We truly were happy with our stay, but there were oddities for you to be aware of: 1) The guest quarters are below ground. The Incandescent lighting was excellent but there is only a small skylight to connect you with the outdoors. 2) The bathroom is open to the bedroom with a cloth curtain to afford privacy. 3) The shower glass is squeaky clean and both my friend and I walked into it during the night. I had a lump and bruise but no concusion☺️. 4)There is a great room area and group refrig, plus dishware, glasses and silverware so you can have a snack or a cold meal. This was wonderful to have.
The beds were comfy and the rooms meticulously clean. There is heat and air conditioning as needed. The rooms are all the same except for the accent colors and wall flora paintings. Very sleek and modern with stone and natural wood floors; simple, gorgeous wood furniture and contemporary bathroom fixtures.
You can get your laundry done by the housekeeper for $€10. Neatly folded and returned to you room.m
Typical European breakfast. After three mornings we were tired of the same serving of meats, one cheese, toast and a small selection of fresh fruit.
Unfortunately their gourmet restaurant was closed while we were there. Beautiful dining area with lots of bottles of wine for decor.
Lovely, quiet area around the hotel. Wonderful herb garden plus a table and chairs under a persimmon tree where we had lunch (meats, cheeses and bread bought at local markets) and played bridge.
The rooms don’t have a tv - we didn’t need it, but just in case it’s important to you, keep this in mind.

The continental breakfast was delicious, and the surrounding area was very beautiful, we went on several walks around the vineyards and through the local village, Slap.
We hired a car from Ljubljana’s (tiny) airport, we drove first to Ljubljana and stayed a night and then we drove out to the Vipava valley. It is just an hour or so’s drive, the roads are really good, road signs are good; the only issue for us was a biblical storm and the heaviest rains we have ever driven through! We found Slap and Majerija restaurant & guest house without any difficulty at all. Any plans for having a walk in the local area were ruined by the rain, but we noticed the surrounding countryside was really beautiful and we were happy to relax in our room instead.
We were able to arrange for 2 extra beds for our children in our room and the arrangement was fine - not a lot of floor space but everyone was comfortable (we travelled with small bags). The underground guest rooms are nicely decorated (in a simple style), with comfortable beds. Everything feels good quality.
We had a fabulous meal in the evening. My husband and I had many courses, our children had fewer, but I am not sure we could have had better, more thoughtful and considerate service.
We enjoyed the wines chosen to go with our dishes and these were all excellent. Bravo for Vipava wines!
It was clear that Majerija wants to showcase local dishes and recipes, with local seasonal ingredients. We went the next day to Hisa Franko where the food was more ‘chefy’ and more like the offer in a famous or Michelin recognised restaurant in the UK or elsewhere, but I think I would return to Majerija before I returned to Hisa Franko - for the wonderfully warm welcoming surroundings and service, the delicious food and wine. (And better value)
After a great night’s sleep, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast the next day. My husband cannot eat wheat and they provided very nice gluten free bread, along with different meats, cheese, boiled eggs, salad, yoghurt and several unusual and delicious homemade jams.
I hope to return and I hope to find it just as we did on this visit.
We needed a place to stay in the Vipava valley. Came across this place on booking.com.
Arrived mid afternoon on a Sunday just missing the lunch service.
Next time I will make sure we have lunch or dinner.
You stay under the herb patch. Its was August when we were there and the coolness of being underground was worth it when it is 30 degrees up top. The rooms are spacious and very clean. Nestled amongst the vineyards.
Vipava village is across the valley and there is a winery just 2 minutes away. (Na Hribu,Slap 93)
If you are looking for a very unique place to stay in the Vipava valley then this is it.

This is not yet another tourist trap. Tourists are placed where they belong - somewhere off the facade ... My dream is to return with a carbon bike and cycle in the radius of 100 km with this place being my starting and restoring point. It is so perfect. Plenty of hiking and wine tasting options in the area. This (resembles and) is better than Tuscany. Promise. If not, you can write me hate emails for the rest of my life. Or even longer.
Local products can be purchased, some of it neatly packed in jars. Delish.

Parking is excellent and close to the accommodation. Check in was straight forward.

Vipava Valley is chock-a-block full of charming, centuries old, family run vineyards that you mostly have to schedule appointments in advance. Likewise, there are only a few restaurants (or hotels) with narrow winding roads and you are better off spending the night at a place you will be spending a few hours at feasting and drinking.
We arrived mid-afternoon, chose the "chive room" for our accommodation that night and proceeded to go for a two hour walk behind the hotel, past the llamas, through vineyards, just wandering on the tractor roads. This offers a great view of how the Vipava Valley works, the mountains on the north protect it from colder winds and the ones from the south, from getting too hot. Terraces of grapes zigged zagged around the countryside and at one point we saw some huge mansion or facility (very unusual) way up on the hill.....postcard perfect!
The dinner was exquisite, lovingly prepared, delicious and paired with wines you will never find in the the States.
The whole place is designed in a minimalistic manner, with modern and traditional intertwining. Apart from the only window being on the ceiling, you don't really have a feeling that you are under the ground. This is both good (no claustrophobic feeling) and not so good (there is no wow-factor and a feeling of spending the night in an unusual location).
The comfort in the rooms is minimal. While you get everything that you need, there is no cupboard, no minibar, no TV. Frankly, we didn't miss any of these. However, there were two issues which made the place not so nice for us. First, the heating is not functioning very well. It is done by the air conditioning which then stays on throughout the nigth. The fan is not loud, but not quiet neither. It is also not very efficient, so small electric fan heaters are provided. With them, the temperature is OK, but I wouldn't expect such auxiliary measures to be required in a 100 EUR/night room.
The second flaw was significantly bigger. Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer the sounds and smells of the bathroom and toiled to be confined to a closed place. The designers of Majerija went further from the glass wall in some modern hotels - in order to save space, they only separated the bed and the toilet/bathroom by a curtain.
Bed quality was OK, but the double room only means two single beds held together by a wooden piece, so basically you have twin rooms and the hole between them.
An acceptable place if you don't want to drive after the dinner at Majerija, but nothing more.
