Detailed Reviews
Beautiful camp with nice rooms. The food is amazing as well and everything is perfectly organized.
The beach break infront of the camp is a good spot for beginners with no rocks and shallow water.
The surf lessons are the best! The guides are constantly in the water with you, providing constant assistance and advice.
The admosphere in general is very chill and everyone is super friendly.

Clean rooms, great staff, family atmosphere, good food. Not the cheapest place but definitely worth every penny.
We stayed here for a week, took surfing lessons and really progressed. Breakfasts were really tasty. And between surfing sessions one can chill at the beach or by the swimming pool.
Really recommend this place!

We really enjoyed our stay at the brownsugar surfcamp. Especially for dog owners it is very convenient. The place is surrounded by fences. So your dog will be safe inside. While you go surfing, your dog can stay in the camp. The staff is dogfriendly and will keep an eye on your best friend. So if you look for some relaxing days for you and your dog with surfing empty waves, the brownsugar surfcamp is your place!

This is the place when you like to learn surfing, i did. When i was planning this trip to Bali i was dreaming about a tranquil place at the ocean where i can focus on learning how to surf without wasting too much time in the car each day on the way to the beach. And this place topped my expectations, its like an oasis plotted in ricefields with their own beach in front.
They make it comfortable from the start, its so nice to be welcomed with a namesign at the busy airport on a tropical island where you not yet been before. The drive goes along the scenic coast of west bali through countless ricefields.
After arrival i found myself surrounded by a tropical garden with numerous butterflies flying around palms and flowers. My personal surfcoach was Soleh showed me my room in a beautiful arranged authentic bungalow with lots of carved coconut wood, towel on the comfy bed and my name already on the laundrybag made me even more welcomed. Each room has its own bathroom with shower and toilet, clean and well maintained. They clean the room on a daily base and breakfast is also provided in the lovely restaurant at the front facing the ocean.
Supposed to stay one week i extended for two more as surfing the waves really got me and i enjoyed to be able to just grab the board and jump into the ocean on a daily routine. This place felt better than home. In the first week Soleh showed me the basics how to paddle and stand up correctly and from the second week on i was even able to make my first turns in the green waves. Thanks to the ever smiling surfguides and the great waves in the front now i am truly addicted to surfing and cant wait to be back.
Overall the surfguide made me feel safe in the water and especially the duck dive training in their pool was improving my skills to get faster out to the sea. The weekly videoanalysis helped a lot to see your individual mistakes and to do it right the next session, the guides seems to have a lot of experience as they always give good solutions to each surfer wether beginner or more advanced.
Although if i have to change one thing than it would be their english skills, they spaek a fair but not the best english.
What more can i say, you definetely have to try the chefs (Ibu Made) papaya pancake its by far the best way to start the day after a morningsurf. Thanks to Agus, Dan and Soleh to make my stay so wonderful.

well where should i start, make your own optionen about that facts:
-skatepark : NOT existing and no space to build it one day
- King size bed: NOT existing (less than 1.4m)
- Free coffee and tea: NOT existing
- private Villa: NOT existing- seperated into two small normal rooms
- Pay for everything extra like tours on sunday and very expensive (550.000 Rupiah)
- you pay twice a week for food and drinks. check the bill in detail - very often not correct and things on it which you never had
- private surf guiding: good but too less guides so the normal group has no guide or they are going to different times-not regarding the swell
- they punish you to go into the water when it rains - do NOT do that ( all [--] stuff is going in the sea directly near the camp, you will get hard bali belly with strong bacteria!!! - and the Camp will not care about that !!!)
- guides on the web page: normally not existing
-Take a flyswatter with you- huge problem esp by eating
- optional massage held on totally molded mattress and no privacy (other guests could see you naked)
- warm water only in the villas, nearly no water for the shower (really you will not get shampoo or Sand Out of your hair and it smells like a dead animal!!!)
- light in the rooms too dark- can t see nearly anything at daytime, do not ask about nighttimes
- max 20 guests, very often overbooked so not all guests can stay in the camp
- boring during the sessions or on rainy days- could only play Billard or cards or drink - no restaurants shop etc around
- they plan expansive parties- you have to pay for them even though you would not attend
- too less cars so not everybody can drive to the surf spots (walk half an hour with your board after a session...)
- very often unfriendly management, telling you to organize things like trips and do nothing. on top of it they say you are responsible for the failure and misorganization !!
- weather: nearly every day cloudy in dry seasion. locals said in that area - directly at the beach - it is very often like that cause of the hills ( and in fact driving 4 minutes with the motorbike there is the sun !! and if you look around the locals have no house there -they know why ) - so in fact your clothes will always be wet and smelling - yes you can give them to the laundry but it is expensive for Indonesia
- Spots : only 4 spots they are going to, boring after one week-2 of them often not surfable
- only good thing- good guides (but not for total beginners !!)
finally: sorry NO recommondation AT ALL

