We were lucky to have come in a day early as the hotel was over booked by about 50 rooms. THose that did not get a room were sent to sister resort which was a dump. I mean a one star hotel that had a mud hole for a swimming pool.
Good Points: Food is pretty good for a buffet. Staff are freindly even though few speak English. Housekeeping staff are excellent and room was very clean. Weather and ocean are nice.
Bad Points: Not much to do in Sousa, economy is very bad and many shops are hardly staying in business. Cigars are all knock-offs so don't get ripped off. Don't pay more than 400 pesos ($10) for a box. Food is pretty much the same every day so you will get tired of it. Breakfast and lunch good, dinner left alot to be desired. The reef near the hotel is dead and snorkling is barely ok. Day trips are not as advertised and take two to three hours just to get to where you are going. Don't go to Paradise Island it is a spick of land about a mile from shore and there are hundreds of tourist there at a time.
Last Word. Would not recommend due to changing rates after arriving and very little to do. If all you want is to sit on a pool deck as beach is only 50 feet wide, and drink watered down drinks, eat so-so food then this is the place for you.
FLIGHT: We were surprised to discover that our charter flight was not "Zoom Airlines" as outlined in the brochure, but instead "Excel Airways" from Great Britain. The flight crew were very pleasant and accommodating in our opinion. The inflight meal was basic but good. Of special note: If you have pre-assigned seating, you may not necessarily get these seats should the plane type be changed, as in our case. On our return trip they did their best to accommodate our request for "extra leg room" seating and were seated in the emergency aisle. These seats do NOT recline and was thus a very uncomfortable return trip!
TRANSFER AND CHECK-IN: The sun came out just as we landed in Puerto Plata...Woo hoo! Dominican customs was a breeze...you need to present your passport/identification and your filled-out tourist card. KEEP THE OTHER PORTION THEY RETURN TO YOU WITH $20 U.S IN YOUR HOTEL SAFETY DEPOSIT BOX. YOU REQUIRE THIS TO EXIT COUNTRY! With luggage in hand we walked outside to find our Tour Rep who directed us to our bus. Porters are fairly assertive and will want a tip. A firm "No gracias" should do. This response also works when shopping @ The Sosua Bay market by the ocean...they will actually step in front of you in an effort to get you into their shop/stand. Barter, barter, barter! You would be amazed the deals you can get for rum, cohiba cigars etc...
We arrived at Sosua Bay reception @ 15 mins later. Very busy here for check-in, but effortless for us as we were the only two from our bus staying @ Victorian House! A beautifully- appointed lobby greeted us...gorgeous grounds and plantation-style architecture everywhere. We would recommend making A-La-Carte reservations upon your arrival as they fill up quickly and have limited seatings.
FOOD: Sabatini's (Italian) was truly excellent! For an extra $15 U.S you may order from a more extensive menu...well worth it! You are offered coffee and liqueurs following your meal...very classy. The other specialty restaurants also very good...sushi @ Asian delectable! While on the topic of food...the buffet was adequate in terms of selection. Our main complaint would be that they do not cook the food adequately (i.e: runny omelette). We heard of many guests who got sick from the food, but we were fine all week. I did get diarrhea our last day and am still not certain of the source, but use common sense, do not drink the water and wash your hands frequently. (We have since heard that this buffet actually closed down the week after we were there due to a multitude of sick guests) You can buy bottled water at the "Super Mercado" which is just a few mins' walk from the hotel.
ACCOMMODATIONS: We were delighted to have our request for a jacuzzi suite granted. Very nicely appointed with very comfortable bed! Incredible view of the bay with the jacuzzi on our balcony. We were pleasantly surprised by the number of tv stations available; came in handy during the three days of rain which leads us to our next topic...
