One of the first hotels in Sosua, Tropix is a wonderful alternative to the all-inclusives. Walking distance to the beaches, downtown and shops, but far enough to feel secluded. We're also small enough that groups and families can book all 10 rooms to have their own private hotel - a real treat for many!

We have a home in Sosua, which is currently rented, but we like to go back, check on things but also see friends. Typically we stay outside of town, but this trip booked at Tropix and was very pleased. The rooms were clean and just as described. The property is only a five minute walk from downtown, so easy access to restaurants, bars and shops. What truly separates this establishment from all others though are the staff, from the owner, to the manager to Juan who prepares breakfast. All, could not do enough for us. Being early risers, we were seated by the pool at 6AM to have the owner appear, with a large pot of hot coffee for us.Given the price, location and people, you simply can't go wrong with this place.

Sosua is no longer a tourist destination where people fly in from all
over the world to be locked away in all-inclusive beach resorts. Maybe
it never was. It's a village whose economy is undoubtedly based
on tourism, but it's more individual. A bit crazy even. People will
try to sell you stuff or offer a cab on about any street corner. On some
days more than on others. There are two beaches, one with large green
trees just behind the sand, with Dominican and foreign tourists. A
great supermarket that caters to tourists. Plenty of small
restaurants, bars, including Italian pizza (actually made by Italians)
and menus often written in four languages (Spanish, English, German,
Russian). Everything is affordable. Most things are in walking
distance. If you like it a bit more conventional or just something
else take a cab to neighboring Cabarete for a few bucks.
The Tropix Hotel is a small, but it has everything you need. It's
cheap and clean. Rooms have fan, AC, WLAN and a little fridge, simple
furniture and more than enough room for two people. There is a new TV
room in the main building (which we didn't use). Except for roosters
between four and five it was extremely quiet when we were there. The
pool is nice. It even has a little highly-welcomed shade in the
afternoon.
Tropix's biggest asset might be its staff. They are professional and
personal, always helpful, make excellent Dominican coffee and
breakfast under palm trees. Bring a flashlight. The last 200 feet to
the hotel can be dark at night.

This hotel is really beautiful. I just enjoyed my stay.
The main center of Sosua is just 2 minutes away per feet. Walking to the beach is done in less than 5 minutes.
The hotel itself lies within a garden of flowers and palms. There are only a few small houses, each containing two apartments. In the middle of the hotel there is a nice pool, clean and always refreshing.
The staff is reliable and very friendly. All around the stay was really perfect.

I like smaller hotels where the people are friendly and you can get to know the staff. Tropix Hotel is such a hotel. We traveled there over Christmas break and were looking for a quiet place to enjoy with family. This worked perfectly. The rooms are basic but clean. They circle around a small but deep pool. The patio around the pool has sufficient chairs and tables. This is the place that people sit, relax, read a book, etc. We loved it.

The only negative might be that it is not right on the beach. This may matter more for some but it wasn't a big deal for us. The beach is close enough to walk too.

We did not buy the breakfast but did use the kitchen. The rooms have a/c (didn't use) and a small refrigerator. A large grocery store is 2-3 blocks away, very convenient.

We really liked it. And will be going back!

My girlfriend and I were initially attracted to Hotel Tropix based on the price -- $40 a night is hard to beat, even in DR. When we arrived, we were immediately greeted by Meemes, who runs the place. She was so accommodating and helpful getting us set up in our room and later getting transportation and recommending restaurants. The room was more than enough for two people; queen bed, couch, bathroom, and fridge. There's a pool in the courtyard that gives the place some nice ambiance. Although on the other side of Route 5 from the beach, it only took 5-10 minutes to walk to two beaches in the area. There's also a bunch of restaurants and a supermarket even closer.

Both mornings we had breakfast at the hotel. Juan makes it for you right then and there and it was delicious. I highly recommend his pancakes. We would definitely stay here again. If you're visiting Sosua on a budget, consider Hotel Tropix.

