We absolutely loved our stay at this beautiful property. It was very secure with security guards around the property at all hours. We would see them walking past our window surveying the area. It’s waterfront but is set back from the beach. We stayed in the building that is next to the beach and woke up to the sight of the beach and water every morning. It has two swimming pools… one is next to the property’s cafe and the other was an infinity pool next to our building. There is a local cafe serving Dominican and other various food while also being a poolside bar. The food was delicious. We were only 3 miles from major towns to visit in each direction. It’s next to Cabarete on the East side and Sosua on the West side. The apartment was spacious with large bedrooms and living areas. Plenty of hot water and good water pressure. We definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Sosua if you have a chance to book a rental here.

Just got back from Dominican Republic, staying in a three bedroom 2 bath 3rd floor condo in the old building and the unti was immaculate and the is amazing with a full ocean view. Sure there are some potholes in the road leading to the place but they can't control that. Its perfectly situated in the best North Coast town of Sosua and a super market and the great Sosua beach very close by. Also Cabarete nearby. Highly recommend - book through Calisto Property Management. A+ all the way....

This was our third visit to Grand Laguna Beach and our best trip yet. Previously we stayed in the main building before the beautiful new buildings had been built. This time we stayed in the villa with 3 other couples and had our own private pool and barbecue. The pool was clean and the space fantastic for 4 couples.
We were really impressed with the new buildings and infinity pool and we hope to stay there on our next visit.
As always at Grand Laguna Beach, the staff made us feel right at home and took excellent care of us. If we needed to make a booking or were looking for a recommendation for a restaurant they are always helpful. If we needed anything for our room it was delivered as promised.
The food at the Grotto Bar was even better that our visit 3 years ago - fabulous menu and nice staff. They now also have live music every Friday evening and occasionally other nights. We had the pleasure of hearing both Greg Godovitch and Amy Bishop playing while we were there.
A cab was always available for trips to the store or into Cabarete and Sosua.
As always, owner Tim Neeb is a gracious host and makes this a wonderful place to stay!

Hello David W, It is so nice to hear that your Grand Laguna Vacations just keep getting better! We bet that your next stay in Grand Laguna Beach: Phase Two will set the bar even higher! Thank you for mentioning the new food and music at the Grotto! We have a new chef and the rotating menu and seating has expanded greatly. We love live music here at Grand Laguna and are always open to hosting new performers. We are glad you enjoyed live music from Canadian rock legend Greg Goddo and the up-and-coming star Amy Bishop, who was recently featured on the hit show "The Launch." Live music is a great way to bring together the guests and owners of Grand Laguna Beach, which always results in a good time! Thanks for the great review! We hope to see you again soon!

I will advise anyone to never book at this hotel. This hotel participates in the classical bate and switch model. There are 2 buildings, Phase I and Phase II. Phase ll is the newer building with the nice amenities, and the ones that they show in the advertisement. Phase l is the older building with the old furniture, leaking air conditioner, closets full of debris/stuff and the broken elevator. When you select a room, you ae basing it off the photographs you see, but when you get there they tell you that you "selected" the other building and their is no occupancy in the building you reserved. You are not given the option of paying upon arrival, (unless they changed it) so you pay in advance via credit card. Then once you arrive and see that you have been duped into paying for accommodations less than anticipated, they will refuse to refund your money and you are stuck with either staying somewhere else or settle for the old, crappy accommodations.

I'm sad to say the hotel my wife, kids, and I dreamed about for a year did look or feel like any sort of a 4-star hotel at which I have every stayed; total bummer!

Based on my experience, I unfortunately would not recommend that my friends and family stay here for vacationing purposes, unless they were just poking for a place to sleep and were unable to get someplace else.

Positives:
• Beds weren't bad; nothing to write home about, but comfortable enough.
• Pool nice to look at (but it was cold so kids never wanted to swim in it).
• Fridge & stove let you cook your own food.
• Grocery nearby.
• Located in between Cabarete and Puerto Plata.
• Receptionist knows how to speak fluent English.

Negatives:
• Beach sand here is like quicksand, and the waves are too big; not good for swimming.
• Booked well in advance, yet room was not fully prepped upon our arrival.
• Family "welcomed" to the property by a guard tower, and a man with a rifle.
• Furniture was uncomfortable; basic wicker stuff.
• Hotel refuses to call any taxi except their own, and it is expensive compared to town.
• Kids got yelled at by the "manager" for "wasting electricity". Give me a break.
• Same creepy "manager" sits by the pool smoking all day or chatting up the bartender.
• Taxi often 30-60 minutes late, and even longer at dinner time.

TIP #1: If you decide to stay here, go the public beaches in Caberete or Puerto Plata; they are much better for swimming, and folks offer to bring you drinks and food, if you are just relaxing.

