We wrote a review two years ago and the same applies. This place is 15/10. All staff are friendly and helpful. There was plenty of food and always good. A real shout out to those girls in the kitchen. Ramon and Alexis were fantastic hosts and really looked after our group of 7 as did Rio. It was great for the non surfer mums to have the pool this time round. Our surf guide Mus was always ready to help out and take us on adventures. This is a lovely quiet surf camp. Yes it is a 4-5 hour drive from the airport but once you’re there it is all worth it. Really well placed for surfing. A big thank you again to everyone who works at the camp. We will be back.

Hi Kristy, Firstly, a massive thanks for staying with us again it was a pleasure to look after your group. We are so lucky to have such great staff, many of them have been with us since day 1. Our kitchen ladies are fantastic and take great pride in providing our guests nutritious and delicious meals. Any surf camp is only as good as the staff that run it and we are very lucky to have such a great crew. Stoked that you loved the new pool, it's a great setting and perfect for relaxing in. I will pass on your compliments to our staff who will be thrilled that you had a great time. Look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Michael Maxwell

Awesome Place under coconut trees in front of Ujung Bocor - a great left. 3 Meals a day are part of the package deal. The food was the worst we ate in 20 Years of Indonesian surf travels. Unhealthy mix of failed western cuisine and cheap instand indofoot meals. It's a shame. And don't get me wrong - we wouldn't have any problem at all with basic but fresh local food choices. It's just a total fail of a kitchen. The kitchen lady's are awesome I guess it's more of a management issue. Sorry. Breakfast was ok, i guess it's hard to mess up scrambled eggs.

Thanks for your review. This is the first time we have received a review from a guest dissatisfied with the meals we provide. Our kitchen ladies have been with us since day 1 and take great pride in serving our guests a variety of freshly prepared meals each day. Our menu consists of mainly local indonesian dishes with produce sourced from the market daily with some western dishes for variety. As we are in a remote location its not always easy to buy the produce needed for some meals and therefore our menu needs to be flexible because of this. I apologise if you found our food unpalatable. Our guests have always complemented our kitchen ladies with the meals they serve them. Guest satisfaction is our number 1 priority and I will look into why you where unhappy with the meals that you and our other guests were served during your stay with us. Michael Maxwell Owner

I (single traveller) stayed at Sumatra Surf Resort in November 2018. I can highly recommend the Surf Resort not only because of the amazing Resort, but also because of Krui and its beautiful surroundings, the very warm staff and the delicious food. I surfed a lot and enjoyed the time at the Resort (nice chill-out area, great pool at the beach) and in Krui. Go there, catch waves and enjoy beautiful Sumatra!

Ok, I traveled there with Scott G. from Hawaii. I can't do better than his review. It's been a year since I have since our trip and still raving about the wave out front. We enjoyed a high level of hospitality from every one there. Raymon, Mel, Hasam, Hamsa (good ping pong matches my friend, hope your still there} if i didn't name anybody else please forgive, you all were great ,clean clothes and rooms were very nice, hot water ooooh yea, the drivers that took us to and from the airprort (my grip strength improved), The cooking was great and they made my omelet to order every morning after surf(onion tomato no cheese) the even let me in there kitchen. but they could only improve on the pizza sauce. the local Sumatran dishes they made were a real treat. fried mushrooms wow, All I can think about is how to get back there. Now for the waves. Ujung bocur was simply incredible long fast perfectly peeling walls that started off top to bottom and then would pick up speed and almost double in size by the time you got the end of the wave. It's has more punch than it looks. Way Jambu .Heavy barreling the whole way, don't surf there at low tide. One guy tried and had to come to our camp for first aid, he looked like a tiger got him on his whole back, He was out of the water for a week. . Krui left was like ok. Jimmys left and right was worth the trip and paying for the drive package. I can't say enough good things about Nana, ;He is not part of the camp but he was a big part of the experience. He was on the point taking photos every day and we even hired him to go with us to the other surf spot in the area, He's good and that's how he makes hes living and he lives just down the street. Bring a sd card or something to make it easy to get your photos. Over all I highly recommend the Sumatra surf camp. we were there June 2017…

After moving for another surf accomodation in the same area Sumatran Surf Resort was by far a stand out. Excellent value for money, location, staff were amazing too. They have kept the coconut trees and keep them maintained to provide beautiful surroundings and plenty of shade. Great pool with ocean view along with a viewing tower.