WEATHER AND WATER: Yes, three days of rain, but we made the best of it. There is a huge jacuzzi beside the Mexican restaurant which provided ample warmth and opportunities to socialize during inclement weather! (tip one of the wait staff @ beginning of the week and they will take good care of you!! Thank you Ramon for our jacuzzi drinks!) PLEASE BEWARE! Tiles everywhere are extremely slippery when wet! Several guests fell and hit their heads. Also take extreme caution when walking on the lower tanning decks as the ocean water drenches the boards. As for shower water...we had NO hot water all week...lukewarm at best. On a few occasions there was no water at all! Apparently as a result of the heavy rainfall, the water main broke. Go figure. Naturally, it would just so happen that all the rainwater in Sosua bay ended up in our room one night...very cozy indeed!
Try 1:30 AM with an inch or so flooding the room...turns out the drain on our balcony was clogged. Needless to say, when we called the front desk the poor chap who arrived @ the door was unprepared for what he witnessed: "MAMA MIA!" was all he could say. Good thing we had befriended our neighbours because the water actually flooded their room as well! So, they had to find us alternate sleeping arrangements for the night...at 2:30 in the morning. The night manager didn't even show up until two of us actually went to the main lobby. We ended up @ Sosua Bay Hotel on a bed which resembled a rock and thankfully returned to our suite the next day. No apology from the Management, nothing. Nice. A free dinner at the French Bistro would have been thoughtful.
AZZURRO BEACH RESORT/ CABARETE: With the "All -Inclusive" package comes access to Victorian House/Sosua Bay's sister hotel, about a ten minute shuttle ride away. As mentioned in other reviews, it was next-to-impossible to get a seat on the shuttle due to its' small size and the fact that it was allegedly broken-down for a portion of our week. We decided to take a cab with our wet-feathered neighbours one cloudy afternoon. What a beautiful beach and well-worth the trip. Even though it started to rain again, we sat under the palapa beach bar and had a great time!
SERVICE: Overall good, particularly the housekeeping staff. They did a great job and do appreciate tips as well as toiletry item gifts for their hard work. Please know that these people work very long hours and earn next-to-nothing for wages and therefore really appreciate any tips you leave.
MISCELLANEOUS: We did a tour of Purto Plata as an excursion; very disappointing. We expected to visit a rum factory only to discover that it was apparently a National Holiday and was consequently closed. Our tour guide was supposed to be speaking in French but it sounded like Spanish to us! We actually left the tour early to return by cab to our hotel for $25 U.S!
For those sun-worshippers out there...there are great tanning decks everywhere, but a good quiet spot is just below the large jacuzzi hot-tub, with comfortable lounges. Be sure to place any items of value in your carry-on bag for your return trip...your luggage may be tampered with after you check your suitcase in Dominican Customs!
OVERALL IMPRESSIONS OF THE RESORT: Very beautiful overall, however in need of repair...paint chipping, disco closed, boards on tanning decks need replacing, better access to ocean from these decks to avoid hitting rocks/coral and cracks in some of the floor tiles throughout. We have heard that they will be closing this resort for renovations in March 2005...perhaps this much-needed facelift will ensure a prosperous future for this resort!

