Detailed Reviews
I talked the wife into a surfing holiday (reliving my youth), in remote Sumatra. I was positive that she would hate it (not being a surfer and all) and it would be a one of trip. To my surprise she loved it. The camp - resort is set in a Coconut plantation fronted by one of the cleanest surf beaches imaginable. My wife spent the day’s sunbaking, mixing with the local villagers, massages on the beach and cooking lessons with the resorts chef. As for me, still can't surf worth a lick of s***, but with a few remedial surf lessons and Bintangs for encouragement I had an absolute ball. The bungalows are spacious and clean with Bali style indoor outdoor bathrooms. The resort restaurant (Warung) is enormous and encompasses, a massive bar area, dance floor, entertainment are, dance floor and of course eating areas. The food was provided by set menu, we loved it but it may not be for everyone.
Our kids have left the nest, but if we could turn back the clock to when they were teenagers, this would have been the place for us, imagine Bali in the seventies but with better beaches. If you like any of the following this is a place worth thinking about..
Surf, Trekking, Tropics, Monkeys, Fishing, Swimming, Elephants, Hidden Water-falls or just chilling…

It is with great pleasure that I send this note. My friends and I just returned from a 19 night stay in South Sumatra. I am writing this as a seasoned surf traveller. My review is based on comparable 40+ years of experience in surf camps, including Costa Rica, Fiji, New Zealand, Spain, France, Mexico, Canada and Bali.
To be clear, comparing this “surf resort” to the Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton would be a mistake. Specifically, South Sumatra is not a high end, limitless budget destination. It is a rural, no frills sliver of magic on the edge of the jungle.
First off, the facilities are top notch for a surf camp. Our bungalows were kept clean and well-maintained for the duration of our visit. I had no unexpected hangups that might come with an oceanfront stay. The young women whose job it was to clean up our rooms were professional and courteous. Their smiles were infectious, even as they folded my laundry. The guys were always polite, always helpful and a joy to hang out with. We were blessed with a great crew.
Second, the business side of the operation was exceptional. Mel and Raymond were always sure to meet our needs. Mel was a daily ray of sunshine, eclipsed only by the unreal surf we had the entire time. She is the type of employee who should never be let go. In my decades of travel I don’t know that I have ever been so enamored with the personality of the ‘front desk.’ This includes Raymond. He is a true ambassador for the operation. From our 3am arrival to our 3am departure 20 days later, he was awesome. He exudes confidence and surety in every aspect of the job. At no point did I feel I could not ask for his help, advice and perspective. We felt completely secure in knowing that Raymond and his team were there for us. Paired with Mel, I hope the resort does what it takes to keep them in the fold. They are irreplaceable. If I return to the resort and they are not a part of it, I will feel at a loss.
Finally, the food. I can’t say enough about the kitchen. A serious concern of mine when traveling is the food. Due to my ongoing battle with leukemia I am aways leery of my diet. Not once did I experience an upset stomach or queasiness. I consistently experience such things even when I prepare my own meals at home. Aside from that, the food was 5-star. Every dish had exceptional flavor and flair. As I personally told the women in the kitchen, I can tell they cook with love in their hearts because I can taste it in the food they serve.
In closing, without sounding hyperbolic, what they have in South Sumatra is special. I hope they do what it takes to maintain the positive vibe my friends and I have been expressing to everyone since our return to Hawaii.

