Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Wasn’t sure what to expect and boy have we been blown out of the water. Blue Banana’s Maui Fale to which Chris and Shane kindly upgraded us, is magical. We loved it so much we cancelled travelling to another island and stayed an extra week being a total of two weeks. The views are just stunning and waking up to the sound of waves every morning crashing off the reef is just hypnotic. The accommodation, although traditional has everything you need, including en-suite, fridge, microwave, hot plate, communal barbecue, fan, THE most gorgeous “lookout” being the best balcony we have ever come across, wonderful hosts and the one and only Rod who looked after us so well. The beauty of our accommodation made us catch our breath when we first arrived and it did not wear off. The beach is deserted most of the time and the reef hosts a myriad of colourful fish and provides hours of great snorkelling and swimming. We recommend hiring a car as soon as possible, very reasonable and pretty essential. Blue Banana have some good referrals. A tour of the island with Tui is worthwhile and can be done in a day. Arrange to buy some food on your way from the airport to last you a day Until you get yourself organised. There is a local shop at end of road which has basics but if you arrive on a Sunday, everything is closed so best to organise in advance. You will not regret staying in Blue Banana

We had a fantastic stay at Blue Banana. It is run by a wonderful couple, who shared their stories of Tonga. The beach is the best in Tonga, and a great place to interact with locals. There is a local store in the village, and the you can get a bus to Nuku’alofa. Blue Banana organised a day tour of the island for us. We also enjoyed watching the sunset with a drink and good company from the other guests. Relaxing, beautiful, friendly and affordable. Book it now!

My girlfriend and I spent a week at the Blue Banana Beach House. Our hosts, Chris and Shane, were very helpful and accommodating the entire time. We stayed in the "Maui" which was extremely comfortable and offered a direct view to the ocean. The beach was quiet and beautiful. I would love to stay at Blue Banana the next time I'm in Tonga.

Shane and Chris are the perfect hosts and we just loved their beautiful property. With just four fales, the place was quiet and serene even when fully booked. Shane took us shopping and showed us the best eats in town so the self catering plan was a success but we also knew where to go when we wanted to eat out. His knowledge of local history is a huge plus - make sure you get him to take you through the museum. Every sight and activity recommended by the Blue Banana team was a great success. This is a wonderful spot to relax and enjoy the quiet life. Loved hanging with the other guests and strolling through local villages. We’d recommend getting your own local SIM card as wifi speeds and capacities in Tonga are limited. Phone data is fast and cheap.

My husband and I stayed here for 5 days in the tree house. We loved our little privacy and having our own deck to watch the beautiful sunsets. Chris was amazing and always made sure we were comfortable! I was heavily pregnant at the time and so we didn't do much besides relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery (the perfect place for relaxing)! We look forward to going back some day!

We so enjoyed the Maui cottage. It was delightfully well-stocked with everything we needed and we loved our own little private deck & chairs, and thought it was special to visit with others while preparing dinner on the community BBQ too. Lovely Vai visited with us several mornings, and once brought us freshly ground coconut. Later, she demonstrated how to make shaved coconut. And she made us a special tapa, a craft she's done for years. We got to join Chris and Via at the resort next door to watch a rugby game in which Tonga was playing NZ. Also at that resort, we took in an island night. We didn't get to meet, Shane; but, our hostess Chris was a wealth of information and made our stay perfect, offering gadgets from her kitchen and showing us how she paddle-boards with the sharks in the lagoon. Snorkeling was exciting, I had never seen purple corral before. We walked out to where Abel Tasman landed so long ago. Along the way, we spotted a blue-moon butterfly. Your grounds are kept so neat and tidy with soft sand paths leading you here and there, and easy access to the beach. We've been telling all of our friends the best way to travel to Tonga from here, and especially to stay at the Blue Banana! We couldn't have asked for a better vacation, astounding sunsets included. Thank you.

Christine and Shane are amazing hosts. Private beach front, fresh fish plates delivered to your bungalow. You can see the whales swim by from the lookout. HIGHLY recommended! We would come back again in a heartbeat

My wife and I stayed at The Blue Banana (TBB) for 10 nights in August this year after having found the property on the internet. We were picked up at the airport by Shane, who with partner, Chris, jointly runs the property. Because it was late at night and provisions were not readily available, Shane provided us with enough provisions to last us into the next day. TBB is set in beautiful, tropical gardens on a pristine lagoon that is behind a reef along which humpback whales regularly cruise. The whales are easily seen as the reef is only about 200 metres from shore. On some days they could be seen breaching out of the water and seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves. The lagoon’s waters were just right and sea life abounds. Every day was concluded with watching the sun go down over the water from one of the TBB’s observation decks (with drink in hand, of course). Buses leave from the main road a small walk along the road and cost AUD$1.30 to get to town. Shane and Chris are great hosts and are a font of local knowledge. So, if you are looking for a laid-back, close to nature, authentic Tongan experience then The Blue Banana is for you.

Ideal spot, stayed 5 nights in August. Enjoyed the laid back life style, relaxing on the deck watching the whales go by and sunsets. Recommend the fish platters, beautiful fresh fish and salad. Chris and Shane are great hosts, lots of local knowledge. Bus service to town left from village at end of road. Met interesting fellow guests. Would definitely recommend.
