On our way from the nearby Sun Bear feeding time and Bangkirai Treetops walk, we decided to detour to Samboja Lodge before continuing to the beach for a relaxing sunset snack. The access road is terrible, and must be much worse after heavy rain, but we were lucky and reached the Lodge after only 10 minutes. On walking into the...

A great place with a mission to save the endangered orangutans and sun bears. Staff and volunteers work with former pets and animals from circuses with a goal to release them back into the nature. A limited number of animals, not fit for realease due to illness, are kept on artificial islands for visitors to see. Trip from Balikpapan takes...

This is a wildlife rehabilitation centre, mainly for orang utans which would not survive in the wild for various reasons. We took a 4 hour visit with a guide, costing 500,000rp each (2 of us) and it was well worth it. You begin by walking to the nearby islands which are the sanctuaries for the orang utans. The guide is...

Love the place. You can visit the orangutan rehabilitation and sunbear sanctuary here. There will be a project manager that will accompany you through your stay. The project manager was very nice and explained about orangutan rehabilitation and sunbear sanctuary very well. I learned a lot about wildlife conservation during my stay there. For a wildlife sanctuary, this place is...

This is one of the very few places in the world where you can meet the orangutan and learn about their lifestyle. At the same time you can appreciate the effort that the BOS fundation is doing to prevent them from extinction and help them to be reintroduced in their natural habitat. You will also have the chance to see...

The lodge is about an hour and a half from the airport. The rooms are clean but be prepared for having to sleep under mosquito nets and cold showers. Plus the water coming out of the shower, sink and toilet are all brown and basically directly pulled from the dirty river. You'll want to brush your teeth with bottled water....

We recently visited Samboja lodge in Kalimantan. The Lodge is just an hour drive away from Balikpapan making it a perfect day trip or weekend overnight getaway. I live in Jakarta so it is even a great weekend getaway from the bustling capital. The rooms are decent and well maintained. They are pricey yes, but hey - the Orang Utan's...