Firstly I am the non surfing wife and I was stoked in the place. Facilities fantastic. From the minute we arrived we were welcomed, Raymond made me coffee and got a Bintang for my husband. There was a great crew of surfers in the resort also. We were allocated a surf guide And a BIG thank you to Hazma, you were awesome.
Our room was fantastic, bed comfy, hot water(just had to have it). Enough storage, lets face it when travelling in Indo you just don't need much. Bathroom always spotless, thank you to Rica, Nita and Enol. A tip: we had rain so used mozzie coils of a night in the room in case mozzie nets failed.
To the kitchen staff, Tenti,Odang and Fitri, you guys rock. The food was awesome, geared at hungry surfers but plenty of fruit always for those girls that maybe don't need the carb hit. Assortments of fish, chicken, shrimp, beef, tofu and Tempe. I cannot understand anyone that cannot find something there. They do burgers sometimes and I believe pizza but hey your in Indo.........enjoy the cuisine. As for previous comments. Treat those girls with respect and appreciation and they will certainly treat you well.
The break:
The outlook speaks for itself. There are plenty of waves nearby also and that's what the delightful surf guides are for. Just ask.
First aid, well we didn't need it but there were those that did and they have a very good first aid kit and Alexix does a great job there.
Finally Meli and Raymond you made our stay one of the best experiences, you guys run a fine establishment. If in Sumatra, Krui area this is a must stay and we will return.
To everyone else that I have not personally mentioned in the staff area, you do an unbelievable and very capable job looking after your guests. Thank you

We stayed at sumatra surf resort for two weeks.
The location was pretty nice with a lot of coconut trees and beautiful sunsets and beanbags to chill. The bungalows are very simple but everything works properly and if you're lucky some crabs join you while taking a shower.
The food was most of the time quite good but if you don't like rice and chicken better don't travel to indonesia at all!
You have to know that you have to drive (by car or scooter) about 20 to 60 min to reach most of the surf spots. But the waves are pretty sexy and the locals were also nice but unfortunately on big days some spots were pretty crowded.
A disappointment was the welcoming because there was nothing like that. Nobody explained us how the camp works or who we could ask for...whatever.
The staff wasn't friendly at all. We fellt that they tried to charge us for everything to fill their owen pockets. After the worst "adventure" trip ever (we had to walk barefeet through the jungle for 1h...don't ask why) we really had to fight to get the money back. There was never an apology for one of the many mistakes and "wrong charging" they made.
To summarize. Krui and the camp itself was nice but I've never seen such an incompetent and not trustworthy staff in my life...hope they gone change that soon.

Hi Alessio, Thank you for your review. It is difficult to respond to allegations of overcharging by our staff when you do not give any specifics. Furthermore the only additional costs you incurred were your bar tabs which were correct. Less the free beers you were given at camp.I have addressed the issue of the excursion in your friends review. But once again you were told it was too dangerous to go due to the torrential rain and impossible to get to the top of the waterfall. You were refunded 50% of the cost back at our camp. I don't see how that's overcharging? Our brochure for adventure excursions clearly states how long it takes and what foot wear to wear. If you choose to go in bare feet how are we responsible? The reason you had to walk is that the waterfall is not by the side of the road it is in the jungle where waterfalls are usually situated. Mely, Remon, Hassan and Hamsa are available all day every day to answer any questions or give advice and they do a super job. But you do need to ask them if you need or want anything mate. We support our staff 100%, they are friendly, caring and most importantly love welcoming our guests. Thanks for your review. Michael Maxwell Owner

The camp is in an awesome location and the grounds are beautiful. With some fine tuning and a bit more effort with nice Indonesian food it could be a very enjoyable place to stay. At this stage from my experience it is over priced and no where near the standard they are claiming. The value for money is located back up the road.
Good luck to the crew there but I won't be going back.

Thanks for taking the time to review our place. We really appreciate the feedback you have given us. We asked all our guests to review us and we did expect a few hand grenades lobbed at us. As you know we only opened in July this year and the place was still a work in progress when you stayed. So being the new kids on the block it does take time to get things running smoothly and up to the standards we want to provide. We are really stoked that you liked the Bungalows and how clean the place was. Since you stayed we have added a brand new pool table and table tennis table, purchased a Bluetooth sound system, added another 100 movies to our DVD library, purchased 2-10 kg washing machines for guest laundry service, purchased another 2 LCD TV's, upgraded our Wi-Fi network, built a 2 storey look out tower with a BBQ, increased our satellite TV coverage to 40 channels, built 6 more 40sqm Bungalows with hot water showers ( which now gives us 11 twin share Bungalows with hot water), put on more staff to improve service standards ( yep we were penny pinching ) and purchased an industrial capacity generator so we aren't reliant on the crappy local power supply anymore. Providing all these extra's and facilities ( which most camps don't offer ) at the same price as places "back up the road", plus having the best left handed reef break in the area at your door step we believe is great bang for your buck. A big thanks for staying with us and your always welcome to drop in and watch the footy or play pool or just enjoy a cold beer with us. KEG