Response from BrownSugarMGMT, General Manager at Brown Sugar Surf Camp
Responded 9 Jan 2013
Dear Surfergirl-2, thank you for taking your time to improve our service to our guests. Although we not agree with all of your points we are sure it helped us to provide an even better service to our valuable guests. First of all we wonder why you not talk with us at all during your stay so we could already answer your questions and "facts" to make also your stay even more enjoyable. So best we start in order with your so called "facts": >the skatepark : NOT existing and no space to build it one day< _the skatepark is on overhault until april this year (start of dryseason) and its not stated in the confirmation as an included service, nor its bookable through the web. >king size bed: NOT existing (less than 1.4m) _we have singlebeds, queensize beds and kingsized beds< _next to our doublerooms with singlebeds/twins (100cm wide) we also have doublebeds (with 140cm) and queensize (150cm), it depends if you book a deluxe or standardroom, single or doublebed. >free coffee and tea: NOT existing < _we never advertise free coffee or tea, please let us know where you got that wrong information. >private Villa: NOT existing< _our private villa is located in its own secret garden, maybe thats why you haven´t seen it. It provides that certain privacy that some of our guests looking for. And yes the villa has got two AC bedrooms, two ensuite open-air bathrooms with hotwater showers and an open livingroom with TV/DVD, iPod dock etc. >pay for everything extra like tours on sunday and very expensive (550.000 Rupiah)< _if you book the included services are listed in your confirmation and on the web. Included are the airporttransfers, accommodation, daily breakfast, wifi internet, 11 weekly surfsessions, weekly Citytrip, saturday beach BBQ etc. The surfing classes take place from monday-saturday (11 surfsessions per week) and on sundays we offer to our guests to have a driver for culture trips like waterfalls, hot springs, temples, snorkeling etc. The price per car, driver and petrol incl. is 550.000rp. Per car 5-6 people can join, so if 5 surfer want to go exploring the rich culture of Bali a little bit further of course they share the price and will pay 110.000rp/person for a full day, that is less than 10Euro and yes thats an extra as we only offer these trips if guests want to do them. And of course our guests know the price ahead of the trip they choose. >you pay twice a week for food and drinks. check the bill in detail - not correct and things on it which you never had< _instead of paying for every little snack we collect each bill and the guest can pay them more conveniently twice a week, you can still pay after each meal or drink if you like. We always provide you with the originals of your bill and ask you also to check it. We apologise if your restaurant bill was one of the few that contained a mistake, thats quiet rare. So thank you for that we will work even more hard to distinguish even the slightest mistake. Again it would be much better if you asked us on the spot if you find something on your bill rather than wait. >private surf guiding: good but too less guides so the normal group has no guide or they are going to different times-not regarding the swell< _Thank you that you liked our private one to one surfcoaching. Be assure that we always accompany our guests while surfing. Our experienced surfguides always check the swell and surfconditions before each surfsession, most of them are born in Bali so they know where to go and also at what time. Our surfclasses and surfgroups will always go out with at least one mostly more than one surfteacher. Safety is our number one. You mentioned the private surfcoaching and yes these lessons are on a individual surfschedule rather than follow the groups as these private teaching are custom tailored to the need of the individual guest: some guest like to sleep a bit longer or only like to surf early mornings etc. >they punish you to go into the water when it rains - do NOT do that ( all [--] stuff is going in the sea directly near the camp, you will get hard bali belly with strong bacteria!!! - and the Camp will not care about that !!!) < _one moment, we never punished anybody to go into the water if there is a risk of health involved e.g.. too big wave etc. Firstly there is a difference of rain and thunder storms. A rainshower often helps the wave to become more smooth (we call it glassy) and most surfers enjoy these glassy conditions. At any thunderstorms we won´t go out with our guests, sorry but safety first. I am surfing the waves of Bali now for more than20years and didn´t had any stomach issues from surfing, you should better keep in mind that most of the tourists who are firstimers get a bali belly from the hot tropic weather which is quiet different from western climate and also from too spicy food which you are not common with. And be assured that we have septic tanks for "that stuff" because we love to surf in clean waves. >optional massage held on totally molded mattress and no privacy (other guests could see you naked)< _our massage hut is well hidden from any spectator by its bamboo fence and its also located in the more hidden part of our garden, about the mold i can assure that the mattress is changed regularly. Once again we highly appreciate it if you would said anything straight away so we could show you on the spot that the "facts" stated becoming fiction >warm water only in the villas, nearly no water for the shower (really you will not get shampoo or Sand Out of your hair and it smells like a dead animal!!!)