Los Frailes, Merida, Venezuela. … Nestled in a fold of the mountains on a stream that winds through the compound, Los Frailes was a silence-wrapped monastery from its founding in 1643 until just 45 years ago when it became an hotel. Sometimes enveloped in clouds, at 9500 feet, Los Frailes hides at the end of a tortuous 45-mile, two-hour taxi...

Los Frailes. My wife and I stopped here for a night on the way to Merida. A beautiful old hotel in the middle of nowhere, a former monastery with a history dating from the 1600s. It's got a special feel to it, set in the open highlands of this beautiful part of Merida, a stream runs in front, and surrounding...

Used to be (many years ago) a great place but recently (Dec 2014) I was told that a "new administration" took the management of the hotel (bad results!) No hot water, toilet paper, soap and towels. DIRTY (coffee over the beds) and terrible smell!. I had to move with my family (2 small kids who were freezing because no heater)...

This is an attractive establishment and I did not mind staying here for one night in July, but it is difficult to recommend without these warnings: 1. The restaurant is seasonal and only opens August 1st. If you're here before that date, you have to drive 20 minutes to Santo Domingo for dinner and breakfast. 2. As noted above, the...

I loved this place when I visited many years ago. A magical place to be sure...even got to experience an earthquake while I was showering. I would love to return someday. This place was basic but all your needs are met...and I remember a pool hall that visitors could casually use.

The location was remote. I did not choose it. I went on a packaged tour and this was pre-selected by the tour company, Natoura. It was very cold and it was rained all night long. Our room was on the second floor but it was so hard to see because the lights were dim. The stairs were wet and slippery....

My wife and I stayed at Los Frailes in October 2007 whilst travelling around Venezuela. The first thing I'd say is that Los Frailes is not anywhere near Merida. We stayed here overnight whilst travelling (by car) from Merida to Los Llanos. Los Frailes is a converted monastery high in the Venezuelan Andes so if you've come across this hotel...

Stayed at this hotel as part of a trip through the Paramo, Merida, and the Andes. The site is lovely, but a bit remote, in that you need transprotation to go anywhere other than this property. We were dropped off there and thus obliged to eat there or not at all. The first day the breakfast was a disaster, as...