Awesome Place under coconut trees in front of Ujung Bocor - a great left. 3 Meals a day are part of the package deal. The food was the worst we ate in 20 Years of Indonesian surf travels. Unhealthy mix of failed western cuisine and cheap instand indofoot meals. It's a shame. And don't get me wrong - we wouldn't have any problem at all with basic but fresh local food choices. It's just a total fail of a kitchen. The kitchen lady's are awesome I guess it's more of a management issue. Sorry. Breakfast was ok, i guess it's hard to mess up scrambled eggs.

Thanks for your review. This is the first time we have received a review from a guest dissatisfied with the meals we provide. Our kitchen ladies have been with us since day 1 and take great pride in serving our guests a variety of freshly prepared meals each day. Our menu consists of mainly local indonesian dishes with produce sourced from the market daily with some western dishes for variety. As we are in a remote location its not always easy to buy the produce needed for some meals and therefore our menu needs to be flexible because of this. I apologise if you found our food unpalatable. Our guests have always complemented our kitchen ladies with the meals they serve them. Guest satisfaction is our number 1 priority and I will look into why you where unhappy with the meals that you and our other guests were served during your stay with us. Michael Maxwell Owner

Spent a week here with a few friends in June.
The resort is located in a great location, right next to the rain forrest - you literally walk about 50m from your bungalow to check out the surf!
The wave out the front (ujong bocur) is incredible, and there are plenty of other waves in the area. We hired scooters/drivers very cheaply to take us to plenty of other spots if we wanted to try a different wave, or find something to ourselves.
Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Food was a mixture of local and western depending on what we felt like. All was very tasty.
Definitely plan on getting here again!

I was there end of Feb 2015. That's simply the best place I have been in Indonesia so far.
The wave is just there..., the accomodation was as good as the surf.
But the staff was just helpful, smily, funny, and a lot of more. Thanks to Bobby and all the others for their sense of hospitality. Great food was there too.
I will do my best to come back to the "Jungle". It was easy, realax and funny.

+1
Great staff, great facility. I booked for ten days and loved the resort and location so much I extended my trip for a month.
Easily the best Losman on the point, and while it does have one negative which is only a not perfect view of the wave that means a 100m walk down the beach to get the best perspective, this is minor. And more than made up for by having very comfortable cool and airy rooms with proper spring mattress and toilets.(most of the other Losmans have squat dunnies and a foam mattress on the floor).
However easily the best feature was the food which was plentiful and healthy. Another point was the fact that not one guest got sick in the whole month I was here (not the case in many others where half the guests got sick more than once in more than one).
The wave out the front Ujung Bacor (or simply the point ) was sensational with pumping 3-8 for waves the whole time I durin my stay.
I can't thank Ramion, Mely, Asahn, Peitre, Mata, Benny, Elian enough for the way they looked after me and I will be back one day for sure.

Hey Mate Absolutely stoked you had a great time and the surf gods came through with some awesome waves. We have a great crew led by our manager Remon working with us and your kind words means a lot to our crew. Glad you liked our bungalows and the comfy beds. We have had a couple of negative comments about our food recently which we put down to them never experiencing Indo before. So it's awesome to hear from a guest that the meals were varied, plentiful and healthy. Thanks heaps for the review and we hope to see you back soon. Michael Maxwell Owner.