Hi Everyone We were a group of 6 surfers of varying abilities staying at SSR for 8 nights. The whole experience was A grade. Booking and corresponding with Michael was very easy and informative ensuring we knew exactly what to expect (In fact all our expectations were exceeded as the resort itself was so clean and spacious, great pool, great food, very friendly staff). Andre our surf guide was exceptional and was always on the money with predicting surf locations. He really went above and beyond to ensure our surf experience was the best. His friendship was warm and genuine. Our rooms were cleaned everyday and were very comfortable There was always a quality wave out front which we frequented, but we loved riding our scooters to other breaks often scoring with no one else out. South Sumatra is a very special place and SSR captures the great laid back vibe of this area. Would love to come back and would recommend to anyone. Thanks…

Losman is the Indonesian word for camp. This quiet strip has a dozen losmans/camps with half as many being the main ones. September was kinda chill with only a handful of guests at ours. Lots of coconut trees and shade and grassy Area with nice wooden bungalows. The rental board was deluxe. A nice new mayhem lost. Mel was the best English speaker and a great go to person. Lots of smiles all around from the cooks, guides, security, and managers. Just a nice easy helpful vibe. Your just at the high point top of the main peak which requires a little peeking out and around the corner to view the action. I recommend they trim back some trees obscuring the view slightly. 3 min walk from bungalow to reef walk out to ujung bocor wave. Such a quality wave. Even when the swell forecast is nothing, there still is something. Moped rental affordable and allows a trip to town and other waves. We will definitely remember the river float half day excursion. Very nice. 8 full days was just right for me being able to see the swells come and go and come again surfing is easy when they feed you soooo well. Surf 2-3x day eat like a king and rest. Repeat. Get a 10$ massage while your at it. Thanks everyone.…

Aloha Jaimie, Thanks for your kind words about our camp. Yep we need to trim a few trees to improve the view. That's on the "To Do List" after we build our new pool and deck area. Stoked you enjoyed our place and caught a lot of quality waves. We reckon our cooks are just about the best on the strip so really happy you enjoyed the food. Did you get a chance to pop up to Lani's and meet Deano? He's from your beautiful part of the world. Mahalo Michael.

It is with great pleasure that I send this note. My friends and I just returned from a 19 night stay in South Sumatra. I am writing this as a seasoned surf traveller. My review is based on comparable 40+ years of experience in surf camps, including Costa Rica, Fiji, New Zealand, Spain, France, Mexico, Canada and Bali. To be clear, comparing this “surf resort” to the Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton would be a mistake. Specifically, South Sumatra is not a high end, limitless budget destination. It is a rural, no frills sliver of magic on the edge of the jungle. First off, the facilities are top notch for a surf camp. Our bungalows were kept clean and well-maintained for the duration of our visit. I had no unexpected hangups that might come with an oceanfront stay. The young women whose job it was to clean up our rooms were professional and courteous. Their smiles were infectious, even as they folded my laundry. The guys were always polite, always helpful and a joy to hang out with. We were blessed with a great crew. Second, the business side of the operation was exceptional. Mel and Raymond were always sure to meet our needs. Mel was a daily ray of sunshine, eclipsed only by the unreal surf we had the entire time. She is the type of employee who should never be let go. In my decades of travel I don’t know that I have ever been so enamored with the personality of the ‘front desk.’ This includes Raymond. He is a true ambassador for the operation. From our 3am arrival to our 3am departure 20 days later, he was awesome. He exudes confidence and surety in every aspect of the job. At no point did I feel I could not ask for his help, advice and perspective. We felt completely secure in knowing that Raymond and his team were there for us. Paired with Mel, I hope the resort does what it takes to keep them in the fold. They are irreplaceable. If I return to the resort and they are not a part of it, I will feel at a loss. Finally, the food. I can’t say enough about the kitchen. A serious concern of mine when traveling is the food. Due to my ongoing battle with leukemia I am aways leery of my diet. Not once did I experience an upset stomach or queasiness. I consistently experience such things even when I prepare my own meals at home. Aside from that, the food was 5-star. Every dish had exceptional flavor and flair. As I personally told the women in the kitchen, I can tell they cook with love in their hearts because I can taste it in the food they serve. In closing, without sounding hyperbolic, what they have in South Sumatra is special. I hope they do what it takes to maintain the positive vibe my friends and I have been expressing to everyone since our return to Hawaii.…

Firstly I am the non surfing wife and I was stoked in the place. Facilities fantastic. From the minute we arrived we were welcomed, Raymond made me coffee and got a Bintang for my husband. There was a great crew of surfers in the resort also. We were allocated a surf guide And a BIG thank you to Hazma, you were awesome. Our room was fantastic, bed comfy, hot water(just had to have it). Enough storage, lets face it when travelling in Indo you just don't need much. Bathroom always spotless, thank you to Rica, Nita and Enol. A tip: we had rain so used mozzie coils of a night in the room in case mozzie nets failed. To the kitchen staff, Tenti,Odang and Fitri, you guys rock. The food was awesome, geared at hungry surfers but plenty of fruit always for those girls that maybe don't need the carb hit. Assortments of fish, chicken, shrimp, beef, tofu and Tempe. I cannot understand anyone that cannot find something there. They do burgers sometimes and I believe pizza but hey your in Indo.........enjoy the cuisine. As for previous comments. Treat those girls with respect and appreciation and they will certainly treat you well. The break: The outlook speaks for itself. There are plenty of waves nearby also and that's what the delightful surf guides are for. Just ask. First aid, well we didn't need it but there were those that did and they have a very good first aid kit and Alexix does a great job there. Finally Meli and Raymond you made our stay one of the best experiences, you guys run a fine establishment. If in Sumatra, Krui area this is a must stay and we will return. To everyone else that I have not personally mentioned in the staff area, you do an unbelievable and very capable job looking after your guests. Thank you…
