We were one week staying in this hotel. The location is good. For tourists, you are in 10 minutes walking in Patan, where you will find beautiful temples. Nearby is a nice restaurant. The service is lovely. The rooms need a little bit renovation.

Three of us on an official project assignment stayed here in 3 rooms from February 2 to 19, 2016. All rooms were comfortable, clean and serviced with sufficient hot shower water. We found the staff most polite and helpful. Despite problems created by the Indian blockade and the resulting fuel shortage, staff managed to always have boiled drinking water and meals prepared on time. Management and staff strived to please with any special requests (e.g. transport, meals, laundry, seeking advice etc.). The preceding, coupled with current newspapers and the hotel's location close to a major hospital, transport routes, shopping etc. made this an excellent, cost-effective alternative for similar visits.

The Hotel Clarion was a great haven to return to after a hectic day's sightseeing or volunteering in the Kathmandu area. Particularly what my wife and I liked was that it was 'right in the middle of the action' in Kathmandu's bustling Jawalakhel area. Some hotels are three times the price, 'ghetto-ed away' in their exclusive areas, and you never see the real Kathmandu...you also need to pay more in those sort of places for extra taxi fares or expensive restaurant costs just to eat there.
The Clarion staff were friendly and polite, and knew enough English to deal with any queries. We were usually able to change smaller amounts of money there at a fair rate, though there were banks nearby (closed for National Holidays when we first arrived) useful for larger amounts.
Though not a 5-Star venue, the Fiesta Restaurant food was good, tasty and varied enough, with an English Menu and service was pretty good and meant we could re-orient our tastebuds to more Western-style taste if we felt we needed a change from our friends' 'daal-bhat.' There are even cheaper options out in the streets.

Our room (402 on third floor) was en-suite bath/shower, air-conditioned (subject to national 'load-shedding' of about two hours every few days) with a TV (some cable), hot and cold running water. We never got ill at any time in the hotel (but make sure to drink only bottled mineral water when in any Kathmandu hotel!). Our friends' room (302 on second floor) had a fridge, and an additional seating area also. All of us asked for one extra mattress on our beds as we arrived, and could sleep well throughout two weeks' stay.

Rooms were cleaned well daily, and we used the Laundry service for most of our stay and everything was returned washed and ironed for a minimal price compared to the UK. Worth doing! Our friend's Aircon leaked one day and was fixed promptly.

The hotel was opposite the Ekta Bookshop - useful for English-Language books and music and general purposes, and within 5 minutes of other restaurants and eating places (but take a torch at night!). Taxis, local micro-buses and thuk-thuks abound just outside the hotel if you know the system a bit - and Langakhel Bus Park not far away, go left out of the hotel about 15 mins walk. Patan and temples in that direction too (there is hotel info in rooms in English)
There were the usual morning/nightly noises of howling dog, chimes and large planes taking off up to midnight. These apply to all Kathmandu.

All in all the Hotel Clarion was an excellent stay for us and friends, and if we get the chance to come again, we would stay again.

I stayed there a week in February and if I had an option I would have moved immediately.
The room was incredibly dirty. The wood floor had not been mopped in a very long time. It was covered with dust and dirt. The linens were gray and stained. The pillows were stained. The heating system worked occasionally and filled the room with dust.
My bathroom was indescribably dirty.
This could be a ok place if it met even minimum health and cleanliness standards.
The kitchen was filthy.
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

I suspect this hotel exists for the sole purpose of satisfying masochistic foreign aid workers who need to feel that they are "roughing it out". It's located in a nowhere part of Kathmandu - nothing of interest within walking distance. The rooms are basic: a hard bed, coarse sheets and duvet, no heating (although there's an air-conditioner), no elevator and no attempt at customer satisfaction. The bathroom is functional but they provide you with a 10 gm sliver of ugly, black soap replaced only on demand plus a sachet of shampoo - nothing more. Grey, rough towels which have seen better days complement the scene. But all said and done, the plumbing works and there's no reason to complain.

When the power goes off - and it does so frequently - they start a noisy and very smelly generator - it's difficult to sleep with the noise and the choking smell.

My younger colleagues were allotted rooms on the lowest floor; they gave me - a citizen approaching seniority - the highest floor. Climbing up to the 4th floor was interesting, so say the least. One landing has a glass-fronted wooden cabinet displaying awards from the Rotary Club - mainly second prizes, alas. The next landing had a framed print of an ornamental garden with the legend "Love is Only Chatter, Friends all that Matter". Un-nerving: I gave up all thoughts of a drink or two at the bar before negotiating the staircase.

The saving grace is that the little restaurant serves very good food. But it's not enough to act as redemption. Avoid this hotel if you can.

Hotel Clarion comprises a small three storied building on the main road in Jawalakhel, Kathmandu. The place looks like a modification of a residential house. There is a bustling and noisy road outside. Rooms are of a decent size (about 250 sq ft including the bathroom). Fittings and fixture in room as well as bathroom are dated but functional. Room has a small 20 inch flat TV but no refrigerator, electronic safe or arrangement for tea/coffee. There is free wi-fi but speed is variable. There is a split AC but no fan. In Kathmandu weather, a fan may suffice and may be preferred over an AC. There is a place to fix fan on the ceiling but it has been used for an electric bulb. I would suggest the management to consider placing a table fan in each room without which the room feels stuffy. Room service is efficient and prompt. The hotel is a good deal at about US$ 30 per night.

Dear Sir, Thank you very much for taking time to write review on Tripadvisor. Thank you for appreciating our hotel room size and room service. Clarion is situated in upcoming commercial centre yet away from hustle and bustle. The presence of garden with big trees in the front blocks the noise. Most of our guest tell us that Clarion is very comfortable place to return to after sightseeing, day's work or a trip. We sincerely thank you for your suggestions. It's the second time I go to the Clarion when in Kathmandu for work. It is near my office, and it didn't disappoint me (I saw much more fancy places with basic hygiene issues) . It is simple, family run, clean and with good and safe food, which is quite handy if you are tired and don't want to go out at night. Moreover, being a small place every request you might have will be satisfied immediately. I really felt at home when there, despite the caos and the traffic of the city, I found some peace in Clarion. Internet is good in the restaurant and living room and less good in rooms. You can have room service for no additional payment and staff is trained to make you happy.

I had to be in the area for business for 1 month. I stayed for 1 night at Hotel Goodwill before coming to this hotel. Perfect for the professional or business-person yet still Nepali owned and operated. Attentive staff, cooks, maids, front staff etc. I had the AC room which had heat, and the beds were top notch. Carpets could use a replacement in the rooms, but that's it.

I arrived here after staying a few days in another area of Kathmandu. I have to say this is not a good value. For the money you can get a MUCH better hotel in a MUCH better area of Kathmandu BUT I had to be in this area for business. The staff were helpful and friendly. The rooms (I stayed in 2 different ones) were outdated and not too clean.
