The Parador de Cardona is a large ninth century castle perched on a steep hill overlooking the town and salt mine of Cardona. To the north are the Serra del Cadi, Andorra and the eastern Pyrenees. Finding reception is difficult but I suppose medieval castles tend not to advertise how to gain entry. It would have helpful to have had instructions include in the booking process. You can risk getting your car stuck at the top, or park in the large car park by the toilets and walk up the steep ramp - follow the sign for the restaurant. Having been astounded by the appearance of the castle, getting into the castle itself with one’s luggage is a less pleasant experience. The site and the architecture are memorable and the area includes an exceptionally handsome medieval church. The hotel’s interior walls are covered with paintings and engravings. The furnishings are extensive with many antique chests. Other interesting features include the ceiling in the dining room and the restored cloister. The bedrooms themselves are large though storage space for clothes was less than we would have liked. There were no facilities in the bedroom for making hot drinks – I would have thought that was a four star category requirement. The hot breakfast was cold and the coffee machine in the dining room produced only warm coffee – not the standard I expect of a four star parador. Adjacent to the town of Cardona is a salt mine which is definitely worth a visit. Twenty kilometres north is Solsona with a cathedral and an excellent diocesan museum – look out for the trepanned skulls. In summary, a mixed view I suppose. We felt a bit disappointed. Fantastic to stay in a castle, but lacking the attentive service expected of a hotel.…
Lovely location and nice village. The staff were all wonderful, being polite, helpful and efficient. Restaurant good as well. The steep walk to town is healthy (!) but worth it. Certainly will return.
Out of date and prison like. For a hilltop setting you would expect VIEWS. The constant school trips were a distraction. The bar was like an old age pension cafeteria - please change the furniture. The restaurant was expensive and we cancelled, having found better value and fun in the town below. The rooms were spacious and well fitted though also out-of-date. We could hear noise from other rooms. All in all, too expensive for what it offered. Nice antiques in the corridors. Just all in all not romantic
It felt like we were staying in a luxurious hilltop castle. We had room 704 which had a 4 poster bed, amazing views over the town from the bedroom and views over the countryside from the bathroom. It was simply stunning. We had the ‘Valentine Special’ so on arrival had Cava and strawberries waiting for us in our room.
Stay in an historic castle and there is the medieval village to explore. Also the salt mine is well worth a visit. Allow an hour for the tour. Not suitable for disabled people and pushchairs are not allowed, so no babies either.
