Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A lovely place to stay! Highly recommend Port Wine! We had a room for 2 (two twin beds), the room was VERY clean, with a fan and very cool at night! We had a line outside of the room to hang our wet clothes. We were provided with clean towels daily and the entire compound has free WiFi. The breakfast was nice, eggs cooked to your choice with veggies, bacon, fruit, toast, cereal, coffee, etc! The best part was the staff! Everyone was so kind and welcoming!

Thank You to Tai, his family and warm welcoming staff at Port Wine Guest House. Large spacious, clean room with healthy breakfast included. Really enjoyed being at your place to watch Tonga play in the World Cup on your big screen with friends. You live on a majestic island, thanks for sharing it, with such magical experiences of swimming with whales, see you in 2020!

We booked portwine guesthouse because there was such good reviews online, and the reviews really did live up to reality. We booked a rather pricey room (300TOP/night) but it was worth it. the room was large with 1 queen bed, 1 single bed and a sofa. there was even a little private balcony to dry clothes. we were given a room at the end of the corridor hence we had a huge spacious area outside our room with a table and some chairs and a laundry line. there was also AC in the room that was lovely. The room was spotless, so clean! for breakfast there is a small buffet line with fruits cake and coffee but you can also order eggs, toast, etc etc with the staff. they cook it on the spot so it’s hot and fresh, delicious! We also booked whale swimming tours with them, each day Salote (the owner) would drive us to the marina and show us to our boat, we were on different boats everyday but that was fine with us. Sala (the staff that we did our bookings via email correspondence) replied our emails very quickly and was so helpful with booking the airport transfers, accomodation and whale swims. portwine’s location is ideal because it’s super near town, just a few minutes walk to the nearest convenience store, restaurants, market, banks, cafes. we loved our stay in portwine and hopefully we will be back again soon!

In the three plus years I have been staying at Port Wine over the years I have never been disappointed. If there is a problem, it is quickly resolved. Tai and Salote and their fabulous staff have been so kind and welcoming. Plus their kids are darling and let's you also get to know a real Tongan family. I have stayed in several of the rooms but my favorite is the very private bungalows in the back. There are some sweet smaller rooms in the main old building. The new big addition has a variety of lodging options including opportunities for guests to self-cater. I always love their breakfast in the open and cheerful breakfast/bar area. Port Wine is very close to the small CBD and easy walking to several restaurants and stores. Port Wine is quiet, beautiful, charming and always worth the visit.

A small but great guest house. In the kitchen there is a refrigerator and gas cooktop and table and chairs. Shops to buy food are only a couple of minutes walk. The owner TAI and his family ae very helpful. I will stay there again. Most shops are closed on Sundays. A small and popular bakery opens about 4pm on Sunday. It is a one minute walk. Staff can arrange the many tours available.

What a gem found. We arrived late to another guesthouse but their water pump was broke so they found us here. We stayed a few nights during our trekking around Tonga Islands. One of the cleanest places on the island. It’s a bit expensive if your on a budget but few nights worth it. Bread chips when we settled in. Very nice owners.

August/September 2018 marked my third trip to Tonga, and my third visit to Port Wine Guest House. I can't imagine staying any place else in Vava'u. The simple reason is the people -- Tai and his family and staff make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. On my most recent trip, I got sick with an intestinal bug. Tai's wife took me to the hospital, stayed with me during the visit, and made sure that I had proper care. When I returned to the guest house after treatment, she got a hospital staff nurse to stop by and check on me twice that afternoon. Tai also moved me to a larger room to make it easier to recuperate. Honestly, I felt like I was part of their family during my visit. They went into town and got food and drink for me, and made absolutely sure that I was comfortable and had what I needed. Port Wine features great people, and also great accommodations! Tai has expanded again, adding an entire new two-story building that was nearing completion during my September visit. The covered and very comfortable outdoor common area becomes even more of a focal point with the addition of the new multi-room building. Breakfast is served in the common area, and it becomes the place that guests gather after a day spent fishing, diving, exploring, whale watching, etc. There are always a varied collection of guests from throughout the world, and the common area is the perfect place to interact and meet interesting travelers. I highly recommend Port Wine for your trip to Vava'u. Book a room early - it fills up quickly!

Stayed at port wine for four nights, very happy we chose this accomodation. Lovely friendly staff and the breakfasts were beautiful. Nice and close location to town makes a five minute walk to the whale swim dock.