If that was my first trip to Indo, i would never come again. Actually the whole place (Krui) was not good, but the camp was absolutely awful.
I know its cheap (we had 35 usd per night as a group) but cheep doesn’t always means poor!
Rooms.
Bed and wardrobe. No hanger, no chairs. One light, you can’t find anything in the evening, you can’t read. There were terrible smells in the wardrobe, so all our clothes were quite stinky. We had daily cleaning but really inaccurately. You can’t adjust water in bathroom properly, it is or cold or extremely hot.
Food.
Horrible.
First two days it was ok. Spicy chicken and veggies were quite nice. But then we had chicken and rice twice a day for one month…. Ok, there was some fish, but i can hardly remember it. Maybe twice during this period. Some times they tried to prepare some european stuff. Pizza? Burger? Pasta? They’d better stop doing it. Better to eat rice for a year, but not this «Burger». For a breakfast you can have or eggs (super salty and super onion) or pancake. Some fruits but no porridge. Quite often we had to go to Lani’s for a dinner cause we had enough. Ask for a free Bintang, its included in rooms.
Stuff.
The camp is runed by indonesians (don’t know were are its owners) who don’t care about anything. We had to ask about scooters for 3 days, until our friend lived and we took his bike. Always so tricky, trying to get money out of nothing! Dont use Hamsa as a guide for anything. He doesn’t know anything about surfing and not responsible at all. It will kill you. Once we went to a waterfall and there was no way back but through the jungles. So he said we have to pay a farmer, who will show us a pas… Despite if we already payed for parking, visiting waterfall («government fee») and so on. Anyway… This guy from a camp said he is not going with us, cause he is afraid of the jungle… So he’s plan was to leave us to this farmer to pass jungles! Sounds like a horror film scene.
Pool table in the camp broken and dirty. Tennis table broken. Under the tower on the coast were u’d like to have a rest u’ll find a heap of trash.
Surf.
If you are an average surfer, u’ll have to drive 30 mins to Krui. When its big, its crowded! Other waves are for pros or kamikaze, especially the one in front of the camp.
Bike rent 65000 rup per day
Room for 1 pers 35 usd per day
Car rent 100000 rup per pers per day
If you need any trips, ding repair, or just any advises there, try to find Bobby Banana at the Krui beach.
I'd give Sumatra Surf Resort 1 out of 5 if it was not that cheap.

Hi Pippo, Thank you for taking the time to write a review on our surf camp. Firstly, it's disappointing that you say you do not know who owns the camp. I personally exchanged some 15 emails with Adrian and Filip from their initial enquiries right up until the final booking and arrival. The other guests in your group were very happy with the rooms and variety of food offered and thoroughly enjoyed their stay with us. Adrian confirmed this when I spoke to him on the phone to resolve the dispute you had with the scooter hire company prior to your departure. In regard to the Waterfall excursion due to the torrential rain it was dangerous to take you to the top and Hamsa advised you against this. Upon your return to camp our manager refunded you 500,000 rupiah because you were unable to go the top of the waterfall. Guest safety is of paramount importance to us and our guide did the right thing. The charges you mention were inclusive in the cost of the excursion and not additional. Scooter hire is not provided by us (as is the case with all camps in our area) we merely put you in contact with the scooter hire company. What they charge is beyond our control. We even paid half of the repair cost for the damage you caused to the scooter ( which we were not obliged to do) and provided medical treatment at no cost to you for your injuries. Our surf guide Hamsa is a qualified and certified instructor who has taught 100's of people to surf in Bali. Surfing conditions are his our control and there are obviously going to be days when the surf is to big for your ability level. There are other spots within 30 minutes which are more "friendly" for beginners and you were taken to them by Hamsa. Finally you mention you had chicken and rice for "one month" that's strange as you were only at our camp for 14 days. Our cooks work on a 10 day menu which has a large variety of meals. I apologise if the food wasn't acceptable to your palate. However as that was your first time in Indonesia then that would be understandable. Myself and my crew did everything possible to make your stay enjoyable. You were given a 20% discount for your booking. We refunded money for your excursion. We paid 50% of the damage bill for the scooter that you damaged. Provided you with medical care and treatment at our expense. And as for asking for a free beer you were given 2 complimentary cartons of Bintang during your stay. We have had over 500 guests stay with us since opening 3 years ago and are proud of the reputation and following we have built. We have a great crew who go out of their way to make guest stays awesome and I have complete confidence in them to continue that. Once again thank you for your review and I will take on board your issues. Michael Maxwell Owner.