My teenagers (18 and 20) could not get over the spectacular view of the bay. The water was crystal clear and we immedialtely went for a swim. There are alot of stairs but after all the eating and drinking I welcomed the excercise. We mostly stayed on the lower deck and sat under the thached umbrellas. We used the snorkeling equipment as well as the kyacks. I encourage the use of the Kyacks you can go all the way out into the bay and visit the coral reefs. If you have an extra snorkel and mask I encourage you to bring it as the dive shop will only allow the use of the equipment for an hour each day. Also bring a pair of beach shoes as the water has some coral and a few sea urchins. We took a banana boat ride which is five dollars a person for 20 minutes. Well worth it and alot of fun. We also took advantage of some of the hotel activities. We went on a bike tour of the town of Sosua. Very charming town and very safe. People are not pushy. We also went to a night club which is right down the street called the Voodoo lounge. This was good for my young adults at night. The evening entertainment at the hotel is really good and the entertainers practice very hard during the day to perfect the show. As far as the food is concerned it was fantastic. The first three nights we ate at the buffet. Saturday night the specialty was seafood; Lobster, clams, oysters just unbelievable. They offered a variety of food stations with a chef cooking up what ever you wanted. The breakfast and lunches were excellent as well. The other three nights we ate at the Mexican, Asian and Italian resturants. Make your reservations as soon as you check in the hotel. There is limited seating. Be prepared to gain a few pounds. We really did not want to leave but unfortunatley all good things must come to and end. Also, if you are interested in purchasing liquor to bring home, go to Super Super(liquor store) which is a few minute walk from the hotel. Unbelievable prices that we would pay a fortune in the states. Please be considerate... the people that work at the resort are payed very little. Something like five dollars a day. So be generous with the tips, they work very hard. The Dominican people are not only beautiful but they are warm and gracious. One last thing... visit the sister propery the Azzuro resort. It is about a 15 minute shuttle ride. The beach goes on forever and this is where the kite sailing and wind surfing take place. You can use the equipment for no charge. The food is terrible so eat breakfast at the hotel before leaving. Mydaughter and I went on a two hour horseback ride on the beach. If you have ever wanted to gallop without restriction then this is the place to do it. The beaches are virgin as there are no hotels and few people. You can ride forever and thats exactly what we did. The cost was $25.00 per person for two hours. The owner who is from Germany took us as well as another guide. If you like riding do it!! Have a great time. We will definately return. Its paradise!!
house of horrors
On a good note the Cajun restaurant served excellent food and the service was great. This is the only restaurant on premise. Do yourself a favor and stay away from the hotel.
The Good: The weather was beautiful. However it may be too muggy for some. It was very hot and muggy and you need at least a couple of showers a day. The hotel staff kept the room pretty nice and clean. The staff was also very friendly. It is a real plus if you know Spanish and tip them a few dollars to keep your fridge really stocked with everything! The live band at night is great! Enjoy their true DR style. The water was great! The beach by the Hotel was ok..the Azzuro Hotel has a cleaner beach!
Piergorgio Hotel Resturant -- make a left out the hotel at the end of the road and make a left again. See the hotel on the right. Great for food and drinks -- ROMANTIC!! DR is great for relaxation and serious sunning.
The Bad: The buffet was average to poor. Do not eat somethings such as cream sauces and raw fish. Make reservations when you 1st get there and book your days at the restaurants as the buffet gets real old and tired.
The Real Ugly: The night shows are horrible and I mean horrible. I doubt the dancers had one lesson in their lives. Don't waste your time watching the shows.
The mosquitos will kill your legs here in DR! If you do not drench yourself in OFF at night you will be eaten!!! The hotel is not up to USA standards on being clean at ALL -- so if you are picky like us you will HATE the stained white comforter covers and Hospital Quality Sheets. The water was shut off after 1:00 am and the lights will go out once in awhile. We will try DR again but not here!
The location, as other reviewers have reported, is stunning, and every room has an amazing view. But the rooms are very substandard and in need of refurbishing. We stayed in a Spa Suite (not really a suite, it's a room). The lighting was horrible, we had to swipe some brighter light bulbs from the outside lights so we could see in the room at night. The bathroom had great water pressure and plenty of hot water but did not feel clean and emitted sewer gases that fouled up the room. We also had to re-arrange the furniture so that we could get to an outlet for my laptop. One good thing is that the bed was great....very comfortable. The air conditioning (no remote) was very noisy. The sliding doors to the balcony were very difficult to close and lock.
The beach is about a five minute walk away and we had the use of the two pools in the closed
hotel next door.
We had various meals at the restaurant (separately owned and managed) and the food was very good. The service is friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, the people who staff the front desk (except for Maria) are very indifferent and we never felt like a "guest".
A couple of other things about the room: the wi-fi is very good, there is no clock, radio or telephone and if you want to use the safe, it's $3 a day extra. Also, we were told that if we wanted to pay our bill by credit card, there would be an 18% fee added.
Overall, the Victorian House has an excellent location but needs to be refurbished. If that doesn't bother you, you'll probably be okay. And like another reviewer said, maybe this is as good as it gets in Sosua.
