This Canadian owned Coco Hotel is very inexpensive. My stay was under $200 for the week. The basic needs are met in the Coco Hotel with their being a comfortable bed, private bathroom and shower, bar fridge and safe in each room. Some rooms have air-conditioning as mine did. The hotel is about a 15 minute walk to the center of Sosua where all the action is.

The positives are that the price is certainly great and the staff are over-the-top friendly and willing to provide you any local travel advice. The bar itself, while very basic, has a tiki feel about it. The mostly Canadian guests with some Americans and other nations guest mixed were pleasantly friendly. Many Canadians who live in the area are regular guests at the bar and a wealth of local travel information.

The place can be noisy in the late evenings, at least on the bottom floor where I was. The ceiling fan was instrumental in creating enough white noise to make sleeping bearable. The Coco Hotel is eco friendly in that the hot water is solar heated. During the sunny day, the showers are nice and warm, however in the early morning or on a cloudy day the water temperature can be a little chilly.

I want to specially mention the Canadian owner Shelley who made my stay pleasant and was always willing to give me local tourist advice and engage in any number of interesting conversations. Please note that this hotel is a cash only business.

If you are looking for a cheap place to stay, the Coco Hotel works.

This hotel is located about 20 minute walk from the main town. Room was basic with a helpful fridge but not enough storage room. Not very clean, smelly towels and only room cleaning every 3 nights. AC was not included ($5 extra per day). No meals served. They have a nice pool but not recommend for families with kids... clients love to drink and meangle at the front bar all day long. It is a great place if this is your kind of vacations.

This place is awesome! The owners are friendly and entertaining, they are quick to make you feel extremely comfortable and taken care of. The place is very clean, the bar is fantastic and you can request music. If you love animals, you will be greeted by some very lovable dogs, they are so amazing, there are turtles, iguanas, etc. I highly recommend, and will be back again!

I enjoyed my recent stay at the Coco Hotel. The location worked out great for me in
relation to beaches/food/shopping/etc. The owner Shelly and her family/staff were
excellent hosts that provided me with much useful information. While at the hotel; I also had a number of inciteful/interesting conversations with other guests that helped me better understand the Dominican culture. I am hoping at some point
to make it back to Sosua and plan to stay at the Coco hotel again.

Had a great time during my stay at the Coco Hotel. The rooms are on the small side, but have all the essential comforts and conveniences - and what a great price, considering they have a pool and an on-site bar. Shout out to Shelley, one of the owners, who offers a wealth of information about the area - what to do, where do go and what to avoid. A very caring person, you can count on her for just about anything you need during your stay.

My husband asked one of the owner to unlock the gate (whichi s fenced in floor to ceiling) Ian, the owner/owners son would not unlock the gate. He was not allowed to leave. My husband of course said wtf man, Ian. Open the door. Then this guy pepper sprayed my husband in the face. I was sitting with our friend, we could hear the screaming. We ran out. I stood in front of the owner and my husband, I kept saying no no no stop. The owner picks up a spear circa 1500s and runs at me, i jump away, he tells the dogs( belgian malonios) to attack. They attack. I turn and watch as the owner chokes my husband till he is unconscious while the dogs keep biting him. The mother (actual owner) comes out and stops the attack. Screams at us to leave. I grab our suitcase and chihuahua and we run out the now unlocked gate. My husband yells at the guy AND HE SHOOTS AT HIM WITH A PISTOL. Yeah. Minus 10000000 stars. Dont stay there

Response from Shelley Taylor, Owner at Coco Hotel
Responded 2 July 2024
Good Day: For the safety and security of our permanent clients and our visiting guests , we keep our hotel gates locked from midnight till 7am. We have a full time security guard and a bell on the gates for guests coming in late or late arrivals. Guests leaving between these hours just need to let us know so we can let our security know. This has never been a problem. We do not want guests wandering the hotel late at night or entering the closed bar area. Also we are a pet friendly hotel. However, the visitors need to keep their dogs leashed and quiet after hours. We have our own dogs so need to maintain security without causing major problems. Weapons are not allowed on the property. Security has pepper spray as a deterrent for possible problems. We do have toy swords, etc as decorations. It is unfortunate this situation happened but we need to maintain order in order to keep all our quests feeling safe. Drugs and alcohol are no excuse for bad behaviour. Thank you, Shelley Taylor

This hotel is definitely the place if you are looking for one of the best values in town without breaking the budget. I am the type of person who relied on AC but the fans are strong enough to keep you comfortable at night. The drink prices Ian serves and the quantity of alcohol that he gives is way more than any other bar in Sosua. You will encounter people of all ages race and gender looking to have a good time. The hotel is a perfect set up where its not to far from the strip and also very close to playa chiquita (the beach).

