My Dad and his partner come to Poinr Reyes every January seeking birds. They live in Los Angeles and while I know that they think they Hip to the "country" I think they always leave wishing that they lived here. Part of the reason is that they have been spoiled by staying in Gray's Retreat at the Point Reyes Schoolhouse.... More

Birders are some of my favorite guests. They come to Point Reyes as a world class birding destination but never suspecting that the birding in their own garden here on the Schoolhouse Compound will be so much fun. Just this morning I hear the red shouldered hawks screaming from cypress to cypress above our Barn. The eurasian doves are cooing.... More

My father and I thoroughly enjoyed our stayed at the Pt. Reyes Schoolhouse Compound. We were lodged in Gray's Retreat, which was quiet and comfortable. We had a well-equipped kitchen in our suite, and I liked the collection of books about Pt. Reyes. Karen was an excellent host. She gave us tips about where to visit in the National Seashore... More

A pleasure to host you. The Schoolhouse Compound was designed to provide the peace, beauty and comfort for family and colleagues to gather together away from the worries of their everyday lives. Glad we succeeded. Thank you for your kind words. More

I recently stayed at the Schoolhouse Compound [Gray's Retreat unit] with a group of 4 friends. We loved it entirely; this location combines so much variety: being on the edge of 'downtown' Pt. Reyes Station, with its wonderful restaurants, markets, bookstore, bakery and lots more, coupled with the remote quiet and rustic beauty of the GGNRA. Our trip was all... More

Ah, musicians and artists. I can always anticipate that my partners in creativity will be at home with the natural outdoor beauty and congenial spaces of Gray's Retreat. I originally designed it for my parents to share over the summers when our kids were little. My mother is also an artist so the views and gardens were a real joy... More

What an incredible place. This is by far the most authentic place I have ever stayed in. The innkeeper went out of her way to make us feel welcome-fresh flowers on our arrival, recommendations on the best places to hike and special tips hidden treasures in the area that really enhanced our stay. The proprietor is a naturalist and an... More

Thanks for your enthusiastic review. it is rewarding when folks who have taken the entire compound get to experience each of the places to stay with their private gardens and different cottage environments. Couples, families and retreat colleagues can each find a combination that suits their hopes for their holiday together. I'm glad that you found yours and I hope... More

Our experience at P.R. Schoolhouse Compound was disappointing. We had reserved a 3-night stay at Gray's Retreat but were called away so had to leave before the 3rd night. That was OK because we were not looking forward to another night. We have traveled throughout the U.S. and found this to be one of the least enjoyable experiences except for... More

Sincere and heartfelt thanks for putting in the time to write this insightful review. You have nailed it on so many counts - most especially the comfortable authenticity and beauty of the place. We arrived to find dead bugs, spiders and cobwebs everywhere. There was cardboard nailed over a hole in the ceiling and duct tape holding a non functioning fire alarm to the ceiling. We got ahold of the owner's friend who lent us her vacuum cleaner and we cleaned the place together but after one uncomfortable night, half of our party... More

We stayed here for my 60th birthday. Rented the entire schoolhouse for 3 other couples and the Jasmine Cottage. The Schoolhouse is more picturesque than appears on the website, the grounds very nice, and walking distance from Pt. Reyes Station, the only place nearby w/restaurants and grocery stores. The deal is this though: be prepared not to sleep while here.... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
After ten years of hard work at night and on weekends, with not much more than our carpentry skills and determination, we had a home. We raised children, chickens, vegetables, fruit trees and honey bees here, making blackberry jam every summer. We built the wood-fired oven in the garden, a pond, Jasmine Cottage, Gray's Retreat and the Barn Loft. I was a professional artist for many years, then commuted from the Schoolhouse to U.C. Berkeley to become a landscape architect. Twenty-five years ago I converted the carriage house to Jasmine Cottage. It was the very first cottage open to visitors as a Point Reyes vacation rental. Point Reyes area lodging at the time was just a few traditional bed and breakfasts in Inverness with a couple small motels on that side of Tomales Bay. Inverness was the place for holidays then; Point Reyes was a working cow town. Nobody thought visitors would want to stay in the little town of Pt. Reyes. Because I offered a secluded garden cottage with an invitation to bring the children and the family dog, Jasmine Cottage was instantly popular as a romantic get-away and a family retreat. Sixteen years ago I designed and built the barn that houses Gray's Retreat and the Barn Loft, intended as places for our extended family to visit and as part-time vacation rentals. ... more   less

“The four bedroom house on the compound is impeccably furnished, has a full gourmet kitchen, dining room with all the china, serving pieces and linens; sitting room; living room; etc. and feels just like home only better. It is great for a family gathering or group of friends. Very comfortable and lots of room to spread out. We didn't want to leave. The other residences are smaller but well appointed and comfortable for smaller parties.”
