I have been to this pub/hotel many times but this was my first visit for a couple of years. Lovely old building decorated in very hunting/shooting style which is in keeping with the local area. The weather was grey, dreary and cold, surprisingly neither bars had a fire going! There was a big log burner in the bar we sat...

Arrived about 9.30pm on a Friday, cottage, only a 1 min walk to pub. after long drive we fancied a drink. Went to the pub for 9.45pm and it had closed!!! Next day we went for lunch and arrived at 2pm....no hot food available as we were late....., so we're offered the cold menu, asked for 2 ploughman's but told...

We ate here twice whilst staying nearby; the food and service was excellent on both occasions. The beer is well-kept and Jake's dry wit adds immensely to the whole experience of dining at the Royal Oak. Very refreshing to find a truly unspoilt country inn which stays true to its history and hasn't become just another sanitised 'theme pub'. We'll...

Dropped in here whilst walking Exmoor and just didn't want to leave. The bar is old , adorned with usual Exmoor antlers , dark but friendly . Great roast lunch , very good beer and a super stop . We didn't look at the rooms but the newer part of the hotel looked worth investigating

After a gorgeous morning walking, we booked for lunch at the Royal Oak. Place was very busy only the bar area open. Food was awesome and such large portions, couldn't fault. Only thing is it was a little cold.

We booked for Sunday lunch and left a message saying husband veggie but loves roast without the meat. We eat Sunday lunch out every week at many pubs or restaurants in North Devon/Cornwall and all do Veggie roast, ie Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, vegetables and either VEGGIE GRAVY or RED WINE sauce. The Royal Oak could provide neither veggie gravy...

After a 4 mile walk with our 2 dogs following the river from Tarr Steps to Withypool we had lunch at the Royal Oak. We sat next to the open log fire and really enjoyed lunch. Superb food with plenty of choices on the menu and several real ales to choose from. A very busy Saturday lunchtime in a traditional...

We live fairly close and choose to drive to this inn. The food was delicious but the bar area we sat in was really cold. They had a lovely log burning fire but unless you were sat right on top of it you would have been cold . The staff look like they need cheering up particularly the barman not...

Took myself off to Exmoor for a hike in Oct 16 and wanted somewhere to stay o/night. Found The Royal Oak Inn in Withypool on the net and booked. And, what a find. Everything I was hoping for. Quiet, fairly remote, old, log fire, great food, real ale, fantastic room, friendly people. I prefer to visit places like this in...
