Tripadvisor gives a Travellers’ Choice award to accommodations, attractions and restaurants that consistently earn great reviews from travellers and are ranked within the top 10% of properties on Tripadvisor.
Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

This wonderful guest house is straight out of central casting for a place to stay in a tropical paradise. Scrupulously clean, large rooms all with Tongan themed decor, staff who wash and hang out your laundry for a minimal fee, wide and airy verandahs above a lovely garden, generous breakfast served by smiling staff. Could not fault anything at Port Wine, it is a credit to the team who run it. It is 5 minutes walk from town and surrounded by churches (be prepared to be woken by church bells and drums at 5.00am most days but that is part of the Tongan experience). Whatever your religious beliefs I strongly suggest you attend at least one of the nearby church services - the beautiful clothing and especially the singing are stunning.

I recently stayed at the Port Wine Guest House (bed & breakfast).
The hospitality was wonderful. True to Tongan style, I was warmly welcomed and treated in a gentle and kind manner. I loved that each morning Tai would open up a coconut for me to drink from and I could enjoy a buffet breakfast.
My room was lovely with deep wood furniture and white bedding. The whole house is great and I enjoyed that I could make my self a drink in the kitchen at any time and that there was unlimited filtered watered available for me to help myself to.
I was traveling solo and felt very safe staying inside the house and knowing Tai and his family live on the property.
The house is only a couple of minutes walk to the main street and markets and Tai was happy to organize a Taxi for longer trips.
I was sad to leave and could have easily stayed there for many weeks. Actually, I am already planning my next stay at Port Wine and I have only just returned home.
Room Tip:I stayed in the house but there are also separate buildings on the property that may suit families.

Port Wine Guest House is a cute small place, owned by Tongan family. But is it really worth the money? Absolutely not.
My review is based upon the value that is expected from a place that charges this much. I have stayed at budget accommodations before and I don’t mind it. But the price wasn’t nearly as high. We were charged 180 pa’anga per night (90 pa’anga per person) to share one room in the new house. But, if one person stays in the same room it only costs 90 pa’anga. What exactly is the extra 90 pa’anga (45 Euros) for? Please keep this in mind if you’re travelling as a couple.
The room was simply too small with no wardrobe or even simple shelves to place your clothes on. We had to keep all our belongings in the bags which was really annoying. So, basically, we could have rented 2 rooms for the same price as 1 and just used one of them as a wardrobe. I didn’t mind so much that the bathroom was tiny, but it had no mirror, tiny sink, no hangers for the clothes and no place at all for the toiletries. Also, I could hear the neighbors clearly while in there, so I just assume they could hear us too.
The same bread and papaya was for breakfast every morning. You would think that on a fertile island like that they would have lots of fresh fruits available for you. We had to walk down to the local market to buy some ourselves.
No one ever cleaned our room or even changed our bed sheets during the week and a half we were there. We had to ask for toilet paper ourselves and felt like criminals while doing it. They have a laundry machine in the house which we used a few times during our stay. At checkout we were told that using their laundry machine was 10 pa’anga each load, but they “let it slide”. There is no sign around the washing machine notifying you of this.
Do yourself a favor and find another place to stay on this wonderful island. Would you really trust all these “1 review” individuals?

I spent 8 nights at a new house facing the lively little garden of Port Wine. There were clean towels and bed linen, thick mattress and strong hot water shower. I was impressed by the stained glass edged bathroom mirror and ceiling lampshade and leadlight with shapes of whales right above the door opening (some are the works of Tai). The kitchen there is my favourite - every morning, the long plain wooden table was delicately laid with breakfast of a variety of choice: coffee, milk, cereals, pastries, muffins, loaf of sliced bread, butter, jam, sliced papaya, water melon ... It is also a place where the lodgers chat and make friends with each other. Tai and his mom who are so gentle and considerate warmly received me. The neighbouring villages also let you have a glimpse of the lives of the locals. Port Wine is more than a place just for your luggage and a bed.

We booked portwine guesthouse because there was such good reviews online, and the reviews really did live up to reality. We booked a rather pricey room (300TOP/night) but it was worth it. the room was large with 1 queen bed, 1 single bed and a sofa. there was even a little private balcony to dry clothes. we were given a room at the end of the corridor hence we had a huge spacious area outside our room with a table and some chairs and a laundry line. there was also AC in the room that was lovely. The room was spotless, so clean!
for breakfast there is a small buffet line with fruits cake and coffee but you can also order eggs, toast, etc etc with the staff. they cook it on the spot so it’s hot and fresh, delicious!
We also booked whale swimming tours with them, each day Salote (the owner) would drive us to the marina and show us to our boat, we were on different boats everyday but that was fine with us.
Sala (the staff that we did our bookings via email correspondence) replied our emails very quickly and was so helpful with booking the airport transfers, accomodation and whale swims.
portwine’s location is ideal because it’s super near town, just a few minutes walk to the nearest convenience store, restaurants, market, banks, cafes.
we loved our stay in portwine and hopefully we will be back again soon!

Tai, Salote and the Tongan crew have done a brilliant job keeping this place real and true to Tongan culture and hospitality whilst serving the diverse nationalities who stay. Such a relaxing environment and a great example of a Tongan success story, owned and operated by Tongans. Malo aupito, Ofa atu.

The pair of us stayed at Port Wine for 4 weeks during our medical elective at the local hospital. We stayed in the original guest house which was basic but spotlessly clean. The kitchen facilities weren't the best but adequate to rustle something up. What really sets this place apart is how homely it feels. Tai and Salote really make you feel as ease there. The communal outside area and gardens are a beautiful and cosy place to relax and meet fellow travellers. The three resident dogs (and cat) are so sweet, they started to feel like our own pets! It's brilliantly located just a few minutes walk from town and the shops- and importantly for elective students, the hospital. We opted to pay extra to have breakfast there (included in the more expensive rooms) which was delicious and there was loads of choice every day- fresh fruit, bacon and eggs, fresh cakes. All in all we had an amazing stay and were very sad to leave, we hope to be back in beautiful Vava'u one day. Book early if you want to stay in the peak season (June-October) as the place gets full!

When I travel to Vava'u, Port Wine Guest House is the place to stay. Toutai, Luisa, Salote and staff are friendly and welcoming. They always make sure that I am taken care of and it makes me feel like I'm one of the family :). It is very clean, safe and surrounded by Luisa's beautiful garden. WiFi is available and the breakfast is just awesome! It is definitely the place to be and to stay when you are in Vava'u!

We spent 6 nights at port wine and would highly recommend it. We went as a couple but it would be great fun as a group. Tai is fantastic and has got lots of great local tips. The house itself is beautiful and is kept very clean. Its super close to town with the added bonus of hot water which is hard to find at most places. Overall a lovely place and good value for money - you won't regret staying here.