TIP #2: Bring your own cellphone with an international plan to avoid the hotel's taxi "filter"; this will allow you to call your own cabs and save you a lot of money. If you do take the hotel's taxi to town, pay them only to take you to town, as you can get a cheaper cab back from the taxi stands in both Caberete and Puerto Plata.

Response from GLBRDR, Owner at Grand Laguna Beach
Responded 31 Oct 2014
Hello OneBeachGuy, Thank you for your review. Great tag name! As the owner and developer of GLB, I have put my heart into our boutique hotel. I believe that when someone trusts us with their vacation time and vacation dollars that we have to make it the very best experience possible. I believe that we have an exceptional affordable luxury condo hotel, but what makes it best is the quality and caring of our amazing staff, including Pia our hotel manager and Orly our condo manager. Both ladies are very proficient in English and will go out of their way to help our guests. We have tried to determine which condo you stayed in last January, but with the information from your review, we are unable to match you to any of our condos. We have written you through the email address we have from trip advisor to further try and understand the negatives of your experience, as your review is written nine months after your stay with us. Since we have not heard from you, I will comment here on a couple of things as someone with 15 years experience in the Dominican Republic. Most of our guests really enjoy our beach, they enjoy the peacefulness and privacy that they experience there along with the ability to have food and drinks delivered from our grotto bar and grill. As you mentioned, Grand Laguna is in the middle of a number of other beaches, including Cabarete beach, Sosua Beach and Playa Alicia. Reading your review regarding beaches and taxis though, I think that you have confused the town of Sosua with the City of Puerto Plata. On the topic of taxis, we thoroughly care about our guests and recommend one company as it is by far the least expensive and provides a modern, insured van with an English speaking driver, Oliver. Many of our reviewers on trip advisor have commented on the great service that they received from him. We have negotiated the lowest prices in the area for our guests for these services, $8.00 into Sosua and $12.00 into Cabarete, as well as $25.00 to the airport. Oliver and the taxi company are completely independent from us, but we feel giving our guests the best services in the area and that is why we recommend him. There are many other taxi services and modes of travel in the area as well. Since April, telephone service is available in all our condos. It is a VOIP service that provides for long distance calling to North America and has a local Toronto number as well as Dominican number to receive calls. There is a small fee for these phones which provide unlimited no charge long distance calling. We also have other options for telephone service for our guests including inexpensive cell phone service. It is not always easy to strike a balance between all guests as to the temperature of the pool. Most of our guests prefer the salt water pool be a little cooler to enjoy on the hot days and our pool is well used by people of all ages. Our furniture is a mix of hardwood and wicker to provide a Caribbean flair. It is made in a quality local factory however none of the furniture is cheap. We were not happy with the quality and changed the furniture in four condos last March. I do not know if one of those is the condo you were staying in. Lastly, my wife and I live at Grand Laguna Beach and try to meet many of our guests. If there is ever any problems that we hear about, I can assure you that we will do everything in our power to correct the problem. I wish that you had taken your concerns to our office or to me. I deeply apologize that you did not have the experience that you were hoping for.

I spent Christmas at this so called resort. When we arrived the room seemed ok. There was a armed guard walking around with a shotgun. There was no hot water in our condo. The pool and hot tub was cold. they said they were near the beach, well that all depends. I is a half mile walk down a path to the beach and the beach and path is littered with garbage. If you want to go to town or the food store, it is a $30. to $40. dollar cab ride there. The owner and his rep. could care less if you are comfortable, the have there own little group to hang with, and there are dogs running all over the place, and barking. We also had to keep asking for clean towels, and beach towels. Over all I don't think I will ever go back to this place.

Response from GLBRDR, Manager at Grand Laguna Beach
Responded 9 Jan 2014
We are very sorry to hear that you were unhappy with your stay at Grand Laguna Beach. We try our best to keep all our guests completely satisfied, and it is very disheartening to learn that you were unhappy during your holiday stay with us.   All of our condos always have lots of hot water, but the taps can be confusing to some. We checked the condo you stayed in to make sure and the hot water is working fine. To improve our service, in the future we will go to greater lengths to ensure that all our guests are walked through all details of the condos upon checking in. The pool is not overly heated as it is supposed to be refreshing in the tropical climate. It is very hard to tailor a public pool to all our guests needs, but we try our best.   While the beach is far less than a half mile from our Hotel, we understand that it can feel further than it is on a hot day. The space you are referring to between us and the beach is owned by us and will be part of "phase 2". Next year there will be more condos, a pool and restaurant occupying this space. We sincerely apologize for any garbage found on our path. It is cleaned daily.  Maintenance should not have allowed that and we will go to great lengths to ensure it doesn't happen again.   We do not label ourselves as a resort. We are a Condo / Hotel that is a very personal and pet friendly environment. We try and differentiate our selves as much as possible from the typical all-inclusive resort. We offer a home away from home, with a full kitchen and access to all of the best establishments in the area for groceries, restaurants who deliver, and attractions. It is a taste of the country and culture.  However we understand that what we offer is not for everyone, and some people do prefer all inclusive resorts.  We will be sure to advertise our differences more prominently in the future.   I am sorry to hear about the taxi prices you were paying. Taxi service through our office ensures fully insured english speaking drivers with new modern vans. It should never cost more than $15 to get a ride in to Cabarete  and $10 into Sosua. We also offer a free shuttle in and out of town once a day, every day.    The owner goes to unprecedented lengths to assure all of our guests needs are tended to. He is very hurt by your suggestions that he did not care about your comfort. Part of the problem may be that he was also here with his family for the holidays and that we were fully booked the entire time. Our helpful staff are available 12 hours a day in our office tending to any problems or needs. If they knew you were having troubles with your water or other issues, they would have been resolved within moments. Every one of our guests at Grand Laguna Beach is very important to us, and we are very sorry that you were disappointed with your stay.

