Detailed Reviews
We were very pleased with the room, views, pool and hot tubs, linens, breakfast buffet, and the food available in the lobby area. We enjoyed hiking the trails on the property. Because the hourly shuttle to town was often full, we had the front desk call taxis for us on several occasions. Taxis are relatively inexpensive but can take 20-40 minutes to arrive at the hotel.
While beautiful and immaculate, Arakur is not on par with other "Leading Hotels of the World." The "spa" is just a gorgeous indoor-outdoor pool and hot tubs with a locker room. We had massages that were quite good but the (only two) massage rooms are located just behind the check-in desk, so you can hear the phone ring as well as conversations between staff and anyone who approached the desk. And while the staff was pleasant and helpful, especially the young men staffing the luggage storage and those working in food service, they are clearly not as professional or well trained as those who work in comparable hotels.
Others noted thin walls in reviews, but we found that the noise came from the hallway.

I stayed at the Arakur while waiting for my boat to leave for Antarctica. The hotel is beautiful and takes full advantage of its stunning setting. The hotel itself is stone, wood, leather, glass and wood - a combination that felt very of its location and warm, but with clean modern lines that really frame the view of the Beagle Channel and the mountains that is what you really come for. The spa is lovely with cozy outdoor hot tubs perfect for taking in the view. The rooms were large and comfortable, the staff was helpful, the amenities were sleek and modern. I saw some complaints about slow wifi when reading reviews before I went, but the WiFi was great while I was there. It was the perfect place to decompress after a long series of flights and enjoy the beauty of Tierra del Fuego. My only "complaint" was that the shuttle to and from town was occasionally at capacity and guests would have to take taxis instead. It's not an expensive taxi ride and taxis got up to the hotel pretty quickly, but during peak periods they could run the shuttle more frequently.

The pictures don't do the Arakur justice. Situated on a mountain above Ushuaia, this hotel could easily star in a James Bond movie. The views are absolutely amazing, the the build quality is top notch, and the layout of the property is lovely. This is where the contradictions start- the build quality, including the wood in the rooms is top notch, but the walls are paper thin and you will need earplugs in most cases to sleep! Why build just a magnificent property and have paper thing walls? In a similar fashion, they spent a lot of money building the hotel, but didn't pave the road to it.
We were in Ushuaia in a relative heat wave- they were breaking daily temperature records. Of course, the AC did not work in the hotel. So, you had to open the windows, but with the wind, very hard to sleep unless you have good earplugs! Did I say, bring some good earplugs. As a note about the AC, lower floor rooms were much cooler than the higher floor rooms if the heat will be an issue.
The service at the hotel did not fit the property at all. We called about the AC and they said they could fix it. Nothing would happen. Then, you go down the front desk and they tell you the AC cannot be turned on at all.
Another contradiction- the food at the Arakur has the be some of the best we have ever had at a hotel. Really good food. The service, especially at breakfast was some of the worst service we have ever had at a hotel. It was difficult to get coffee or orange juice as no one would serve you! Then, when you went to try to get coffee yourself they would get mad at you.
Part of me wants to give the Arakur 3 stars because the service was just that bad. Yet, the scenery, food, and hotel layout make this a hard place not to like. If they got better management, this could be high up on a number of lists.

We stayed here prior to our expedition cruise to Antarctica for 1 night after 2 nights at another hotel in town – this Arakur hotel was arranged by our expedition tour operators, the hotel itself is lovely, it reminded me of a resort I used to work at in Wyoming up a butte overlooking the valley and mountains. Similar floor to ceiling windows, stone walls, infinity pool, with calm and quiet atmosphere. The breakfast which was included was delicious, with a good variety of options available ranging from hot dishes like eggs, french toast, sausage to pastries, fruit, yogurt, cheese, cold cuts, cereal, juice etc. The rooms were lovely, spacious and clean, with beautiful mountain views. The hotel is a 17-20 minute drive from town, partially up a dirt road so it’s not really a convenient location for walking, best to rent a car if you were to stay here a few days.
Cons:
I had a burger at their lobby lounge/bar and it was quite awful, very dry and tough meat, dry bread, the lettuce was wilted and tomatoes watery. I was so hungry and getting over a cold that I didn’t bother complaining, I just wanted to eat and then go to sleep as I wasn’t feeling well.
In the room I pushed the button for laundry pick up and called housekeeping to also let them know, since I needed clean clothes asap. We had been traveling for 8 days prior and about to hop on a ship for 10 days, so I wanted to make sure I had enough clean clothes. 2 hours later still no laundry pick up, so I called housekeeping again. When they hadn’t picked it up yet again after I went and got something to eat, I called front desk to tell them how long it’d been. They finally picked it up and I got my laundry back a few hours later, but there were a couple of pieces missing and someone else’s clothes got mixed in with mine. This was a whole other ordeal, they found one of my items, but not the other. They refunded me the cost of the shirt, but it wasn’t about the cost, it was just the entire experience from start to finish, was just so disorganized and a big pain to deal with, especially for the prices they were charging for laundry.
There’s no smoking allowed in the lobby which is good, but the smokers would just stand right in front of the main door and smoke, and with the constant wind, it would blow the smoke right back into the lobby. Perhaps have a separate enclosed smokers area or tell people to smoke away from the front door. It's a bit trashy for a hotel of this caliber to have its lobby reeking of smoke.

