of this Motel is excellent. I loved the small Motel feel and the price was very affordable. We were able to walk everywhere, and there is plenty of parking in the back if you have a rental car. Lots of restaurants and bars...More
This is a superb motel right on Main Street with all its shops, restaurants and bars. We chose the cheapest, smallest room, right on the road and it was clean, very quiet and superbly located. Staff are outstanding, extremely helpful and even helped us with...More

This place is absolutely amazing! I walked in and was so impressed with the cleanliness of the place! And the staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the area. This was our first time in Santa Monica and I will definitely be back!
Santa Monica is a coastal town that maintains a balance as a tourist destination and as an area with a thriving local culture. On the beach, bikers, roller-bladers, runners and walkers move along the famed bike path enjoying the beautiful Los Angeles weather. The solar-powered Ferris wheel at the Santa Monica pier spins high above the water, while park revelers scream with delight riding the roller
coaster. Inland from the beach, Third Street Promenade bustles with shoppers and street performers, where every block seems to have a musical or acrobatic act drawing crowds giving Santa Monica both the feeling of a laid-back beach town and a major commercial hub.

It is not at all close or convenient to Hollywood or Universal. LA is very spread out and traffic is horrendous. I did the four hour tour as well, just for an overview and found it plenty. The stop at Universal was very brief, however, so not really enough time if you want to see more. Perhaps one of the two day, hop-on, hop-off tours would work for you to visit all the places at your leisure.