After 3 family vacations at Grand Laguna Beach, this year we decided on a long term stay, and still loving it! It's really great to get off the main road and into the Playa Laguna oceanfront community, with its own quiet and quaint little village feel. The naturally preserved walkway from the hotel to the ocean is breathtaking, one of my personal favorites along with my oceanfront walk every morning. Only a 5 min ride into Sosua or 10 min ride into Cabarete to enjoy a day at the bigger popular beaches... and a few Mojito's :) The staff are amazing and more accommodating than you would ever expect. I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting more than just the ordinary, it has a unique friendly atmosphere that makes us feel like we were part of a huge family. Thanks Grand Laguna Beach for always being great hosts during our stay in the DR :) All the best on your April 1st grand opening of Phase 2.

Hello cosyplus5, we are so grateful to have you keep coming back! All of your praise means everything to us. We work incredibly hard to make Grand Laguna Beach, as you say, “more than just the ordinary” with a “unique friendly atmosphere” that makes you feel like you “are part of a huge family.” Your words capture our goal exactly and we are incredibly proud to read them in a guest review. Just wait until you see Grand Laguna Beach now that Phase Two is complete! We have a beautiful beachfront condo waiting for you next time! Thanks again for one of our favourite reviews yet!

I should preface this by saying that I do not usually write reviews but I feel like it might actually help some folks this time. I should also note that trip advisor does not allow zero star reviews.

Unfortunately, we were unaware of the construction that would be taking place during our stay. A new hotel is being built next to the villa we are in. The construction site has a dozen hammers and a few saws running all day. In both the villa and the hotel, the sounds of hammers, generators and tradesmen are very apparent 7am-6pm. The volume is enough to interrupt and occasionally prevent conversation, even within the rooms of the building.

We arrived on a Monday and will depart on a Sunday, I hope that the construction crew will take some time off this week/weekend. It should be noted that the noise is substantially reduced during their lunchtime at midday.

If you are planning a trip here, someone mentioned that they expect to have construction completed by the end of the year. You should absolutely wait until then--but heads up, the new buildings will block the ocean view.

I hope that, aside from a diligent trip advisor response from management, vacationers will read this review and book at a different time or another location.

I cannot stress how important it is to not book here while construction is underway.

Responded 19 Mar 2016
Hello OntGC We are incredibly sorry that you were not properly informed of the construction. That is completely unacceptable, and I assure you that I will personally make sure this mistake is never repeated. I spoke with the person who took your reservation and I understand that they have communicated directly with you and apologized for this major oversight. I have been very concerned about how to complete the next phase of Grand Laguna Beach in a timely manner for our owners along with how to keep our guests completely satisfied. To help meet the needs of our guests we offer a convenient free return shuttle into both Cabarete and Sosua five days a week. We also provide a discount on the rentals during construction. Again, I am very sorry that you were not properly informed of the construction. That is a surprise no one should have on vacation. Please note that we have gotten to the bottom of this and ensure that this mistake is never repeated. Our goal has always been to provide the best possible experience for our guests and owners, and to have let a guest down so completely is unacceptable. We are incredibly excited for the completion of Grand Laguna Beach: Phase Two, featuring 24 brand new ocean view and beachfront condos, an infinity pool overlooking the ocean, a large beachfront roof top spa common area, and a planned beachfront restaurant. As you can probably tell, I am completely passionate about Grand Laguna Beach, so when a guest is let down I take it very personally. Again, we are all very sorry you were not properly informed of the construction across the street. Thank you for taking the time to submit a review. We hope to get the opportunity to make this up to you next year when Phase Two is complete.