This hotel is well constructed, modern, with a modern ski lodge/eco aesthetic, state of the art electronics in the rooms (though no air conditioning, only confusing control panel that doesn’t work well). On our two stays here before and after a cruise to Patagonia, it became clear that this very expensive hotel caters to high end tour groups going on group Antarctica cruises, and this is reflected in the service mentality. Lavish buffets, very limited restaurant choices outside breakfast and dinner buffet. Poor room service. Very poor/indifferent service at the reception. We were met with resistance when trying to get help to call a taxi to go to the town, pushed instead to use the hourly shuttle. We were also offered no help or guidance in trying to mail a package back home by international courier, which is a basic function any five star hotel should offer, much less “Leading Hotels of the World.” Even worse, the front desk manager claimed there was a DHL in town and handed us an address and map and told us to ride the shuttle into town to take care of sending our package home. We wasted about three hours in this effort, as there was no such DHL facility.
Though the hotel claims to have a gift shop where one would expect to be able to buy the normal sundries one might need or have forgotten at home, it was never open in the three days we stayed there. We had to ride into town to buy so much as a toiletry item. Though full, the hotel was lightly staffed and we had to make several calls to get assistance with non-working fixtures, room service, and other routine hotel guest requests.
The 10 am checkout time is bizarre, inconvenient, and totally inflexible.
The spa facilities are very limited. Hard to schedule a message during our three days there. I managed to get one, and it was good. No beauty facility to wash/blow-dry or style hair.
We stayed here because of the Leading Hotels designation, but for the price, this was a very overrated and under-delivering hotel, truly disappointing way to start and end our Patagonia vacation.

This is an ultramodern property located in a commanding position overlooking the city of Ushuaia with great views of the city, the Beagle Channel and snow-capped peaks in the distance. Reception was efficient and friendly. The room is well appointed with automatic window shades and many other gadgets. Everything works. The restaurant is outstanding with good food on a buffet and a wonderful grill serving many cuts of meat directly off the wood-fired grill. The servers in the dining room seem a little bit untrained and could be a little more attentive. There is a free shuttle service to the town about 2 miles away.

This hotel you see edged on the mountains behind Ushuaia it looks like Menace on the mountain!
Long road up and gravel but when you arrive it’s very modern and funky. Heaps of glass , wood and polished concrete. The spa is amazing with views over the Beagle Channel.
Rooms are spacious and shower and bath separate.
We stayed here pre going to Antarctica.
The food was excellent especially the crab starter! Portions are huge so easy to share. Staff are very attentive and the value for money on wine and food excellent.
We both had a massage in the spa which was very good.

This hotel is situated 15 minutes out of town up an unpaved road at the top of a mountain. The views from here are spectacular. The hotel itself is sleek and modern looking. A lot of open space.
The reception staff was friendly and efficient. The room was generous in size and nicely done Clean just the way I like it.
The restaurant bar had comfy furniture and huge windows giving amazing views to the water and mountains. The food here was superb as well. They even had a fantastic piano player during dinner.
This could be a 5 star if....
1. Had a concierge desk or at least brochures of what the town provides.
2. More buses during high season as they only run on the hour and 8 of us couldn’t fit. So our only option was to hire a taxi that would take another 15 minutes to get there.
3. Have a boutique and amenities store. we are a captive audience since there is nothing close by.

Upon first glance, the property feels a bit cold/sterile. However, we quickly learned this is not the case at all. We have traveled all over the world and this was the most memorable experience by far. The staff is friendly and accommodating - very eager to help. The hotel offers anything one would need. There is a game room for kids, an extensive spa, a heated indoor and outdoor pool with the most impressive views of the surrounding landscape and town. There is a shuttle service that takes guests to and from town which we used. It was great. We also opted to to take a taxi on an occasion when we didn't feel like waiting - the prices were reasonable. My family and I would return in a heartbeat to Ushuaia and Arakur is a contributing factor.

Stayed here for a couple of nights and were very disappointed with the service. It is most definitely NOT 5 star, and certainly not up to the standards of the Leading Hotels of the World group, of which it is a member. On the positive side: the view is spectacular, down to Ushuaia and the Beagle Channel. On the negative side: the location is a handicap, as it is a 20 minute or so bus ride into town where all the shops and restaurants are and a 20 minute ride back (not including any waiting time). Also, the service was quite poor - on both the restaurant and the bar. Very slow, which seemed to be mostly the fault of the kitchen itself, as the wait staff seemed to be trying, and were quite apologetic about the long waits. The food itself was quite average. Worst of all was the poor upkeep of the exterior of the hotel. The hotel main entrance was not attractive and inviting. Throughout our stay, there was a large piece of plastic packaging laying on the drive, which was not removed until, just before we departed, we notified the staff. There was a bucket outside the door which was full of water and cigarette butts - no one made any attempt to clean it and it looked disgusting. The entrance drive (right outside the door) was full of potholes, which someone should be tasked with fixing.
Very disappointing. Would recommend staying in town as an alternative.

Dear guest,
Thank you for contacting us.
It is a special tune composed for Arakur exclusively.
Kind regards
Ushuaia is a great little town with lots of shops and restaurants and everything you need. September is "shoulder" season and is still going to be cold and not many tourists around. Expect temps not much above freezing, but probably not below freezing
The shuttle drops you very close to the pier. 3 minutes walk
On top of the other comments I would like to add another tip.
If you are going to take an Australis cruise, you can drop off your luggage in the morning at their office in town. This way you don't have to worry about carrying your luggage and you will find them in your cabin in the evening.
Enjoy your trip!