< _our water get tested regularly and we don´t have any issues with it, the waterpressure in Bali is not the strongest but it is strong enough to enjoy your shower at any time of the day. Please tell straight to our front desk or one of our staff if this occurs maybe it was just an individual problem in your bathroom for a shorttime. We provide warmwater showers in the villas thats true >light in the rooms too dark- can t see nearly anything at daytime, do not ask about nighttimes< _our standardrooms have 3 lights inside and one outside on the veranda. Thank you for the contribution we will put an additional readinglight at each bed and the new bungalows have a glassfront for even more daylight. >max 20 guests, very often overbooked so not all guests can stay in the camp< _every bookinginquiery we check for availability, if we are already fully booked the asking guests cannot stay in the camp that's true, we will not put another bed in a doubleroom just to accommodate 3 persons. If you book a doubleroom for two and we confirm it you will get it. >boring during the sessions or on rainy days- could only play Billard or cards or drink - no restaurants shop etc around< _our surfcamp has a lot to offer during the sessions: beachsoccer, slackline, billard, seaview restaurant, take a swim in the ocean, walks to the near temple on the beach, free wifi internet, skatepark from April 2013, BBQ and chillhuts at the beach, Movies and Surffilms, supermarket and surfshop nearby, free scooter for small trips etc. >they plan expansive parties- you have to pay for them even though you would not attend< _sorry but we never planned any expensive parties: no guest has to pay any entrance whatsoever. If one ore more guest like to have a party then everyone will just pay what they ordered. The surfguides come as talented djs too, for free :) >too less cars so not everybody can drive to the surf spots (walk half an hour with your board after a session...)< _the farest surfspot where we walk together with our surfing guests is a beachbreak 10min. from the camp, all other surfspots are having a free spot shuttle. The furthest distance with the car to a surfspot is Balian with a 30min drive, so we can´t imagine why you walked this distance when we provide a free shuttle with our vans. >very often unfriendly management, telling you to organize things like trips and do nothing. on top of it they say you are responsible for the failure and misorganization !!< >weather: nearly every day cloudy in dry seasion. locals said in that area - directly at the beach - it is very often like that cause of the hills ( and in fact driving 4 minutes with the motorbike there is the sun !! and if you look around the locals have no house there -they know why ) - so in fact your clothes will always be wet and smelling - yes you can give them to the laundry but it is expensive for Indonesia< _it seems you were a bit unlucky with the weather, especially through the sunny dryseason you will enjoy lots of beautiful sunshine in Bali. We are located at the beach and far away from the mountains. And the main showers will occur at the start of the mountains so if there ever is a dark cloud just relax and wait 4 minutes and the wind will bring it to the mountains thats nature. You dont have to drive with the motorbike. In fact clouds are quiet rare and you will enjoy also some natural shadow after a bright sunny day. The reason that there are few houses on the beach is to find in the history of Balis culture: the high mountains where stated "good lands" as in their believes (Bali hinduism) they are nearer to the gods as the ocean where the places where demons where living, so even nowadays most of the Balinese cant swim and are staying away from beaches. After rain your clothes will be wet, yes thats a fact we confirm. Our laundryservice pick your laundry up and bring them on the next day (24hrs service) to your doorstep. >Spots : only 4 spots they are going to, boring after one week-2 of them often not surfable < _Waves are also a gift of nature and our experienced surfguides will bring you to the best beaches with the best conditions on each surfing day. We have 3 surfspots in walking distance and 6 within 30min. driving distance. The furthest we walk is 10minutes, all others we use our vans for a free spottransfer at the beginning and end of each surfsession. Right in front of the camp we have a beachbreak with sandbottom with lots of whitewater which suits beginners best. >only good thing- good guides< _ last but not least you found something you liked. Thank you again for your time and also your compliment on our guides. We will even work more focused to provide the best service to all of our guests wether beginner or intermediate surfer. Although we wish you talked to us during your stay about your topics your contribution is appreciated by our team. surf ahoy from Bali, the Brown Sugar Team

