We stopped at Fujioto for lunch after walking the Nakasendo Trail from Magome to Tsumago. I hadn't heard of Gohei Mochi before but we were informed it was the local speciality so we had one each with some soba noodles. It was so delicious - essentially a big rice ball with a sticky satay peanut sauce coating. The restaurant manager spoke perfect English too. Traditional style dining room but you could choose to sit on the floor or small chairs.

An overall great experience that I would highly recommend. Fyi I booked this about 9 months in advance. We had 2 upstairs rooms with a sitting area facing the front garden and a balcony facing the back. It was a lovely outlook. The rooms were spacious, comfortable and clean. Things like a kettle, cold water and a little snack just elevated the comfort. The dinner and breakfast were amazing and one of the best meals we’ve had anywhere. Our host explained everything at each course. The location in Tsumago is on the main st. We were walking the Nakasendo so stayed one night. The staff were just lovely and welcoming. They do have a restaurant that is open to everyone during the day so recommend you try this even if you’re not staying here!

We were fortunate to be assigned the best room here, it was huge with a wonderful view of the garden. The dinner was a multi course meal and the host took the time to explain each dish to us.

They were also flexible enough to serve our breakfast slightly earlier as we had an early morning train to catch.

Just one thing to note - it's a communal toilet and it's walk down the stairs if you do need to go in the middle of the night.

Otherwise, highly recommend this ryokan.

A traditional ryokan in Tsumago, it wasn’t our first stop on the Nakasendo and set a great tone for the trip. Because of corona many people had canceled so we had the place to ourselves. Mr.Fujioto is an amazing host, very helpful, excellent English and great stories.

Food was so good and he explained everything with interesting and fun stories, same at breakfast, which was very entertaining.

We got an upgraded room which was greatly appreciated, fantastic beds, comfortable and warm, facilities were all clean and had a very traditional feel. Glad we started here and definitely recommend it to anyone.

After a nice hike from Magome to Tsumago, the stay at Fujioto was god send. The owner kindly assigned us the largest room with beautiful garden views. The inn was charming and the meals superb. The owner and his team were incredibly friendly and helpful.

The owner even went out of his way to make arrangements for our luggage transfer when most carriers were busy.

I would definitely recommend this place as the place to stay when visiting Tsumago.

Our stay at Fujioto met our expectations. The inn in well located in the center of town. The property is quaint, with beautiful garden and wood soaking tub. Meals are taken in a dining room, not your room, and the staff is not very keen on accommodating vegetarians. They did customize my daughter’s meals a bit, and she made due without meat or fish since the food was plentiful. We were there during a cold snap: the common spaces were a bit chilly but our room was comfortable.

Very kind staff who made efforts to guide us on our onward journey. Owner made efforts to introduce the facilities and the norms in Japanese baths to us. Beautiful pond on grounds evoke a sense of peace. The exquisite locally sourced Nagano produce was beautifully plated and explained to us. It was a treat to rest after a hard day’s trek to this Ryokan.

This small village Ryokan is the most cosy and cute place with atmosphere and meals that are as good as if you stayed at a Michelin restaurant.
If you do not stay then at least visit for a meal and look around in the old villages.
The family that run the place are fantastic and nice and have been running it for 4. generations and kept the Japanese style.
We were a family of 5 and we all loved it.

From walking in with a welcome that made you feel at home to the traditions of our amazing room. The food prepared by the family and the stunning garden. It was a perfect relaxing experience.

The town was amazing, like stepping back in time. At night the walk was a highlight. The history of the town, the museum and other stores just build on the reasons to go to Magome.

This place easily exceeded my expectations. I came across this place on short notice in the Lonely Planet, and they were able to accomodate me as a walk in. I was in awe of how beautiful the place was: the surrounding gardens, the indoors just gave a warming ambience. I really liked the dinner/breakfast provided! Being of Japanese decent, & having visited Japan a few times before, the dinner is likely the most memorable/delicious I've ever had! And on top of that, the place all over, including the toilet rooms were immaculate: you could eat off the floors! Including the family baths, I was very impressed!