Our group of 11 stayed at Tropix for a week and everyone loved it! The rooms are large and airy, the breakfast is fantastic and inexpensive, and sitting by the pool is soooo relaxing. The hotel is tucked away in a quiet spot, but at the same time just a few blocks walk to everything you need. Cori and Jess were awesome hosts and I can't say enough to recommend this hotel!

We spent 2 weeks in this lovely hotel. It is only 300m away from the center of Sosua. The staff is very friendly and the rooms are very clean. Due to its size of only 10 rooms it is also very quit and you can relax easily. Also you feel very secure which is not always given in Sosua. Their “no houseguest rule” which refers to the prostitutes is also a big plus. Carl, the manager will welcome you with great tips of what to do and where to eat.
If you want to stay at a place that is of the beaten track then this is a place for you.

Me and my fiancée visited Tropix while we were exploring northern coast of DR. We didn't want to leave this great place where staff is more than helpful and willing to put extra effort to make everything perfect and enjoyable.

Little cabins (around 30 sq. m) are very clean and welcoming (not one of those generic rooms you might have encountered before), colourful and nicely arranged. Pool is clean, located perfectly in a lush and well kept garden yard that justifies the name of the place more than enough. We didn't take the breakfasts from the hotel menu as we prefer to cook our own food but the staff always remembered to make a fresh coffee.

To top it all, the price is the best you can get. We double checked that.

Also, if you're friend of animals as I am, you'd be happy to know that the Tropix is supporting local animal shelter. All and all, I can hardly find anything that could lower our enthusiasm for this special place. I strongly recommend it to everyone willing to spend some time in Sosua. You will not be disappointed!

Tropix was the perfect place for my daughter and I to catch up with each other after a busy school year. From the moment we arrived the sense of peace and relaxation that we both craved was there. Getting away from the hectic pace of day to day life - television, work, responsibilities - was the goal of this vacation. We found that, and so much more during our stay at Tropix. Our inn keeper, Carl and all the staff made sure that we were comfortable and happy throughout out our stay. With Carl's help we were able to spend a magnificent day at Playa Grade and experience some of the local flavor never available to guests at the so-called all inclusive resorts. I will forever remember peaceful evenings, poolside, under the stars. My only regret? We didn't stay longer. I will be returning!

I have frequented the Sosua area several times in the past few years and Hotel Tropix is by far the best place I have encountered. It is a quiet, tranquil, and private hotel just outside of the downtown Sosua area. It is almost like being in your very own oasis with a SPOTLESS pool surrounded by tropical flowers and plants. It is a great and convenient place if you just want to relax in a lounge chair by the pool all day, or if you want to explore the area a little more. Juan and Morena, the main staff, are some the most friendly and good-hearted people around. Juan makes amazing pancakes, delicious Dominican coffee, and a traditional Dominican lunch that is to die for. Rooms are always clean and have fans and AC. For an animal lover like me, Tropix was great! Lola and Ruby, the two dogs, are content to be by themselves and not bother you if you aren’t a dog lover, but if you are they are super sweet and are happy to hang out with you if you want. Overall, Tropix is a little slice of heaven nestled in Sosua. I will be returning there as soon as time allows.

Adrien, Thank you for your interest in Tropix. There are a couple of options for transferring from SD to Sosua. You could rent a car; it's about a 4-5 hour trip, and there are many car rental agencies at the SD airport. I would advise renting from an international rental agency so that you have appropriate insurance as well as a GPS. You can also transfer via taxi from the SD airport to either Caribe Tours or Metro Bus, the two major bus companies in country. Both are equal in price; Caribe Tours has more buses, but you will arrive in Sosua at the other end of town from the hotel and will need to take a taxi or contact us so that we can collect you from the bus stop. Metro Bus has the advantage of being only a block from the hotel. If you decide to take the bus, bring a sweater/sweatshirt/shawl, as both are HEAVILY air conditioned to semi-arctic levels. The trip via bus takes 5 hours. If you need more information or if you have any other questions, please contact us directly on our website or call 809-571-2291. Looking forward to welcoming you. Meems Ellenberg, Manager, Tropix Hotel