Finally we found a great place to stay the night. After some time trying to find a suitable place for us all to stay the night we found Brown Sugar. It was so welcoming, right on the beautiful surf beach. Black stoney, sandy beach with amazing views from point to point on the beach itself. Delightful resatarurant with traditional foods, for our kids and us adults, looking across the track to the beach, was calming and relaxing after a busy day. Small track into Brown sugar makes it a quiet place to stay. Early morning walk along the beach to nearby river mouth, after watching sun come up over the rice padi, what a way to start the day. Yummy breakfast of fresh fruit juice, nasi goreng, banana pancakes, coffee. Accommodation was great for all of us, including the kids for their first hotel experience. Love to come back again to visit our newly found friends ie. staff.

Hi Again,
I have written this once, but the page or net went down, so I am going to review this again. :)
So, my overall experience was really good, but if you decide to go here expect no luxury whatsoever. This is humble surf camp/hotel with decent people. There is nothing to do in Medevi only surf, that should be your first priority. But you can do (eat) a lots of surf. I did almost five! hours a day and it was amazing.
So where shall I begin?
The accommodation:
It is simple, with two beds, no cold water (you don't really need it anyway, because he water is hot enoght to wash your self, besides you are in the water all day). The rooms are clean, and they change your towel if you ask them. It is pretty basic, but you don't want to spend your time in a room while you are in surfing camp, do you? If you are going with your gf I highly recommend you to get the deluxe room with A/C and hot shower. I liked the whole thing after all.
The food
The food is nice, and fresh. That is the only thing you need. I have not gone out in the village and eat from there, but some did and they were satisfied. They do really delicious juices smoothies and juices.
The coaches:
These little dudes can surf that is for sizz. I took the one on one training, and I learnt a lot, if you nice to them and treat them with respect you can get much more out. The group sessions are good too according to other peeps in the village. However you definitely need a little bit of knowing of surfing, not a lot.
I think it was worth the money for me, but I am a very simple dude, and I try to enjoy every minute of life. I recommend you to go there if you want to have an active rest for a couple of days. Far way from civilization. I have not even touched my cell phone while I was there, and it came out life without facebook is still good. :)))
Anyway, if you are coming from you EU plan at least 10 days, because of the travel and jetleg. If you are coming form Ozz 8 days should do it.
If you need more info, contact me.

Sleeping
The rooms have 2 beds with thick, comfortable mattresses and good mosquito nets in it. There is not much space for putting your baggage, only one small shelf. The bathroom is cold water only, a sink and a mirror and a western toilet. The rooms get cleaned daily, that means they make the bed and swipe the floor, but don't empty the bin in the bathroom or clean the toilet, which was a bit smeally.
If you want to read, bring a headlight, as the rooms are very dark and also the communal area has not good lights. At night, in can be quite noisy, as you hear whatever your nighbour upstairs is doing, or the cat is singing for hours.
People living in the villa told me there sometimes is no hot water, and the rooms are as small as the standard rooms.
Place
The whole place is designed in a very nice way, with flowers and decorations everywhere. The chill out area right at the beach has hammocks and benches to relax. The communal area has nice benches and tables, a dvd player and speakers where you can put your own sound.
The kitchen is great, they serve western and indonesian food, prices are about double as in local warungs. Breakfast is good and filling. You can buy a refillable bottle for 150'000 rupiah and get free water for the whole length of your stay (so you don't have to carry your drinking water into the camp and don't use so much plastic bottles).
The surfcamp is half an hour walk from medewi point (along the beach) where you can find some restaurants. You can rent a scooter at the camp if you don't want to walk.
There is not much to do at night, but as you anyway get up early it doesnt matter. Sometimes they make beach parties, you can participate or not, as you like.
Service
Pick up and drop off: You have to be patient, as sometimes the traffic makes the journy from Medewi to Kuta take as long as 4 hours, when sometimes you can make it in 2 hours. For drop off, make sure where you want to be dropped before you leave the camp, otherwise the driver insists on letting you on the main street where you have to take a taxi to the airport. Once in a week there is a free shuttle to the neares city, be fast to put your name on list as only 7 people fit in the car. Then you have about one hour time to buy something, usually they are in a rush to get back to the camp.
Sunday trips are not included, and the price depends on how many people take part. The trips itself are quite nice, you get to see a lot of Bali.
And no, there is no skate park.
Surf Guiding
Usually, they take you to Medewi at around 6 in the morning, and again in the early afternoon. Because there is no other wave. In my 3-4 weeks stay, I only surfed Medewi, the wave just next to Medewi, and the beachbrake in front of the camp. If conditions are bad (too big or too small), there is no other place to go and it gets really boring.
The camp is good for first-time surfers as they have the nice beach just in front, or for more experienced surfers who can compete with the locals and many good australians in the medewi outside. For intermediates, it's only medewi inside which isn't that fun.
Be sure to bring booties, as there are sea urchins hiding in Medewis rocks, and bring your own wax, even if you rent a board you don't get the wax.
Rental boards are ok, but they had not enough when I was there, so insist on getting the right one for your skills, otherwise you get a far too big or way too short board. They also gave me a leash that was broken and mended again, making it very short so that I constantly had to worry about my board hitting me.
Guides are good surfers, but not good teachers, and their English isn't the best. If you want to improve, keep asking them for tips.
Medewi is crowdes, just as any wave in or near Kuta is. But the beachbrake was empty, which is no wonder, as it ist just a messy beachbrake as any other and people driving to Medewi want to surf the point.
In the afternoon you usually have a strong onshore wind blowing, but this is more or less normal for any place at the sea.
Overall, the Brownsugar surf camp is all right, as it is one of the cheapest camps in Bali. I wouldn't stay longer than 1 week, as it gets quite boring after a while always surfing the same spot.

