The hotel is lovely, the grounds are charming, the location is superb. But our room was plain with oddly mismatched furniture, all quite worn looking. For this price, we'd expect more historic charm (or authenticity) in the room.
We stayed in one of the cottages. The picture on the website looks very nice we arrived the cottage smells very old the sofas carpet and chair is very distressed. I sent even hang by clothes inside the closet and can’t sit in the couch. The linen and pillow is very poor quality.
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when we pulled into the Upham parking lot. There weren’t any signs for lobby/check in. We meandered through the property. It was a nice meander. Grassy areas, cottages, Adirondack chairs, rose bushes and a gazebo. When we did find check in we were offered a glass of wine. Check in was easy. Bill the manager was welcoming and funny! Paying more, I booked a room with a fireplace. We were in one of the cottages. Our room didn’t feel like we were in a hotel, it felt like a room at home. Cozy and charming. The fireplace was a nice touch. There are many areas to sit in the garden or in the lobby. Really lovely property. The only issue we had was parking. We booked on a very busy weekend. We have a larger SUV and we were afraid we wouldn’t find parking if we went out. We ended up taking ride shares instead of moving our car. I believe there’s parking on the street though but don’t let this sway you from staying because the Upham is a unique and wonderful place to stay.…
Very personal and unique place. Service is great, room is comfortable with an outdoor area in all rooms. Very relaxing, walking distance to State Street with all the action and activities. Only complaint is their parking lot is very tight in space and once you go in and can't find parking, it will take you a long time to backup to get out or the turn around. Offer extra parking on Friday and Saturday and that helps a great deal.
The Upham is a beautiful property. We enjoyed the gardens and the good location. However I question their integrity. Our room was not what we expected. We were on the first floor. Next to us was the noisy parking lot and the trash area. So the trash trucks come very early in the morning. That might not have been so bad but the kitchen staff empties the trash at 10:00 at night. Then there are the guests that are above you at 12:00 am . I asked for a room change but the hotel was booked. Why do they even book that room?…..even staff members we spoke with regarding that specific room….remarked that room has had multiple complaints regarding noise issues’