My wife & I are not world travelers and do not need or want those $5,000 a night waste of places. We never were in the DR, so we tried it out for our short 4 day stay. We picked (over many) the Grand Laguna Beach, mainly for our trip package. The pictures seemed okay. However, we were so surprised that, when we came up to our room, we thought they made a mistake on our reservation. We saw a gorgeous updated kitchen, a Island to sit around with stools.full of glasses, dishes, toaster, stove, fridge(silver & new), marble counters and more. Than in the living-room, a nice big Television, chairs, coffee table and a couch. Than a porch with a table and chairs. The main Bedroom was huge, with a small porch, a closet so big, it can hold all your cloths for weeks. The Bathroom was beautiful. Marble counter, toilet and a marble titled shower that's very large. It also has a rain shower head and a hand held shower head. Now in the back on the other side was another bedroom with large closets and another bathroom, like the first one. Smart designer, since the second bathroom has 2 doors, it can be used a second bathroom or a personal one for the people in the second bedroom. I must tell you, the staff of: Oral, Gigi and William, along with the owners Tim & Teri, only add to the beauty and enjoyment of this place and stay. Nothing was to much trouble for them. They enjoyed helping with whatever we needed. I am not good on computers and always needed help logging on. Well William is great and he says "NO PROBLEM" let me help you. Orla & Gigi, smile and just are there to help you. We had a great time going Dun Bugging, Tim and Orla got us a crazy deal and a great knowledgeable tour driver. The pool and beach are okay, while other great beaches are only minutes away. Enjoy your stay.

After staying here, I PROMISE, you'll be ready to book your next vacation before you head home!! I booked this property to celebrate my sisters 30th birthday with a few of our cousins as a girls getaway. We wanted to experience the DR and not just be secluded to all inclusive hotel grounds, as well as still have a nice room to hang around in when we wanted. Boy was that the best choice ever!!! Grand Laguna Beach did not disappoint, because we got that and then some!!!

First of all, let me start by saying that once we checked in that Gigi was very sweet & more than hospitable to start out stay. She told us to let her know if we needed anything and if we had any questions to let her know, & at times when we needed assistance she went above and beyond to help us and to follow up with us. She even gave us a tour of the facility when we asked, and took us to view all of the other suites and penthouses. All of the units that we toured, including ours, were impeccably decorated & cleaned as well as designed. I'm talking about granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, mohogany wood cabinets & even all the utensils that you'd need for cooking and drinking (which we did a lot of by the way)!! We were in complete aww, because initially our plan was to book the penthouse, but due to lots of unexpected friends not making the trip we opted for a smaller 2bdrm condo which was still amazing!
Upon checking in, we also met one of the owners Teri ,& she was really excited and welcomed us as if we were royalty. She knew we were celebrating a 30th bash w the girls so she even invited us up to her penthouse for drinks, & THEN upgraded us for our last night to the PENTHOUSE that we initially wanted to book!!' Now there's no topping that!!

There's a few food places that deliver to the facilities and Teri even made it a point to make sure that they took care of us & even spoke with the owner of one to let him know we were guests at the resort and to make sure our order & food were on point.

We took a day trip and did the time share tour at one of the all inclusive resorts and l must say that even that beach, at one of the top all inclusive resorts, couldn't compare to Grand Laguna's beach that's right there in the front of the facility!! The water at Laguna's beach is nicer & the sand's a better grade as well. We couldn't wait to get back to our condo and enjoy our nicer, private & lavish beach lol.

Grand Laguna is inbetween Sosua and Cabarete making it easy accessible to get to the nightlife or any of the other restaurants you'd like to try out by car. There's a designated cab for the resort that'll take you anywhere you'd like to go, but I suggest renting a car to do as much sight seeing you'd like around the island into the other towns.

All in all, we enjoyed our stay at GLB, & anytime I visit Puerto Plata I look fwd to staying there again. The staff and owners went above to make us feel accommodated, the beach was to die for, the rooms were so nice you could have a staycation in them while on vaca, they're in the perfect mid location & the ocean view is just spectacular. I can't rave about it enough. Try it out for yourself & thank me later.... you won't be disappointed. FYI I'm adding photos and videos to show exactly what I'm taking about.

Hello cwlewis, we look forward to accommodating you this Christmas. While most places are closed Christmas our staff in the front office would be happy to find you the few that are still open. Could you please let me know what site you used to book with us? I am having trouble locating your booking. Sorry for the confusion. Thank you for choosing Grand Laguna Beach!

it is best to fly into POP, Puerto plata airport, as Grand Laguna is only ten minutes away. If you cannot do this, you will need to rent a car, or arrange a taxi to Grand Laguna Beach. it is about a 4 hour drive from Santo Domingo airport. Grand Laguna can arrange a bonded, insured English speaking taxi driver with nice van if you need this.

Does anyone know if the construction has been completed yet? This seems to be a BIG COMPLAINT by others.

5 minutes from Sosua. Not sure of taxi cost as I have my own transportation. No problem bringing guest in but guest has to present a ID card to security. Great place to stay.