The rooms come with a safe, frig and a tv that has even English speaking channels. Also the pool in the middle of the hotel is very nice and comfortable. Last but not least the security of the place is great and I never feared losing my possessions in my entire months stay.

Some extras theres an italian restaurant next store that makes great dishes for 200-300 pesos that the owner makes from scratch and will deliver it to the coco bar. Also drop-off laundry is about 50 feet away down the street.

The first few days at this hotel was great. Shelley was fun, however, Ian has a very short temper and shows it in front of guests. I asked Shelley and Ian, the owners of the hotel, about changing my sheets and toiletries every day instead of once per week. Ian became very explosive in his temperament. Days following, I had to ask him if still wanted me to remain at his hotel. At one point, I felt uncomfortable asking Shelley or Ian for any changes that may need to be made to make my stay comfortable.

Though they were in renovations, the hotel was not entirely clean. Ian uses the pool to clean some of the hotel outdoor chairs. At one point, the pool chairs were used to hold unclean mattresses.

The environment was not professional.

They have a great private beach but they didn't act like they wanted my business. Fortunately, I found another hotel with professional services.

As Shelley told me in one conversation, " What do you expect for $25/day?"

Responded 20 Aug 2012
Thank you for your review. The Coco Hotel does its annual renovations and maintence (pool cleaning/painting, furniture cleaning/repair,purchasing new mattresses, room painting/ maintenance, etc.) during the slow season of July & August. This unfortunately requires some disruption around the hotel and movement of furniture with short pool closures as well. We try to inform guests of these renovations at their time of booking and make sure that noise is kept to a minimum with no work starting till after 10:30 am. We have reduced rates and specials at this time to help compensate these inconveniences. Our guests are always asked to let us know of any problems or concerns at their time of stay. Also we ask our guest on arrival how often they would like their room cleaned. We have learned over the years that some guests do not like anyone going into their room and so we let our guests decide how often and when. Clean sheets and towels are always available. Also guests who book day by day make it difficult for managers to plan around them. I appreciate being able to respond to this reveiw and make sure that everyone is aware of our routine at the hotel and I hope feel comfortable enough to let us know how we are doing at the time of their visit.

Hi just did a trip (first time to The DR) on advice from a sigle buddy. I looked up read the reviews on Coco hotel, so I thought I would give it a shot. First nite dropped my bags after a long day of travelling went to the little outside bar down stairs, which is part of the hotel (did not even really look at my room). This is were I met Bernie and Judy tending bar, Judy is quieter but she knows whats going on were as Bernie (such a great guy he is also a new buddy for me) is a riot he is full of life stories of his travels around the world. From that moment on I had nothing but fun, it was like the tv show Cheers, different people showing up thru the nite/day, some local expats some visiting thru. Met some very nice people even a Irishman with a dog that has has a tail like a pig and a guy who has now become a friend Eric from England/USA/DR who took me under his wing. There is a corner store across the road for some of your essentials ie water beer or what ever, local ladies walk right by you at the bar selling fresh fruit so dont have to get that from the store.Your about 3-5 min by taxi to the strip like area, not the best place for couples or ladies (after the sun goes down) but awesome for the guys.Food was great try out the Jolly Roger great place Canadian owned so you feel at home. Back to my room, it was clean one bedroom with a full bathroom mine had a/c which I never used because the time of year (Jan) was not to bad on the heat/humidity. I used the fan tho at nite. The owners were away(one is a fellow Canuck) who I never met maybe next time. Exchange your money asap it just makes it easier (best day for exchange is Wed, or just get it from the bank ATM as you need ( make sure its a proper bank at banking hours to avoid any little machine problems). Anyways long story short, if you are a single guy or traveling with a wingman, get yourselves a room each go down to the bar say hi to Bernie/Judy and start enjoying yourself. telling them Steve the old fireman said hi...Im savin my useless Canadian pennies now to head back .