Dear "N O", thank you for taking your time to improve our service to our guests. Nice to hear that you liked our mattresses, we also provide high quality beds in the basicrooms one of which you booked. If you like to have hotwater shower or AC we suggest to book one of the deluxerooms which provide you with both services. All rooms get cleaned on a daily basis which includes the dustbin and of course the toilet aswell. Thank you for the info about that, although we would appreciate it also while you staying with us to provide you straight with our daily services. The deluxerooms are equipped with hotwater showers 24hrs I can assure you. Great that you like our oceanview restaurant with its mixture of indonational food! Our kitchen is keen to please both tastebuds the wester as the asian one, how about the choice of 5 different pastanoodles. We have daily transfers mon-sat to Medewi in our AC van which take 5min. if you like to walk its a 15-20min beachwalk. The first surfsession depends on the tide and 6o´clock is the earliest we go, so the first session will be around 6-10am, not always 6. We have several Beach, Point and Semi-Reefbreaks around the camp and always decide on a daily manner which wave serves the skil of the group best. The Medewi Pointbreak is the most consistant wave and has two different section like you outlined, which handles up headhigh swell and is suitable for both intermediate and experts. If Medewi is not working we will also go to one of the many other spots around (Balian, Truckstop, Irons Left and Right etc.), depending on the waveconditions and of course the surfskills of the group. Each guest who rent our surfmaterial is granted one bar of wax free of charge, we also have booties and wax on stock in the camp. The skate park is on overhaul thats right and will be open for concretesurfing in 2013. Thanks again for your contribution to serve our guests with even a better kind of service in the future. The Brown Sugar Team

I have been staying at Brown sugar for one week and have stayed for in several other surf camps on bali before. Below my evaluation:
+ good value for money
+ great location directly at the beach and close to Medewi surf spot
+ feels like family as it is asmall camp for approx 20 people (mostly Germans)
+ very friendly and motivated guides
+ very friendly staff
+ good food
+ very thorough video analysis
o basic but cozy and clean accommodation
o reasonable selection of alternative spots if medewi is not working
- groups often went to the same spot, so it became usually crowded even though there were not many other surfers otherwise
- limited restaurants in walking distance

Two adults and a 7-yr-old stayed two nites in Oct 2016. Nice location on black sand beach, albeit isolated (you need a motorbike or taxi to go anywhere). Friendly/helpful staff, ok restaurant and pool. A/C room small; bathroom&shower were bigger. No tv, no fridge, wifi sign-in ridiculous w/ illegible small scraps of paper needing constant replacement. But... this is a surf place & surf school and other guests seemed quite happy. If good surf and a surfer's mentality are your style, then Brown Sugar is probably for you.
